The African Spurred Tortoise is the largest mainland tortoise in Africa and the third-largest tortoise species on Earth, a slow-growing reptile engineered for survival along the searing southern margin of the Sahara. As a burrowing herbivore of the Sahel, it shapes its arid environment by excavating deep refuges that buffer extreme temperatures and shelter a range of other animals, while dispersing the seeds of the grasses and succulents it consumes. Once widespread across a broad band of sub-Saharan savanna, the species has declined sharply in the wild even as it has become one of the most commonly bred tortoises in the global pet trade [Petrozzi et al. 2018]. Its story is one of stark contrast: an animal abundant in captivity yet increasingly scarce in its native range, where habitat degradation, climate change, and harvesting continue to erode wild populations [Petrozzi et al. 2020].


Biology and Identification

The African Spurred Tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) is a massive, robustly built terrestrial tortoise. Adult males commonly reach a straight carapace length of around 86 cm and an average mass near 81 kg, with exceptional individuals exceeding 100 kg and rare records surpassing 120 kg, making it the largest tortoise on the African mainland and the third-largest tortoise in the world after the Galápagos and Aldabra giant tortoises [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. The carapace is broad, low-domed, and tan to yellowish-brown, with prominent growth rings on each scute. The species takes its common and scientific names ("sulcata" from the Latin for "furrowed") from the deep grooves between these scutes and from the two to three pairs of conical bony spurs on the rear surfaces of the thighs.

The limbs are stout and heavily armored with overlapping scales, an adaptation suited to digging and to traversing hard, abrasive substrates. Strong, spade-like forelimbs allow the tortoise to excavate extensive burrows, a defining behavior of the species. These burrows can extend several meters into the ground and provide critical refuge from the daytime heat and the cold nights of the Sahel, allowing the animal to avoid temperature extremes that would otherwise be lethal [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

Centrochelys sulcata is a long-lived, slow-maturing herbivore. In the wild it grazes primarily on grasses, succulents, and other low vegetation, and it is well adapted to extract moisture from its food and to withstand prolonged dry periods. Like many large tortoises, it has a low reproductive rate relative to its body size, with females producing clutches of eggs that are buried in excavated nests; the combination of delayed maturity and slow population turnover makes the species particularly sensitive to the loss of adults from a population [Petrozzi et al. 2018].

Its physiology and behavior are tightly tuned to a highly seasonal, water-limited environment. During the hottest and driest months the tortoise spends extended periods inactive within its burrow, becoming active around the rains when forage is most available. This boom-and-bust activity pattern, governed by the timing and intensity of seasonal rainfall, leaves the species exposed to the increasing climatic variability of the Sahel region [Petrozzi et al. 2020].


Habitat and Range

The African Spurred Tortoise occupies a broad swath of arid and semi-arid habitat along the southern edge of the Sahara, principally in the Sahel and adjacent Sudanian savanna. Its historical range spans a band of West, Central, and North-East African countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sudan, with additional records from the Arabian Peninsula in Saudi Arabia and Yemen [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Within this band the species favors open grassland, thornscrub, and sandy or gravelly plains where it can dig and forage.

Burrowing is central to its use of habitat. By creating deep, humid microrefuges, the tortoise mitigates the extreme surface conditions of the Sahel, and these burrows are also used by other vertebrate and invertebrate species, giving C. sulcata a role as an ecosystem engineer in an otherwise harsh landscape [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Habitat selection studies in the West African savanna have documented how this large tortoise partitions space and activity across the landscape, including its relationships with smaller co-occurring tortoise species, with distribution most strongly associated with sandy, vegetated areas at a distance from human settlements and roads [Petrozzi et al. 2020b].

Across much of its range the species now persists in fragmented, low-density populations rather than the more continuous distribution suspected historically. Surveys in the West African Sahel indicate that suitable habitat has been progressively reduced and broken up, and that local populations have been depleted in many areas where the tortoise was formerly more common [Petrozzi et al. 2018].


Conservation Status

The African Spurred Tortoise is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List [IUCN 2021]. The most recent global assessment, published in 2021, reflects a substantial revision from the species' earlier 1996 listing of Vulnerable, recognizing a rapidly declining population driven by habitat loss, exploitation, and climate change [IUCN 2021; Petrozzi et al. 2020]. The species is also listed on CITES Appendix II (as part of the family Testudinidae), which regulates international commercial trade and requires export permits [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

The overall population trend is assessed as decreasing, with wild numbers declining rapidly across much of the range. Although C. sulcata is extraordinarily common in captivity worldwide—CITES records document more than 393,000 live individuals in international trade between 1990 and 2019—the vast majority of these are captive-bred, and this abundance in the pet trade masks the depletion of genuinely wild populations [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Analyses of threats attribute roughly 60% of the pressure on the species to habitat fragmentation and loss, about 25% to climate change, around 10% to exploitation for local egg and meat consumption, and about 5% to exploitation for the trade in pets, food, and traditional medicine [Petrozzi et al. 2020].


Threats

Habitat loss and degradation. The single largest pressure on the African Spurred Tortoise is the loss and fragmentation of its Sahelian habitat. Expansion of agriculture and livestock grazing, combined with desertification and land degradation, has reduced and broken up the open savanna the species depends on [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Heavy cattle grazing in particular degrades the vegetation the tortoise relies on for forage and cover, and its impact is intensified when combined with seasonal fires that sweep through dry grasslands [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

Climate change. As an animal of an already water-limited environment, C. sulcata is highly exposed to shifts in the timing and amount of Sahelian rainfall and to rising temperatures. Climate change is estimated to account for roughly a quarter of the overall threat to the species, as increasing aridity and climatic variability reduce forage availability and constrain the windows of activity and reproduction tied to seasonal rains [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Habitat distribution models projecting conditions to 2070 suggest that, while the geographic envelope of climatically suitable habitat may shift, the overall quality of available habitat within the species' range is expected to decline [Luiselli et al. 2022].

Overexploitation. The species is harvested across parts of its range for local consumption of its eggs and meat, and individuals are also collected for the international pet trade and for use in food and traditional medicine [Petrozzi et al. 2018]. Because the tortoise is slow to mature and long-lived, even modest, sustained removal of adults and eggs can drive local populations downward, and the cumulative effect of harvesting compounds the pressures from habitat change [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

Small, fragmented populations. Decades of habitat loss and harvesting have left many wild populations small, scattered, and isolated. Fragmentation reduces connectivity between groups, limits recolonization of depleted areas, and leaves remaining populations more vulnerable to local extirpation from drought, fire, or continued exploitation [Petrozzi et al. 2018].


What Is Being Done

The IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group (TFTSG) and its associated Turtle Conservation Coalition have prioritized C. sulcata within their assessments of the world's most threatened chelonians, producing the detailed 2020 species monograph in the Conservation Biology of Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises series that synthesizes the species' status, range, and threats and underpins its current Endangered listing [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. This body of work provides the scientific foundation for range-state conservation planning.

International trade in the species is regulated through its listing on CITES Appendix II, which requires that exports be accompanied by permits and be found not to be detrimental to wild populations [Petrozzi et al. 2020]. Monitoring of CITES trade records over recent decades has been used to distinguish captive-bred animals from wild-sourced individuals and to track the volume and origin of tortoises entering international commerce, informing enforcement and policy.

Field research in West Africa—including survey and distribution work in Burkina Faso and studies of habitat selection and threats across the Sahel—has improved understanding of where viable wild populations persist and what is driving their decline [Petrozzi et al. 2018; Petrozzi et al. 2020b]. Conservation organizations focused on chelonians, including the Turtle Conservation Fund and partners working through the TFTSG network, have supported tortoise survey and conservation projects in the region. The species' prolific captive breeding worldwide also means that assurance populations exist outside the wild, although captive abundance is not a substitute for securing wild populations and their habitat [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

  • Support citizen science and field monitoring. Contributing verified tortoise observations to reputable biodiversity databases and supporting field surveys helps researchers map where wild populations of C. sulcata still persist and detect further declines.

  • Engage with policy and trade regulation. Supporting the effective implementation of CITES and national wildlife laws in range states, and backing organizations that monitor the legal and illegal tortoise trade, strengthens protections for wild populations [Petrozzi et al. 2020].

  • Make informed consumer choices. Prospective tortoise keepers should obtain animals only from responsible, documented captive-breeding sources and never from wild-collected stock, recognizing that demand met irresponsibly can incentivize the removal of wild tortoises [Petrozzi et al. 2018].

  • Promote education and habitat stewardship. Sharing accurate information about the species' Endangered wild status, and supporting conservation groups working on Sahelian habitat protection and sustainable land use, helps address the habitat loss and degradation that pose the greatest threat to the African Spurred Tortoise [Petrozzi et al. 2020].
