The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent on Earth and one of the most recognizable mammals of South America's wetlands. A semi-aquatic grazer that lives in tight social groups along rivers, marshes, and seasonally flooded savannas, it is also an animal of genuine ecological importance: a keystone grazer, a major prey species for large predators, and the subject of decades of research into social behavior and the sustainable use of wildlife [Herrera et al. 2011; López-Arévalo et al. 2023]. This profile examines its biology, range, global conservation standing, and the pressures it faces locally.


Biology and Identification

The capybara is built unmistakably for life in and around water. Adults measure roughly 106–134 cm in body length, stand up to about 60 cm at the shoulder, and weigh 35–66 kg, with females typically slightly heavier than males [Animal Diversity Web 2014]. The body is barrel-shaped and covered in coarse reddish-brown to grayish hair, and the head carries eyes, ears, and nostrils set high on the skull — an arrangement that lets the animal watch, listen, and breathe while almost fully submerged.

Several adaptations mark it as semi-aquatic: the feet are partially webbed for paddling, and an individual can remain completely submerged for up to about five minutes when escaping danger [Animal Diversity Web 2014]. Capybaras are herbivores feeding mainly on grasses and aquatic plants, supplemented by bark and fruit, and they practice coprophagy to extract more nutrients from fibrous vegetation [Animal Diversity Web 2014].

Capybaras are highly social. In the seasonally flooded llanos of Venezuela, stable groups typically contain a handful to a dozen or more adults built around a dominant male, related females, young, and subordinate males in a linear dominance hierarchy [Herrera & Macdonald 1989; Herrera et al. 2011]. Vigilance scales with group size and social rank, so animals in larger groups spend more time feeding and less time scanning for danger [Yáber & Herrera 1994]. Females give birth after a gestation of roughly 150 days to litters that commonly number around four young [Animal Diversity Web 2014].


Habitat and Range

The capybara is distributed across much of tropical and subtropical South America, including most of Brazil, the Venezuelan and Colombian llanos, Uruguay, and southward into the Argentine pampas, reaching west toward the Andes [Animal Diversity Web 2014]. It is closely tied to water: rivers, lakes, marshes, and seasonally flooded grasslands all provide the combination of grazing and standing water the species depends on.

Habitat use shifts with the seasons. As pools shrink in the dry season, multiple groups may converge on remaining water bodies, forming large aggregations before dispersing again with the rains [Herrera et al. 2011]. The species is also adaptable to human-modified landscapes; studies in Brazil show capybaras readily occupying agricultural and peri-urban areas where water and forage remain available, a flexibility that brings both resilience and new conflicts [Dias et al. 2020].

Conservation Status

The capybara is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment published in 2016 (assessment ID e.T10300A22190005) [IUCN 2016]. The listing reflects the species' wide distribution, presumed large population, occurrence in numerous protected areas, and the absence of evidence that it is declining fast enough to approach a threatened category. The global population trend is classified as stable [IUCN 2016].

The capybara is not listed in any CITES Appendix, so there are no species-level international trade controls under the convention [CITES 2025]. Trade in capybara products is therefore regulated by national legislation in range states rather than by CITES.

A favorable global status does not mean every population is secure. The IUCN notes that some local populations are in decline from over-hunting, and that habitat conversion can reduce the wetland and savanna areas the species needs [IUCN 2016]. In several countries capybaras are also managed as a harvested resource, and the outcome of that use depends heavily on how harvests are regulated [López-Arévalo et al. 2023].


Threats

Over-hunting at the local scale. Capybaras are hunted for meat and hides across much of their range. Where harvest is unregulated or illegal, local populations can be driven down even though the species remains abundant overall [IUCN 2016]. Selective harvesting that skews the sex ratio is a particular concern, as it can reduce reproductive output and risk local collapse [López-Arévalo et al. 2023].

Habitat loss and wetland conversion. Drainage of wetlands, agricultural expansion, and loss of seasonally flooded grassland remove the grazing-plus-water mosaic capybaras require, fragmenting populations in developed regions [IUCN 2016].

Human–wildlife conflict. As capybaras expand into farmland and peri-urban areas, they can damage crops and come into closer contact with people, livestock, and pets — interactions that can prompt culling and that carry public-health dimensions, since capybaras are important hosts for Amblyomma ticks [Dias et al. 2020].

Natural predation pressure. Capybaras are a primary prey species for jaguars, pumas, anacondas, and caimans. In the southern Pantanal, kill-rate studies show capybaras feature prominently among jaguar prey, underscoring the species' central role in food webs [Cavalcanti & Gese 2010].


What Is Being Done

Global assessment and monitoring. The IUCN Red List assessment provides the baseline for the species' conservation status and is periodically reviewed, with the population trend tracked as stable [IUCN 2016].

Protected areas. A large share of the capybara's range falls within national parks, reserves, and private protected lands across the llanos, Pantanal, and Amazon basin, securing core wetland habitat [IUCN 2016].

Regulated sustainable use. In parts of Venezuela and Colombia, capybaras are managed under legal harvest frameworks designed to make use compatible with conservation. Research on Colombia's program documents the advances and challenges of regulating offtake so populations remain viable, emphasizing science-based quotas over open-access hunting [López-Arévalo et al. 2023].

Behavioral and ecological research. Long-term studies of capybara social structure, territoriality, and management implications continue to inform how groups respond to harvesting, habitat change, and density [Herrera & Macdonald 1989; Maldonado-Chaparro & Blumstein 2008].


How Readers Can Help

Support wetland conservation. The capybara's future is tied to the health of South American wetlands and flooded savannas. Backing organizations and policies that protect these habitats benefits the species alongside the many others that share them.

Favor science-based management. Where capybaras are legally harvested, support for regulated, quota-based programs grounded in population monitoring is more likely to sustain populations than unmanaged hunting [López-Arévalo et al. 2023].

Contribute to citizen science. Logging capybara sightings on platforms such as iNaturalist adds verifiable occurrence data that helps refine range maps and informs future assessments.

Share accurate information. The capybara's popularity is an opportunity. Communicating its real ecological role and the genuine local pressures it faces helps move public interest toward effective conservation.
