The Beluga Sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish on Earth and one of the most ancient lineages of vertebrates still swimming, a living relic of a group that predates the dinosaurs. As an anadromous apex predator of the Caspian and Black Sea basins, it shaped riverine and estuarine food webs for millions of years, undertaking spawning migrations of hundreds of kilometres upriver. Today the species is among the most imperilled large animals in the world, its decline driven overwhelmingly by demand for its roe—the source of the prized black caviar. Its conservation story illustrates how an extraordinarily long-lived, late-maturing species can collapse within a few human generations once commercial exploitation outpaces its slow reproductive cycle.
Biology and Identification
The Beluga Sturgeon belongs to the family Acipenseridae, an ancient group of cartilaginous-skeletoned fishes whose body plan has changed little over tens of millions of years [IUCN 2022]. Sturgeons and paddlefishes as a group are among the most threatened of all fishes, a vulnerability rooted in their longevity, late maturity, and dependence on free-flowing rivers [Birstein 1993]. Like other sturgeons the Beluga has a torpedo-shaped body protected by five longitudinal rows of bony plates called scutes rather than true scales, a heterocercal tail, and a protrusible, toothless mouth preceded by four sensory barbels used to detect prey along the bottom. The Beluga is distinguished from most other sturgeons by its very large, crescent-shaped mouth and short snout, adaptations associated with its predatory rather than purely benthic-feeding habits [Pikitch et al. 2005].
It is the largest of all sturgeons and among the largest freshwater fishes ever recorded. Historical accounts describe specimens exceeding 1,000 kg and lengths well over five metres, though such giants have effectively disappeared under sustained fishing pressure [Pikitch et al. 2005]. The species is also exceptionally long-lived, with individuals capable of surviving for many decades, a trait that compounds its vulnerability because lost old, highly fecund females cannot be quickly replaced.
The Beluga is a piscivore for most of its life. Whereas many sturgeons feed chiefly on invertebrates, adult Beluga prey predominantly on other fish, supplemented by molluscs and crustaceans, occupying a high trophic position within its ecosystems [Pikitch et al. 2005]. This predatory role makes the species ecologically distinct among sturgeons and links its abundance to the structure of fish communities in the Caspian and Black Sea basins.
Reproduction is slow and infrequent, the central biological constraint on the species' recovery. Beluga mature late—commonly well over a decade old—and individual females spawn only once every several years rather than annually [Pikitch et al. 2005]. They are anadromous, living in brackish and marine waters and ascending large rivers to spawn over gravel and rocky substrates. Because reproductive output is concentrated in older animals and dependent on access to upstream spawning grounds, the loss of large adults and the blocking of migration routes have outsized effects on population viability [IUCN 2022].
Habitat and Range
The Beluga Sturgeon is native to the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov, together with the major rivers that feed them, and historically occurred in the Adriatic Sea as well [IUCN 2022]. As an anadromous species it spends most of its life in marine and brackish waters but is dependent on free-flowing large rivers—historically the Volga, Ural, Danube, and others—for spawning, migrating considerable distances upstream to reach suitable gravel-bottomed spawning sites [IUCN 2022].
This dual reliance on both sea and river makes the species acutely sensitive to changes in either habitat. Dams and other in-river barriers have severed access to a large proportion of historical spawning grounds, while degradation of estuarine and marine habitats further reduces survival. The Adriatic population is considered functionally lost, and natural reproduction across much of the remaining range is now severely limited or absent, with several populations sustained only by hatchery releases [IUCN 2022].

Conservation Status
The Beluga Sturgeon is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List [IUCN 2022]. The species was assessed within the 2022 global reassessment of sturgeons, which found that all surviving sturgeon species are at risk of extinction, with Beluga among the most severely threatened [IUCN 2022]. It is also listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which regulates international trade in the species and its products, including caviar [CITES 2023].
Population trends are strongly negative across the range. Estimates indicate dramatic declines over recent generations, with natural reproduction failing in many rivers and remaining wild populations heavily dependent on stocking from hatcheries [IUCN 2022]. The combination of late maturity, infrequent spawning, and continued exploitation means that population recovery, even under reduced pressure, is expected to be slow.
Threats
Overexploitation for caviar. The dominant threat to the Beluga Sturgeon is exploitation for its roe, which is processed into highly valued black caviar. Decades of intensive legal and illegal harvest, often targeting mature females before they spawn, have driven the collapse of wild populations and continue to undermine recovery [Pikitch et al. 2005; IUCN 2022]. Because the most fecund individuals are also the most commercially valuable, fishing pressure falls disproportionately on the animals most important for reproduction.
Poaching and illegal trade. Despite trade controls, illegal fishing and trafficking of caviar and meat remain widespread. Investigations in the Lower Danube and elsewhere have documented persistent poaching even within protected populations, indicating that enforcement gaps allow illicit harvest to continue [Jahrl 2013; IUCN 2022]. Mislabelling and laundering of wild product as farmed further complicates regulation.
Loss of spawning habitat from dams. The construction of dams and other river barriers has blocked migration routes to historical spawning grounds, eliminating natural reproduction across large portions of the range [IUCN 2022]. Flow regulation and channel modification additionally alter the gravel substrates and water conditions on which successful spawning depends.
Pollution and habitat degradation. Agricultural, industrial, and urban pollution in the rivers and seas of the Caspian and Black Sea basins degrades water quality and affects sturgeon survival and reproduction [IUCN 2022]. Combined with habitat fragmentation, these pressures reduce the carrying capacity of the remaining range and hinder the recovery of wild populations.
What Is Being Done
International trade in Beluga Sturgeon and its products is regulated under CITES Appendix II, which requires that exports be accompanied by permits and that trade not be detrimental to the survival of the species; caviar is additionally subject to a universal labelling system intended to distinguish legal from illegal product [CITES 2023]. These controls provide the principal legal framework for limiting commercial pressure on wild populations.
The IUCN SSC Sturgeon Specialist Group coordinates assessment and conservation planning for sturgeons globally, and its 2022 reassessment provided the updated extinction-risk evaluation that underpins current policy and recovery efforts [IUCN 2022]. This scientific coordination helps prioritise actions across the many countries that share the species' range.
Restocking programmes are central to maintaining Beluga populations where natural reproduction has failed. Hatcheries in range states raise and release juveniles in an attempt to sustain populations until conditions permit natural recruitment, though such programmes cannot substitute indefinitely for functioning wild reproduction [IUCN 2022]. Conservation organisations have also pursued anti-poaching enforcement, habitat protection, and efforts to restore river connectivity, particularly in the Danube basin, identified as a critical remaining stronghold for the species [Jahrl 2013].
