The cougar (Puma concolor) — also known as the puma, mountain lion, panther, or catamount — is the most widely distributed large land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. A single, secretive cat ranges from the Canadian Yukon to the southern tip of Chile, through deserts, rainforests, snowfields, and the high Andes. Despite carrying more common names than almost any other animal, the cougar lives largely unseen, an ambush hunter whose presence is felt across ecosystems far more often than it is witnessed [Nielsen 2015]. This spotlight reviews the cougar's biology, its range, and the conservation realities that vary dramatically across its distribution.


Biology and Identification

The cougar is a large, slender cat with a uniformly tawny to grayish coat, a pale underbelly, and a long, dark-tipped tail that can account for nearly a third of its total length. Unlike the big cats of the genus Panthera, the cougar cannot roar; it communicates through purrs, chirps, hisses, and the caterwauls associated with the breeding season. Adults vary considerably in size across the range, with northern and southern animals tending to be larger than those near the equator — a classic example of Bergmann's rule in a wide-ranging carnivore.

Cougars are obligate carnivores and ambush predators. In North America their diet is dominated by deer, while across Central and South America prey ranges from guanaco and capybara to small rodents and birds, reflecting the cat's dietary flexibility. As a solitary apex or near-apex predator, the cougar exerts strong top-down influence on prey; long-term studies have linked declines in cougar density to cascading ecological change, including overbrowsing by deer and erosion of riparian habitat [Ripple 2006]. Cougars are mostly solitary outside of mating and mother-offspring groups, and the species' social organization centers on overlapping but largely exclusive territories [Logan 2001].


Habitat and Range

Few terrestrial mammals match the cougar's habitat breadth. The species occupies virtually every major ecosystem of the Americas — coniferous forest, tropical lowland rainforest, swamp, grassland, arid scrub, and montane terrain reaching altitudes near 5,800 meters in the southern Andes [Nielsen 2015]. This adaptability is the foundation of the species' global resilience, but it has not protected the cougar everywhere. Following European colonization, the cat was extirpated from the entire eastern half of North America within roughly two centuries, surviving in that region only as the isolated Florida population [Nielsen 2015].

In recent decades cougars have shown a remarkable capacity to recolonize lost ground. Dispersing subadult males can travel astonishing distances in search of unoccupied territory: one young male was documented moving more than 2,450 kilometers in a straight line from the Black Hills of South Dakota to Connecticut, where it was killed by a vehicle — the longest dispersal ever recorded for the species [Hawley 2016]. Such movements depend on connected landscapes, and habitat fragmentation is now one of the central challenges for cougar persistence near growing cities.

Conservation Status

Globally, the cougar is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its vast geographic range and its status as one of the most widely distributed mammals in the Western Hemisphere [Nielsen 2015]. The most recent assessment (2015, ID e.T18868A50663436) nonetheless records a decreasing global population trend and cautions that the status of many Central and South American populations is poorly known and suspected to be declining [Nielsen 2015]. In international trade, the species is listed on CITES Appendix II, with the Central American populations P. c. costaricensis (Costa Rica and Panama) and the Florida subspecies P. c. coryi listed on the more restrictive Appendix I.

A favorable global category, however, masks acute peril at the population level. The Florida panther (P. c. coryi) was listed as Endangered under United States law in 1967 and remains so today, with an estimated 120 to 230 adults confined largely to South Florida [USFWS 2024]. By the early 1990s inbreeding had produced kinked tails, heart defects, and poor fertility; the introduction of eight female Texas pumas in 1995 restored genetic diversity and tripled kitten survival in a landmark case of genetic rescue [Johnson 2010]. The eastern cougar subspecies (P. c. couguar), by contrast, was formally declared extinct and removed from the U.S. endangered species list in 2018 [USFWS 2018].


Threats

The primary threats to cougars are habitat loss, fragmentation, and conflict with people. As cities expand, populations become severed by highways and development, trapping cats in genetic islands. In the Santa Monica Mountains of greater Los Angeles, modeling found a high probability of local extinction within 50 years unless connectivity is restored to allow at least one migrant per generation — empirical support for the classic "extinction vortex" in which genetic and demographic decline reinforce one another [Benson 2016].

Vehicle collisions are a leading cause of mortality in these fragmented populations, and retaliatory or precautionary killing follows attacks on livestock. Direct attacks on people are extremely rare relative to the number of human-cougar encounters, but they shape public attitudes and management policy; a systematic analysis of 386 documented encounters found that fatal outcomes were uncommon and influenced by identifiable behavioral and situational factors [Mattson 2011]. Across Central and South America, poorly documented hunting, prey depletion, and habitat conversion are believed to be driving quieter declines that the global Least Concern listing does not capture [Nielsen 2015].


What Is Being Done

Conservation responses span genetics, infrastructure, and coexistence. The Florida panther program combines habitat protection, monitoring, and the genetic rescue achieved through the 1995 Texas introductions, which remains one of the best-documented successes in carnivore conservation [Johnson 2010]. In fragmented western landscapes, wildlife crossings and underpasses are being built to reconnect isolated populations and reduce road mortality, addressing the connectivity deficit identified in extinction-risk models [Benson 2016].

Legal protections under CITES regulate international trade, while national and state agencies manage hunting quotas, livestock-conflict response, and research [Nielsen 2015]. Long-term field studies continue to refine understanding of cougar territory, dispersal, and social behavior, providing the evidence base for landscape-scale planning [Logan 2001]. Coexistence programs that reduce livestock losses and inform residents about cougar behavior help lower the retaliatory killing that follows conflict [Mattson 2011].
