The African rock python is sub-Saharan Africa's largest snake and one of the continent's most consequential terrestrial predators, capable of regulating populations of rodents, antelope, and other prey across savannas, forests, and wetland margins. As a non-venomous constrictor that can exceed five metres in length, it occupies an ecological role analogous to that of large cats in some landscapes, yet it remains poorly studied compared with charismatic mammals. Decades of commercial harvest for skins, bushmeat, and the live-animal trade—combined with widespread persecution born of fear—have driven steep regional declines, particularly across West Africa [Alexander et al. 2021]. Its conservation story is therefore one of a wide-ranging, adaptable species whose abundance masks localized collapses, and whose future depends on regulating trade and reducing needless killing.
Biology and Identification
Python sebae is a large, heavy-bodied constrictor. Adults commonly measure 3 to 3.5 metres, and reliably documented individuals have exceeded 5 metres, making it the largest snake in Africa [Alexander et al. 2021]. The body is marked with an irregular series of brown, olive, and tan blotches edged in darker pigment, providing effective camouflage against leaf litter, soil, and dry grass. A distinctive dark, arrow-shaped marking on the head, bordered by lighter stripes, helps separate it from other African pythons.
The species is non-venomous and dispatches prey by constriction, seizing an animal with its recurved teeth before coiling around it and tightening with each exhalation until circulatory arrest occurs. Its diet is broad and shifts with body size: smaller individuals take rodents, birds, and lizards, while large adults are capable of consuming antelope, monkeys, monitor lizards, and other sizeable vertebrates [Branch 1998]. Heat-sensitive labial pits allow pythons to detect the thermal signatures of warm-blooded prey, an adaptation shared across the python lineage.
Reproduction is oviparous. Females may deposit large clutches—often several dozen eggs—and, unusually among snakes, remain coiled around the eggs throughout incubation, shivering to generate metabolic heat and defending the clutch from predators [Branch 1998]. This extended maternal investment is energetically costly and means breeding females may not reproduce every year. Hatchlings emerge fully independent in feeding but vulnerable to a wide range of predators.
Taxonomically, the African rock python has historically been treated as having two forms: the northern Python sebae sebae and the southern Python natalensis, the latter now widely recognized as a distinct species by many authorities [Alexander et al. 2021]. The IUCN assessment of Python sebae therefore refers to the northern lineage, distributed broadly across western, central, and northeastern Africa.
Habitat and Range
The African rock python occupies an exceptionally broad range across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and the Gambia in the west, eastward through the Sahel and Guinea forests to Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya, and southward into parts of central Africa [Alexander et al. 2021]. It is a habitat generalist, occurring in moist and dry savanna, forest edges, grasslands, semi-arid scrub, and rocky outcrops, and it shows a strong association with permanent water—rivers, swamps, and wetland margins—where it hunts and thermoregulates [Branch 1998].
This adaptability allows the species to persist in human-modified landscapes, including agricultural mosaics and the margins of settlements, where rodent prey is abundant. That proximity, however, brings the snake into frequent conflict with people. The species is also notable as an introduced animal: individuals of African rock python have been recorded in the Florida Everglades, raising concern about the potential for an invasive population in a non-native ecosystem [USGS 2021].

Conservation Status
The African rock python is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2021 with a decreasing population trend [Alexander et al. 2021]. The species is also listed on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international commercial trade to ensure that exports are sustainable and legally sourced [CITES 2023]. While the species remains widespread and locally common in parts of its range, the assessment documents severe regional declines—particularly in West Africa—driven by intensive harvesting for skins and meat, such that it approaches the thresholds for a threatened category under the standardized IUCN criteria [IUCN 2012]. No global population estimate exists, but the combination of a broad distribution and pronounced localized depletion underlies its Near Threatened classification.
Threats
Overexploitation for skins and meat. The single most significant pressure on the species is commercial harvest. African rock pythons are killed in large numbers for their skins, used in the international leather trade, and for bushmeat, with the largest individuals—the most reproductively valuable—preferentially targeted [Alexander et al. 2021]. West African populations have experienced the steepest declines, where unsustainable offtake has substantially reduced abundance.
Live capture for the exotic pet trade. The species enters international trade as live animals, both wild-caught and captive-bred. Although CITES Appendix II listing requires permits and non-detriment findings, monitoring and enforcement vary by country, and wild collection can add to harvest pressure on local populations [CITES 2023].
Persecution and human–wildlife conflict. As a very large snake that occasionally takes poultry and small livestock, the African rock python is widely feared and frequently killed on sight near settlements [Branch 1998]. This indiscriminate killing removes individuals from populations already under harvest pressure and is difficult to quantify or regulate.
Habitat conversion. Agricultural expansion, wetland drainage, and the degradation of riparian habitats reduce the availability of the permanent-water environments on which the species depends, and fragment the landscapes through which it moves [Alexander et al. 2021].
What Is Being Done
The species' listing on CITES Appendix II provides the principal international mechanism for managing trade. Under this framework, exporting countries are required to issue permits and make non-detriment findings demonstrating that exports do not harm wild populations, and the CITES Secretariat and Animals Committee periodically review trade in heavily traded reptiles [CITES 2023]. These measures aim to bring the skin and live-animal trade onto a sustainable footing rather than to halt it outright.
National wildlife legislation across many range states affords the African rock python legal protection or regulated-harvest status, and the species occurs within numerous protected areas spanning savanna and forest biomes, where harvest is prohibited and habitat is conserved. Such reserves provide refugia that can buffer the species against the harvest pressure prevalent in unprotected landscapes [Alexander et al. 2021].
The IUCN Species Survival Commission, through its specialist networks, compiles and periodically reassesses the data underlying the Red List status, applying standardized categories and criteria to identify the regions and trade pathways of greatest concern and to guide conservation priorities [IUCN 2012]. In countries where the snake is introduced, agencies such as the U.S. Geological Survey monitor for and study non-native python occurrences to assess and mitigate invasion risk [USGS 2021].
Beyond formal regulation, conservation organizations and herpetologists work with rural communities to reduce needless killing—promoting safe removal and relocation of pythons found near homes and dispelling misconceptions about the species—an approach that addresses persecution at its source.
How Readers Can Help
Contribute to citizen science. Reptiles are chronically under-recorded. Submitting photographs and locality observations of African rock pythons to platforms such as iNaturalist helps researchers map distribution and detect local declines, and reporting sightings of introduced pythons assists agencies tracking invasive populations.
Support trade regulation and enforcement. Engaging with and supporting the work of bodies that implement CITES, and backing well-resourced wildlife-enforcement programs in range states, strengthens the oversight that keeps the skin, meat, and pet trades sustainable [CITES 2023].
Make informed consumer choices. Avoiding products made from wild snake leather, and refusing to purchase wild-caught reptiles as pets, reduces the demand that drives unsustainable harvest. Where reptiles are kept, choosing documented captive-bred animals from reputable sources lowers pressure on wild populations.
Promote education and coexistence. Sharing accurate information about the ecological value of large constrictors—as natural controllers of rodent populations—and supporting community programs that relocate rather than kill snakes near homes helps reduce the persecution that compounds other threats [Branch 1998].
