The American bison is the largest land mammal in North America and an ecological engineer whose grazing once shaped the grasslands of an entire continent. Reduced from tens of millions to a few hundred animals during the nineteenth century, the species has partially recovered — but that recovery is almost entirely a product of active management, and bison functioning as wild now occupy less than 1.2% of their original range [Aune et al. 2017]. This profile examines the bison's biology, the unusual nature of its conservation status, and the programs working to restore it as a wild species.
Biology and Identification
The American bison is a massive, hump-shouldered bovid with a broad head, short curved horns in both sexes, and a dark brown coat that is shaggiest over the forequarters. Two subspecies are recognized: the plains bison (Bison bison bison) and the larger, more northerly wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) [Aune et al. 2017]. The pronounced shoulder hump, supported by elongated vertebral spines and powerful musculature, lets bison swing the head laterally to sweep snow away from winter forage [Aune et al. 2017].
Bison are primarily grazers, feeding mainly on grasses and sedges across all regions, with the diet broadening in summer and autumn to include flowering plants, woody leaves, and lichens; both subspecies aggregate strongly during the May-to-August calving and breeding period [Aune et al. 2017]. Plains bison historically undertook seasonal migrations across the Great Plains, but modern land use has eliminated most of this movement [Aune et al. 2017]. As bulk grazers and wallowers, bison shape plant community structure, nutrient cycling, and habitat for grassland birds and other species.
Habitat and Range
The original range of Bison bison extended from the arid grasslands of northern Mexico, through the Great Plains of the United States and Canada, to the riparian meadows of interior Alaska — the widest natural range of any North American herbivore [Aune et al. 2017]. Plains bison ranged from northern Mexico to central Alberta, while wood bison occupied the northern reaches into Alaska.
Today bison functioning as wild occupy less than 1.2% of that original range, restricted by land use and by wildlife- and disease-management policies, and the species is regionally extinct across most of the U.S. states it once inhabited [Aune et al. 2017]. Bison graze grassland and meadow communities and can persist in arid regions and areas of deep winter snow cover [Aune et al. 2017].

Conservation Status
The American bison is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (e.T2815A45156541), a classification driven not by active decline but by the species' dependence on continuing conservation management: all mature wild individuals occur within active management programs that, if ceased, would cause the species to qualify for a threatened category, making this a conservation-dependent species [Aune et al. 2017]. The current population trend is reported as stable [Aune et al. 2017].
The numbers underlying the listing are revealing. While roughly 300,000 bison are commercially propagated on private farms and ranches as livestock subject to artificial selection, the assessment counts only about 11,248–13,123 mature individuals in wild, free-ranging and semi-free-ranging herds, with just four viable conservation populations exceeding 1,000 animals and thirteen of twenty wild herds numbering fewer than 400 [Aune et al. 2017]. In Canada, the wood bison subspecies is protected under the Species at Risk Act; COSEWIC reassessed it from Threatened to Special Concern in 2013 amid population increases and new wild herds, while the plains bison is assessed as Threatened [Aune et al. 2017; COSEWIC 2013].
Threats
Loss of wild status and small-population effects are central to the bison's classification. Most conservation herds are small (<400), few experience the full range of natural limiting factors such as predation, and only a handful exceed the long-term viability threshold [Aune et al. 2017].
Genetic threats are pervasive. Hybridization between bison subspecies erodes genetic distinctness, and artificial selection in commercial herds raises concern that escaped animals could establish in or interbreed with wild populations [Aune et al. 2017]. A comprehensive genetic survey of US federal bison herds detected domestic cattle introgression in most populations examined, though several flagship national-park herds showed no detectable cattle DNA [Halbert & Derr 2007].
Disease-management depopulation poses a structural risk. Wild populations hosting reportable cattle diseases such as brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis can be culled as a management response, and the threat constrains how freely bison are allowed to range [Aune et al. 2017].
Legal status as livestock complicates conservation. The United States, Canada, and Mexico list bison as both wildlife and domestic livestock, with classification varying among jurisdictions; bison are legally livestock in many U.S. states, limiting wildlife-style management [Aune et al. 2017].
What Is Being Done
Specialist coordination. The IUCN SSC Bison Specialist Group has produced a North American bison conservation assessment and action plan covering the status of public and private herds and providing guidance for ecological restoration [Aune et al. 2017; IUCN BSG 2024].
Federal and protected-area restoration. National parks, refuges, and reserves anchor the largest conservation herds: six of the twenty wild herds, representing the majority of wild animals, are sustained by such protected areas [Aune et al. 2017]. The U.S. Department of the Interior established a Bison Working Group to coordinate restoration across federal agencies, and in Canada wood bison are managed under a national recovery strategy [Aune et al. 2017].
Tribal-led restoration. The Buffalo Treaty, first signed in 2014 among Indigenous tribes and First Nations across the U.S.–Canada border, established an intertribal alliance committed to restoring bison to millions of acres of tribal land and elevating the species' cultural importance [NPS 2016]. Projects such as the Blackfeet Nation's Iinnii Initiative are returning plains bison to ancestral landscapes in partnership with national parks [Aune et al. 2017].
Non-governmental restoration. Conservation organizations including The Nature Conservancy manage conservation herds, and large-scale grassland restoration on the Great Plains is expanding the area available to free-ranging bison; WWF works with national parks, tribal communities, and ranchers toward additional herds of at least 1,000 animals each to support genetic diversity [Aune et al. 2017; WWF 2024].

Citizen science. Photograph and log bison observations on platforms such as iNaturalist when visiting parks and reserves. Verified records support monitoring of distribution.
Policy engagement. Support legislation and agency policies that allow bison to be managed as wildlife on large landscapes and that fund grassland restoration.
Informed consumer choices. Where bison products are purchased, favor producers that support conservation-oriented and ecologically managed herds over intensive commercial operations.
Education outreach. Share accurate information about the difference between commercially propagated bison and wild conservation herds, and about the ecological role of bison as grassland grazers [Aune et al. 2017].
