The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest members of the deer family and a defining large herbivore of North American and Central Asian grasslands and forests. The name "elk" is a source of long-standing confusion: in North America it denotes the wapiti described here, whereas in Europe "elk" refers to the moose (Alces alces), an entirely different animal. Long treated as a New World form of the European red deer (Cervus elaphus), the wapiti is now recognized as a distinct species on the basis of mitochondrial DNA evidence [Ludt et al. 2004]. As a dominant grazer, the elk shapes plant communities and forms the principal prey base for large carnivores across its range; its modern history is also one of dramatic decline after European colonization followed by one of the most successful large-mammal restorations on the continent [Brook et al. 2018].


Biology and Identification

Elk are large, sexually dimorphic ungulates. Bulls weigh roughly 178–497 kg and cows 171–292 kg, with the Roosevelt subspecies (Cervus canadensis roosevelti) reaching the upper extreme of body mass [Brook et al. 2018]. Adults are tawny to reddish-brown over the body with a darker neck mane and a distinctive pale rump patch, a coloration that readily separates the wapiti from the dark, long-legged moose with which it is often confused in name.

Only bulls grow antlers. These bony structures regrow annually, can reach substantial size in mature males, and are shed and regenerated each year — among the fastest tissue growth recorded in mammals. Elk are predominantly grazers, feeding on grasses, sedges, and forbs, and shifting toward browse such as twigs, bark, and shrubs in winter when herbaceous forage is scarce [Brook et al. 2018]. This dietary flexibility underlies the species' ability to occupy habitats ranging from open steppe to closed coniferous forest.

Elk are gregarious and seasonally migratory in many populations, forming large herds outside the breeding season. During the autumn rut, dominant bulls defend harems of cows and advertise status through loud vocalizations known as bugling. Gestation lasts approximately eight to nine months, and cows typically produce a single calf [Brook et al. 2018].


Habitat and Range

The elk is native to North America and to Central and East Asia, occupying open grasslands, prairies, and steppe as well as a wide variety of forest types, from dry conifer stands to mixed conifer–broadleaf woodland and montane meadow systems [Brook et al. 2018]. This ecological breadth is one reason the species has proven highly resilient where it is protected from overharvest.

Historically the wapiti ranged across most of temperate North America. European colonization drove extirpation across the eastern and central portions of that range: the eastern elk (Cervus canadensis canadensis) was lost from the United States by the late nineteenth century, and the southwestern Merriam's elk disappeared in the early twentieth century [Eastern Elk 2024; Merriam's Elk 2024]. In Asia, populations persist in fragmented form, and some regional subspecies are far more imperiled than the species as a whole [Brook et al. 2018].

Conservation Status

The elk is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2018, reflecting a large global population, a broad geographic distribution, and a stable-to-increasing overall trend [Brook et al. 2018]. This favorable global status, however, masks deep regional contrasts. The species Cervus canadensis as a whole is not listed on the CITES appendices and is not the unit of concern in most international protection; closely related Central Asian red deer assessed separately are far more imperiled — the Kashmir hangul (Cervus hanglu hanglu) carries its own Critically Endangered assessment and a population of only a few hundred animals [IUCN SSC 2017].

The North American recovery is the species' defining conservation story. Following heavy overhunting and habitat conversion, the continental population reached a low estimated at roughly 90,000 animals in the early twentieth century before protected areas, harvest regulation, and large-scale translocation programs reversed the decline; by the late twentieth century numbers had grown to roughly one million animals across North America [Brook et al. 2018]. Reintroductions have re-established elk far outside their twentieth-century refugia: Kentucky, which began releases in 1997, surpassed 11,000 elk and now supports the largest herd east of the Rocky Mountains [RMEF 2022].


Threats

Historical overexploitation and habitat conversion produced the species' near-collapse across eastern and central North America. Although range-wide numbers have recovered, the legacy of those losses persists in the absence of elk from much of their former distribution and in the extinction of the eastern and Merriam's subspecies [Eastern Elk 2024; Merriam's Elk 2024].

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is the most significant emerging threat to North American elk. CWD is a fatal, transmissible prion disease of cervids; infectious prions are shed in saliva, urine, and feces and persist in the environment for years, enabling indirect transmission and complicating control [Belsare et al. 2021]. Human-assisted movement of live cervids and artificial congregation of animals are recognized drivers of geographic spread, and modeling indicates that proactive surveillance and management are required to slow establishment in newly exposed populations [Belsare et al. 2021].

Regional habitat loss and fragmentation continue to threaten Asian populations and small isolated forms, where the favorable global status of the species offers little protection at the local scale [Brook et al. 2018].


What Is Being Done

Protected areas and regulated harvest. The North American recovery was built on the establishment of national parks and refuges, enforcement against unregulated killing, and science-based harvest management — a combination that allowed remnant herds to expand and recolonize [Brook et al. 2018].

Translocation and reintroduction. Large-scale capture-and-release programs moved elk from surplus herds into vacant historical range across the continent. Kentucky's restoration, begun in 1997, illustrates the approach: a series of releases produced a herd exceeding 11,000 animals that has itself served as a source for reintroductions to other eastern states [RMEF 2022].

Predator restoration and ecosystem recovery. The 1995–1996 reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park, where elk are the primary prey, reduced and redistributed an overabundant elk herd and was followed by measurable recovery of riparian willow, aspen, and cottonwood that had been suppressed during decades of wolf absence [Ripple & Beschta 2012; Beschta & Ripple 2016]. The relative contributions of reduced elk numbers versus changes in elk behavior remain an active area of research, but the documented vegetation response illustrates the elk's central role in trophic dynamics [Beschta & Ripple 2016].

Disease surveillance. Wildlife agencies across North America monitor cervid populations for CWD, restrict the movement of live and harvested animals, and apply model-informed strategies intended to detect and contain the disease before it becomes established [Belsare et al. 2021].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Photograph and log elk observations through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified occurrence records contribute to range mapping and to monitoring the spread of reintroduced herds.

Support disease-smart practices. Where local regulations address chronic wasting disease — including carcass-transport rules and prohibitions on feeding or baiting cervids — following them helps limit the human-assisted spread that drives CWD into new areas [Belsare et al. 2021].

Policy engagement. Support funding for state and provincial wildlife agencies, protected-area networks, and habitat-connectivity programs that underpin elk management and the recovery of the predators and plant communities tied to elk.

Education outreach. Share accurate information about the difference between the North American elk (wapiti) and the European "elk" (moose), and about the ecological role of large grazers, with schools, community groups, and social networks.
