The Asiatic black bear, often called the moon bear for the pale crescent across its chest, ranges in scattered populations from Iran and the Himalayas across Southeast Asia to the Russian Far East, Korea, and Japan. Despite this broad distribution, the species is declining across most of its range, squeezed between habitat loss and an intense, persistent trade in its body parts [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020]. This profile examines the moon bear's biology, the pressures driving its decline, and the conservation work underway to reduce them.
Biology and Identification
The Asiatic black bear is a medium-to-large bear with a glossy black coat, a distinctively pale, V- or crescent-shaped chest marking, and a prominent ruff of longer fur around the neck and shoulders. Males typically weigh about 110–150 kg and females roughly 65–90 kg, with head-and-body length around 120–180 cm [Britannica 2024]. The large, rounded ears set well apart on a broad head are a useful field mark distinguishing it from the sympatric sun bear and sloth bear.
Moon bears are highly arboreal for their size, climbing readily to feed and to build feeding platforms in trees. They are dietary generalists and largely seasonal in their feeding, consuming fruits, nuts (notably oak and beech mast), insects, herbaceous vegetation, and occasional vertebrate prey or carrion [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020]. In the northern parts of the range, bears accumulate fat reserves in autumn and den through winter, while in tropical Southeast Asia denning behaviour is reduced or absent.
The species is generally solitary outside of breeding and mother-cub associations. Reproduction is slow: cubs remain with their mother for at least a year and a half, so females typically breed only every other year, and populations recover gradually from losses — a trait that makes sustained mortality from hunting particularly damaging [IBA 2024; Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020].
Habitat and Range
The Asiatic black bear is primarily a forest species, occupying broad-leaved and coniferous forests from sea level to elevations above 3,700 m, from lowland tropical Southeast Asia up into temperate and montane forests of the Himalayas, China, the Korean Peninsula, the Russian Far East, and Japan; the species spans 18 range countries, with over half of its total range in China [IBA 2024; Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020]. Its distribution is now highly fragmented across this vast longitudinal span.
A GIS-based reconstruction of the species' range found that its distribution has contracted from a historical extent of roughly 15.86 million km² to about 7.85 million km² — a reduction of approximately 49.5% — driven by human land use, habitat fragmentation, and exploitation [Waqar et al. 2024].

A precise global population estimate is not available because the species is difficult to survey across forested, often remote terrain; the IUCN reports a decreasing global trend [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020]. The assessment carries the identifier e.T22824A166528664 (2020) [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020]. As with several wide-ranging carnivores, the global category masks regional variation, with some national populations in steeper decline than others.
Threats
Illegal killing and trade are leading direct pressures. Demand for bear gall bladders and bile for traditional medicine, along with paws and other parts, drives poaching across the range despite CITES Appendix I protection and national laws [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020; CITES 2023].
Bear bile farming is a closely linked concern. Across parts of Asia, large numbers of bears are held in captivity for bile extraction; research in Viet Nam has documented the welfare problems and conservation complexities of the practice, including its interaction with demand for wild-sourced bile [Crudge et al. 2020].
Habitat loss and fragmentation reduce and isolate forest across the range. Conversion of forest to agriculture, logging, and infrastructure shrinks available habitat and the mast-producing trees on which bears depend seasonally [Waqar et al. 2024; Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020].
Human–bear conflict arises where bears raid crops or come into contact with people near forest edges, leading to retaliatory and pre-emptive killing that adds to trade-driven mortality [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020].
What Is Being Done
Specialist coordination. The IUCN SSC Bear Specialist Group compiles country-level status information and conservation guidance for the species, providing the technical foundation — including the population-trend estimates underlying the Red List assessment — for national planning [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020].
International trade controls. The species' CITES Appendix I listing, in place since 1979, prohibits commercial international trade in moon bears and their parts and provides the legal framework for cross-border enforcement against trafficking [CITES 2023].
Tackling bile farming. Conservation organisations and range-state governments are working to phase out bear bile farming and reduce demand, with documented research informing policy on captive-bear management and the risks that farming poses to wild populations [Crudge et al. 2020].
Protected areas and conflict mitigation. Across the range, national wildlife authorities maintain protected forest networks and work with communities on measures to reduce crop-raiding and retaliatory killing, helping to conserve both habitat and bears [Garshelis & Steinmetz 2020].
