With likely fewer than 200 mature individuals surviving across the deserts of the Horn of Africa, the African wild ass is the world's most threatened wild equid and is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List [Moehlman et al. 2015]. The wild ancestor of all domestic donkeys, this slender, ash-grey desert specialist persists in scattered, low-density groups across some of the most arid and inaccessible terrain on Earth. Its dramatic decline—range contraction estimated at roughly 90% across parts of its former distribution—has been driven primarily by hunting, competition with livestock for scarce water and forage, and hybridization with domestic donkeys [Moehlman et al. 2015; Tesfai et al. 2019]. Conservation now hinges on a handful of remnant populations in Eritrea and Ethiopia.
Biology and Identification
The African wild ass (Equus africanus Heuglin & Fitzinger, 1866) is a member of the family Equidae and the subgenus Asinus. Two subspecies are generally recognized: the Nubian wild ass (E. a. africanus), now likely extinct in the wild, and the surviving Somali wild ass (E. a. somaliensis) [Moehlman et al. 2002; Moehlman et al. 2015]. It is the wild progenitor of the domestic donkey (Equus asinus) [Moehlman et al. 2002].
Adults stand approximately 125–145 cm at the shoulder and weigh around 275 kg, with a head-and-body length near 2 m [Moehlman et al. 2002]. The coat is short and smooth, light grey to fawn, fading to white on the belly and legs. A slender dark dorsal stripe runs from mane to tail in all individuals; the Somali subspecies is further distinguished by horizontal black banding on the lower legs, reminiscent of a zebra, while the Nubian form bore a shoulder cross-stripe [Moehlman et al. 2015]. These individually variable leg-stripe patterns allow researchers to identify specific animals in the field [Moehlman et al. 2002].
African wild asses are superbly adapted to hot, water-scarce environments. They are predominantly grazers and browsers on desert grasses, herbs and shrubs [Tesfai et al. 2021b]. Social structure is fluid: stable bonds occur mainly between mares and their foals, while territorial males may hold large areas around water and resources [Moehlman et al. 2002]. Reproduction is slow—a single foal follows a roughly year-long gestation—which limits population recovery and heightens extinction risk [Tesfai et al. 2019].
Habitat and Range
The African wild ass is a true desert equid, occupying hyper-arid rocky deserts, stony plains, and volcanic foothills of the Danakil (Afar) Depression and adjacent escarpments [Tesfai et al. 2023]. Within these landscapes it relies on patchily distributed permanent water sources and the sparse forage of ephemeral drainages [Tesfai et al. 2021a].
Historically, the species ranged across northeastern Africa, including Sudan's Nubian Desert, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and northern Somalia [Moehlman et al. 2002]. Today its confirmed range has contracted dramatically to remnant populations in the Danakil Desert of Eritrea—notably the Messir Plateau—and parts of the Afar Region of Ethiopia, with the status of any Somali animals highly uncertain [Moehlman et al. 2015; Tesfai et al. 2019]. Surveys indicate that the species' range in Ethiopia and Eritrea has been reduced by approximately 90% relative to its historical extent [Moehlman et al. 2015].
Habitat-suitability modelling for the Danakil Desert of Eritrea identifies only limited patches of suitable terrain, underscoring how restricted and fragmented the remaining habitat has become [Tesfai et al. 2023]. Dry-season access to water is a critical constraint: reproductive females with young foals visit permanent water nightly, travelling on average around 9 km, while other adults may water only every several days [Tesfai et al. 2021a].

Conservation Status
The African wild ass is listed as Critically Endangered (Critically Endangered, 2015 assessment under criterion A2b) on the IUCN Red List, with a decreasing population trend [Moehlman et al. 2015]. The 2015 assessment estimates the global population at roughly 23–200 mature individuals, potentially totalling up to around 400 animals if undersampled areas of Eritrea hold additional ones [Moehlman et al. 2015]. This makes it the most endangered of the wild equids.
The species is listed on CITES Appendix I, the strictest level of international protection, which prohibits commercial international trade in wild-sourced specimens [Moehlman et al. 2015]. It is also protected under national legislation in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan [Moehlman et al. 2015].
The most significant surviving subpopulation is found on the Messir Plateau in the Danakil ecosystem of Eritrea, where a small group of roughly 50 animals has been the subject of sustained field study [Tesfai et al. 2019]. Population-viability modelling for this group highlights its precariousness: limited long-term demographic data, slow reproduction, episodic droughts, and competition with livestock all reduce projected persistence probability, although the population could remain viable under favourable conditions and continued protection [Tesfai et al. 2019]. The historical Nubian subspecies is generally considered extinct in the wild [Moehlman et al. 2015].
Threats
The primary threats to the African wild ass are well documented in the IUCN assessment and field studies [Moehlman et al. 2015; Tesfai et al. 2019]:
- Hunting and persecution — Animals are killed for food and for use in traditional medicine, a pressure intensified by regional conflict and limited enforcement capacity in remote areas [Moehlman et al. 2015].
- Competition with livestock — Growing pastoralist herds compete with wild asses for scarce desert forage and, critically, for limited permanent water, displacing wild asses from the best resources [Tesfai et al. 2021b].
- Restricted water access — Because dry-season survival depends on a few permanent water points, any reduction in access—through livestock crowding or human settlement near water—has outsized demographic effects, especially on lactating females [Tesfai et al. 2021a].
- Hybridization with domestic donkeys — Interbreeding with free-ranging domestic donkeys (Equus asinus) threatens the genetic integrity of remaining wild populations [Moehlman et al. 2015].
- Small-population and stochastic risks — With so few mature individuals, droughts, disease and demographic chance events can drive sharp declines and erode viability [Tesfai et al. 2019].
What Is Being Done
Several real-world measures support the species' survival. The IUCN/SSC Equid Specialist Group's Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan for Equids set out priority research and protection actions for the African wild ass and continues to guide work on the species [Moehlman et al. 2002]. In Ethiopia, two protected areas—Yangudi-Rassa National Park and the Mille-Serdo Wild Ass Reserve, both designated in 1969—were established in part to safeguard wild ass habitat, and Eritrea has identified a high-priority area in the Danakil for nature-reserve protection [Moehlman et al. 2015].
Long-term field research on the Messir Plateau population in Eritrea has produced population-viability analyses, drinking-behaviour studies, and dietary-overlap assessments that directly inform management of water access and livestock grazing [Tesfai et al. 2019; Tesfai et al. 2021a; Tesfai et al. 2021b]. Habitat-suitability modelling is being used to map remaining viable terrain and target survey effort [Tesfai et al. 2023]. The species is also maintained in coordinated managed-care breeding programmes at institutions internationally, providing a genetic reserve and supporting research [Moehlman et al. 2015]. Its CITES Appendix I listing reinforces these national efforts by restricting international trade [Moehlman et al. 2015].
