The Andean condor is among the largest flying birds on Earth and a cultural and ecological icon of the South American Andes. As an obligate scavenger, it performs an essential sanitation role across mountain ecosystems, yet its enormous size, exceptionally slow reproduction, and wide-ranging foraging make it acutely sensitive to human pressures. Long-term declines from poisoning and persecution have moved the species onto the global list of threatened birds [BirdLife 2020; Plaza & Lambertucci 2020]. This profile examines the condor's biology, its range along the Andes, the threats it faces, and the conservation programs working to recover it.
Biology and Identification
The Andean condor is a massive bird, with a wingspan reaching up to about 3.3 m and a weight of up to roughly 15 kg; mean body mass is near 11.3 kg, with males averaging about 12.5 kg and females about 10.1 kg [Wikipedia 2026]. Among raptors and vultures it is unusual in showing reversed size dimorphism with conspicuous plumage and feature differences: males are larger and bear a dark fleshy comb (caruncle) and neck wattle that females lack, and the sexes also differ in iris color [Wikipedia 2026].
Condors are exceptionally long-lived. A captive individual is documented to have reached around 79 years of age, among the longest verified lifespans for any bird [Wikipedia 2026]. Sexual maturity comes late, at roughly five to six years.
As a scavenger, the Andean condor feeds mainly on carrion, favoring the large carcasses of wild and domestic animals, and can travel great distances — on the order of 200 km in a day — in search of food, soaring on mountain thermals and updrafts [Wikipedia 2026]. Its reproductive rate is among the slowest of any bird: a breeding pair typically produces a single egg only about once every two years, leaving populations very slow to recover from losses [Wikipedia 2026; BirdLife 2020].
Habitat and Range
The Andean condor ranges along the Andes and adjacent coastal regions from Venezuela and Colombia in the north, southward through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of the continent [Wikipedia 2026]. It favors open mountainous terrain, high-altitude grasslands, and coastal cliffs where reliable winds support its soaring flight and where carrion is available.
The species' historical range was substantially larger than today's, and northern populations in particular have become small and fragmented, with the species now scarce or locally absent across parts of its former distribution [Plaza & Lambertucci 2020; BirdLife 2020].

Conservation Status
The Andean condor is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, assessed by BirdLife International in 2020 (e.T22697641A181325230), having been uplisted from Near Threatened that year in recognition of rapid declines across its range [BirdLife 2020]. The global population is estimated at no more than about 6,700 mature individuals and is decreasing [BirdLife 2020]. The species is listed on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting commercial international trade [Wikipedia 2026].
Declines are driven principally by human-caused mortality, and the species' extremely low reproductive output means even modest increases in adult deaths can outpace recruitment [BirdLife 2020; Plaza & Lambertucci 2020]. Studies of condors across the Americas have documented widespread lead contamination in blood and bone, underscoring the continental scale of the poisoning problem [Wiemeyer et al. 2017].
Threats
Poisoning is a leading cause of condor mortality. Birds are killed both by deliberate poisoned bait — often set in retaliation for perceived, and largely unfounded, livestock predation — and by secondary lead poisoning from feeding on the carcasses of animals shot with lead ammunition [Plaza & Lambertucci 2020; Wiemeyer et al. 2017].
Direct persecution persists across parts of the range, where condors are shot or otherwise killed because of mistaken beliefs that they attack live livestock; as scavengers, condors feed on already-dead animals [BirdLife 2020].
Lead contamination specifically has been documented at high levels in condor blood and bone across multiple countries, identifying lead hunting ammunition as a primary continental-scale source of poisoning [Wiemeyer et al. 2017].
Slow reproduction compounds every other threat. Because pairs raise at most one chick every two years and mature slowly, populations cannot quickly absorb adult losses, making the species highly sensitive to even low rates of additional mortality [BirdLife 2020; Wikipedia 2026].
What Is Being Done
Captive breeding and reintroduction. The Andean Condor Conservation Program in Argentina, associated with the Bioandina Foundation and founded in 1991, has developed artificial-incubation and human-contact-free hand-rearing techniques, and has rescued, rehabilitated, and released condors across the region as part of a long-running recovery effort [Astore et al. 2017; Bioandina 2024].
Regional studbook and genetics. The program maintains a Latin American regional studbook and uses genetic analysis to guide breeding and release decisions, supporting reintroduction initiatives in several range countries [Astore et al. 2017].
Reducing lead and poison. Research identifying lead ammunition as a primary poisoning source has informed policy measures, including efforts to restrict lead ammunition in protected areas and promote non-lead alternatives, alongside work to reduce the use of poisoned bait [Astore et al. 2017; Wiemeyer et al. 2017].
Rescue and rehabilitation networks. Coordinated networks rescue injured and poisoned condors, treat them, and return recovered birds to the wild, while gathering data that improve understanding of mortality causes across the species' large range [Bioandina 2024].
How Readers Can Help
Support lead-free practices. Backing the transition away from lead hunting ammunition addresses one of the best-documented causes of condor mortality and benefits scavenging wildlife broadly [Wiemeyer et al. 2017].
Citizen science. Report condor sightings through platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist. Verified occurrence records contribute to range mapping and to monitoring populations across a vast and remote distribution.
Policy engagement. Support legislation and enforcement that prohibit the poisoning and shooting of condors and uphold CITES Appendix I protections, and back habitat-protection measures in Andean and coastal ecosystems [BirdLife 2020].
Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information correcting the misperception that condors attack live livestock. Documented misperceptions are a measurable contributor to retaliatory killing of scavenging birds.
