The emperor penguin is the largest of all living penguins and the only bird that breeds through the depths of the Antarctic winter, completing its life cycle on and around the sea ice that rings the continent. Its dependence on stable, coast-fastened ice makes it a sensitive indicator of conditions in the Southern Ocean, and the rapid decline of Antarctic sea ice over the past decade has moved the species onto the global list of threatened birds [IUCN 2026; BAS 2026]. Biology and Identification
The emperor penguin is a large, heavy-bodied seabird, averaging roughly 115 cm in body length and weighing about 22 to 45 kg, with males typically heavier than females [Wikipedia 2026]. Adults are unmistakable: deep black covers the head, back, and the dorsal surface of the flippers, contrasting with white underparts, a pale-yellow upper breast, and bright yellow-orange ear patches — a combination of size and coloration that distinguishes the emperor from every other penguin species.
The species is among the most accomplished divers of any bird. Foraging dives commonly last on the order of 20 minutes, and recorded depths reach approximately 535 m, allowing emperors to pursue prey well below the reach of most competitors [Wikipedia 2026]. Their diet is dominated by fish — Antarctic silverfish are a mainstay — supplemented by Antarctic krill and cephalopods such as squid, with the relative proportions shifting by season and location [Wikipedia 2026].
Reproduction is extraordinary among birds. Emperors are the only penguin to breed during the Antarctic winter, gathering in dense colonies on fast ice. The female lays a single egg, weighing roughly 460–470 g, then returns to sea to feed while the male incubates the egg on his feet beneath a fold of skin for just over two months through temperatures far below freezing [Wikipedia 2026]. This reliance on a long, stable ice platform is the central vulnerability of the species' life history.
Habitat and Range
Emperor penguins are endemic to Antarctica, breeding almost exclusively in the band of latitudes between roughly 66° and 77° south [Wikipedia 2026]. They depend on landfast sea ice — ice anchored to the coastline, the seafloor, or grounded icebergs — as the platform on which they court, lay, incubate, and raise chicks, and on the surrounding pack ice and open water for foraging. As of recent satellite surveys, around 66 breeding colonies have been identified around the continent, almost all of them sited on fast ice [ASOC 2024].
Because emperors breed on ice rather than land, their colonies can shift location between years, and the timing of ice formation and break-up governs whether a breeding season succeeds or fails. When fast ice breaks up before chicks have grown their waterproof adult plumage, entire cohorts can be lost.

Conservation Status
The emperor penguin is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, assessed by BirdLife International in 2026 (e.T22697752A197622453); the species was uplisted from Near Threatened in this most recent assessment [IUCN 2026; BAS 2026]. The reclassification reflects projections that the global population could halve by the 2080s under current greenhouse-gas trajectories, driven by the loss of the sea-ice habitat on which breeding depends [IUCN 2026].
Population monitoring has been transformed by high-resolution satellite imagery, which makes it possible to detect colonies across the entire continent [Fretwell & Trathan 2012]. A continent-wide satellite census estimated roughly 595,000 adult birds, and later analysis documented a loss of around 10% of the population — more than 20,000 adults — between 2009 and 2018 [IUCN 2026; Fretwell & Trathan 2012]. Penguins are not listed under CITES, but the emperor penguin received protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, where it was listed as threatened in a final rule effective in 2022 [USFWS 2022].
Threats
Sea-ice loss is the overriding threat. Emperor penguins require fast ice that persists long enough each year for chicks to fledge; early or extensive break-up causes breeding failure. Over the five years from 2018 to 2022, an estimated 42% of colonies — 28 of 66 — likely experienced total or partial breeding failure linked to fast-ice break-up in at least one year [ASOC 2024]. Antarctic sea-ice extent has reached record lows in recent years, intensifying this pressure [BAS 2026].
Climate change drives sea-ice decline and also alters the abundance and distribution of the fish and krill on which emperors feed. Reduced prey availability compounds the direct loss of breeding habitat [IUCN 2026].
Pressure on Southern Ocean prey from commercial fisheries, particularly for Antarctic krill, can reduce food available to penguins in foraging areas, adding to climate-driven changes in the marine food web [ASOC 2024].
What Is Being Done
Continent-scale monitoring. Satellite remote sensing now lets researchers locate colonies and track population change across all of Antarctica, providing the data underpinning IUCN assessments and management decisions [Fretwell & Trathan 2012].
International legal protection. The species' listing as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act requires U.S. agencies to evaluate how activities such as fisheries and greenhouse-gas-emitting projects affect the penguin, and directs additional resources toward its conservation [USFWS 2022].
Antarctic Treaty advocacy. Scientists and conservation bodies have repeatedly urged Antarctic Treaty parties to designate the emperor penguin as a Specially Protected Species under the Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, a measure that would strengthen safeguards for the species and its habitat [ASOC 2024].
Southern Ocean management. Efforts within the Antarctic Treaty System, including work under the body responsible for conserving Antarctic marine living resources, address krill-fishery management and marine protected areas that overlap penguin foraging grounds [ASOC 2024].
