Galapagos Land Iguana

A century after Charles Darwin described iguanas so numerous on Santiago Island that his party "could not for some time find a spot free from their burrows," the Galápagos Land Iguana had vanished from that island entirely — a collapse driven almost wholly by animals humans carried ashore. Today Conolophus subcristatus, a heavy-bodied, golden-yellow lizard endemic to the Galápagos archipelago of Ecuador, persists across roughly a dozen islands but is listed as VU (Vulnerable) on the IUCN Red List, with fewer than 10,000 mature individuals estimated rangewide [Kumar et al. 2020]. Its story is unusual among threatened reptiles: the principal threats are not the iguana's own biology but introduced mammals, and several of its lost populations have been deliberately rebuilt through one of the longest-running reptile reintroduction efforts in the world.


Biology and Identification

The Galápagos Land Iguana, Conolophus subcristatus (Gray, 1831), is a large iguanid lizard in the family Iguanidae and one of three recognised land-iguana species in the endemic Galápagos genus Conolophus, alongside C. pallidus (Santa Fe) and C. marthae (the pink iguana of Wolf Volcano) [Lewbart et al. 2021]. Adults are robustly built and sexually dimorphic: males reach a snout–vent length near 60 cm and total lengths of roughly 100–107 cm, while females are smaller, with snout–vent lengths around 50 cm; large males can exceed 13 kg [Reptiles of Ecuador 2024]. The species is recognised by its blunt head, a low dorsal crest of short spines, powerful claw-bearing limbs for digging, and coloration ranging from brownish-grey to a vivid yellow-gold [Kumar et al. 2020].

Land iguanas are diurnal and primarily herbivorous, feeding on the pads, fruit, and flowers of Opuntia cactus alongside a wide range of leaves, grasses, and seasonal foliage; cactus also supplies much of their water in the arid lowlands they favour [Reptiles of Ecuador 2024]. They are slow-maturing and long-lived, with longevity estimated at several decades. Reproduction involves striking nesting migrations: on Fernandina Island, females travel substantial distances and descend into the volcano's caldera to nest, excavating burrows in which they lay clutches typically of around a dozen eggs that incubate for roughly three to four months before hatching [Werner 1983]. Males defend terrestrial territories through head-bobbing displays and combat during the breeding season [Werner 1983].


Habitat and Range

Conolophus subcristatus is endemic to the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, and occupies the archipelago's arid and transition zones — dry deciduous shrubland, cactus scrub, sparse grasslands, and vegetated volcanic terrain — from coastal lowlands to higher elevations on the larger islands [Kumar et al. 2020]. Extant populations occur on several islands including Fernandina, Isabela, Santa Cruz, Baltra, North Seymour, and South Plaza, with reintroduced populations on Santiago and Baltra [Reptiles of Ecuador 2024; Ortiz-Catedral et al. 2023].

The species' distribution has contracted markedly since human settlement. It was extirpated from Santiago and from Baltra during the twentieth century, and historic populations on some islands were lost or reduced to remnants by introduced mammals [Kumar et al. 2020]. The largest and most intact population survives on Fernandina, the youngest major island and the only one essentially free of introduced predators and browsers; a 2023 capture–mark–recapture study there recorded high local densities and underscored the island's importance as a stronghold and reference population for the species [Ortiz-Catedral et al. 2023]. Because the iguana's range is fragmented across islands of differing conservation status, subpopulation trends vary widely, with some recovering and others still suppressed [Kumar et al. 2020].

Conservation Status

The Galápagos Land Iguana is listed as VU (Vulnerable) on the IUCN Red List, under the most recent assessment published in 2020 (criteria A2abce; B1ab+2ab; C1) by Kumar, Gentile and Grant [Kumar et al. 2020]. The total population is estimated at fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, and the overall population trend was assessed as decreasing, reflecting historical losses and continuing pressure from introduced species across much of the range [Kumar et al. 2020].

All three Galápagos land-iguana species are also protected under international trade law: since the species was first brought under CITES control in the 1970s, Conolophus subcristatus has been listed on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international commercial trade through a permit system [CITES 2024]. This listing has become increasingly relevant because Galápagos iguanas command high prices in the international pet trade and have been the target of trafficking networks that launder wild-caught animals as captive-bred exports through transit countries [Auliya et al. 2025].

Subpopulation status differs by island. Fernandina holds the species' most robust and predator-free population [Ortiz-Catedral et al. 2023], whereas formerly extirpated islands such as Santiago and Baltra now host reintroduced populations whose long-term viability depends on sustained invasive-species control [Kumar et al. 2020]. Health surveys of land iguanas on Santa Cruz and North Seymour provide baseline physiological data used to monitor population condition over time [Lewbart et al. 2019].


Threats

  1. Introduced mammalian predators. Feral cats, dogs, pigs, and black rats prey on eggs, hatchlings, and juveniles, and are the principal cause of historical population collapses and local extirpations across the archipelago [Kumar et al. 2020].

  2. Introduced herbivores and competitors. Feral goats, donkeys, and other browsers degrade the arid vegetation iguanas depend on for food and cover, reducing habitat quality and forage availability [Kumar et al. 2020].

  3. Illegal wildlife trade. High demand in the exotic-pet market drives trafficking of Galápagos iguanas, with documented laundering of wild-caught animals through international permit systems — a pressure that disproportionately affects small, range-restricted island species [Auliya et al. 2025].

  4. Disease and introduced pathogens. As populations are concentrated on islands and subject to translocation, monitoring for parasites and disease is important; baseline health assessments help detect emerging pathogen risks early [Lewbart et al. 2019].

  5. Restricted range and stochastic events. Endemism to a single archipelago leaves the species exposed to volcanic activity, drought, and climate variability, where a single catastrophic event could affect a substantial fraction of a subpopulation [Kumar et al. 2020].


What Is Being Done

Galápagos land iguanas are protected within Galápagos National Park, and their recovery is among the longest-sustained reptile conservation efforts in the region. The Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galápagos National Park Directorate operated captive-rearing and "head-starting" programs from the mid-twentieth century onward, raising vulnerable young past the life stage most exposed to introduced predators before release [Kumar et al. 2020].

A landmark reintroduction took place on Santiago Island in January 2019, when staff from the Galápagos National Park Directorate and Island Conservation translocated roughly 1,400 iguanas from the dense North Seymour population to Santiago — an island where the species had been absent for more than a century — re-establishing a breeding population and restoring the iguana's ecological role as a seed disperser and grazer [Kumar et al. 2020]. Invasive-mammal eradication campaigns on islands such as Baltra and Santiago have been essential precursors to these releases, since reintroduction succeeds only where predators have been removed [Kumar et al. 2020].

Ongoing scientific monitoring underpins this work. Capture–mark–recapture surveys on Fernandina provide rigorous population baselines for the species' stronghold [Ortiz-Catedral et al. 2023], and veterinary health assessments establish reference physiological values used to evaluate the condition of wild and translocated animals [Lewbart et al. 2019; Lewbart et al. 2021]. At the international level, CITES regulation and recent trafficking investigations are sharpening scrutiny of the iguana trade [Auliya et al. 2025; CITES 2024].


How Readers Can Help

Readers can support Galápagos land iguana conservation through accurate, well-documented engagement. Observations of wildlife — including iguanas seen during regulated visits — can be contributed to open biodiversity platforms such as iNaturalist and GBIF, where verified records help researchers track distribution and population condition over time. When visiting protected areas, following Galápagos National Park rules on distance, trails, and not feeding wildlife directly reduces disturbance to nesting and foraging animals.

Because the international pet trade is a documented threat, prospective reptile keepers can choose never to purchase wild-sourced or questionably "captive-bred" Galápagos iguanas, and can report suspected wildlife-trade offences to the relevant national CITES authorities [Auliya et al. 2025]. Supporting biosecurity — never moving plants, seeds, or animals between islands — helps prevent the introduction of the predators and competitors that drive most population declines [Kumar et al. 2020]. Finally, reading and sharing peer-reviewed research and official assessments, rather than unverified claims, strengthens public understanding of what this species actually needs.
