The gray whale is a coastal baleen whale famous for one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal — a round trip between Arctic feeding grounds and the warm-water lagoons of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. Hunted to the brink across two oceans, the species today tells two contrasting stories: a remarkable recovery in the eastern North Pacific, a precarious remnant population in the western North Pacific, and a vanished lineage in the North Atlantic [Cooke 2018; NOAA Fisheries 2024]. This profile examines the gray whale's biology, its trans-oceanic movements, and the conservation history that has shaped its modern status.


Biology and Identification

The gray whale is the sole living species in the genus Eschrichtius and the family Eschrichtiidae, a lineage distinct from the rorquals and right whales [Cooke 2018]. Adults typically measure 13–15 m in length and weigh on the order of 30–40 tonnes, with females averaging slightly larger than males [NOAA Fisheries 2024]. The body is slate-gray, mottled with lighter patches and encrusted with barnacles and orange whale lice that give individuals a distinctive marbled appearance. Unlike most large whales, the gray whale has no dorsal fin — instead, a low dorsal hump is followed by a series of knuckle-like ridges along the tailstock.

Gray whales are among the most specialized benthic feeders of all cetaceans. Rather than lunging through open water, an individual rolls onto its side, draws bottom sediment and prey into its mouth, and filters the mixture through 130–180 coarse baleen plates per side, expelling mud and water and retaining small invertebrates [NOAA Fisheries 2024]. Their primary prey is dense beds of tube-dwelling amphipods on shallow Arctic and subarctic sea floors, supplemented opportunistically by mysids, polychaete worms, and other benthic and epibenthic invertebrates [Coyle et al. 2007]. This feeding behavior leaves visible pits and sediment plumes on the seabed and reworks large volumes of bottom substrate.

The species is best known for its migration. Eastern North Pacific gray whales travel an estimated 16,000–20,000 km round trip each year between summer feeding areas in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas and winter calving lagoons along Baja California [NOAA Fisheries 2024]. A single satellite-tracked female from the western population completed a documented round trip of more than 22,000 km — among the longest migrations recorded for any mammal [Mate et al. 2015].


Habitat and Range

Gray whales are coastal animals that spend much of their lives within a few tens of kilometers of shore. The eastern North Pacific population summers in the shallow, highly productive seas of the Arctic and subarctic and winters in the sheltered lagoons of the Baja California Peninsula, where females give birth and nurse their calves [NOAA Fisheries 2024]. The much smaller western North Pacific group feeds in summer and autumn off northeastern Sakhalin Island and southeastern Kamchatka in the Russian Far East; satellite tracking has shown that at least some of these whales migrate across the Pacific to wintering areas off North America [Mate et al. 2015; MMC 2023].

A third lineage once inhabited the North Atlantic on both the European and North American coasts. Subfossil and historical records indicate this population was extirpated by roughly the early 18th century, before scientific documentation, and is considered extinct [Alter et al. 2015]. Occasional sightings of gray whales in the Atlantic and Mediterranean in recent decades are interpreted as vagrants from the Pacific that reached the region through ice-free Arctic passages.

In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific calving-lagoon locations, nearshore aggregation sites, and seasonal movement details beyond published regional descriptions are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The gray whale is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List at the global species level, an evaluation reflecting the large and broadly recovered eastern North Pacific population [Cooke 2018]. That global category, however, conceals sharp regional contrasts. The western North Pacific subpopulation is separately assessed as Endangered; numbering only a few hundred animals and with very few mature reproductive females, it was reclassified from Critically Endangered in 2018 following evidence of slow growth and mixing with the eastern population [Cooke et al. 2018; MMC 2023]. The historic North Atlantic population is extinct [Alter et al. 2015].

The eastern North Pacific population is the conservation success at the heart of the global listing. Driven to low numbers by 19th- and early-20th-century commercial whaling, it has since recovered to near its estimated historic abundance; modeling placed it at roughly 85% of its carrying capacity by 2009 [Punt & Wade 2012]. All gray whales are listed on CITES Appendix I, which prohibits commercial international trade [CITES 2023]. Internationally, the species is protected from commercial whaling under the International Whaling Commission, with limited aboriginal subsistence harvests authorized for Chukotkan and Makah communities [IWC 2024].


Threats

Climate-driven prey change. Gray whales depend on dense, energy-rich beds of benthic amphipods in the northern Bering Sea. Surveys have documented substantial declines in the biomass of these amphipod communities in the Chirikov Basin between the 1980s and the early 2000s, raising concern that warming and shifting sea-ice dynamics are reducing the carrying capacity of key feeding grounds [Coyle et al. 2007].

Unusual Mortality Event. From late 2018 through 2023, an Unusual Mortality Event affected eastern North Pacific gray whales, with hundreds of strandings along the coasts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Researchers linked the elevated deaths and reduced calf production to poor body condition and starvation, consistent with diminished prey availability in the Arctic feeding areas [Christiansen et al. 2021; NOAA Fisheries 2024]. Subsequent surveys recorded a marked decline in the eastern population from a peak near 27,000 to roughly half that level [Stewart & Weller 2021].

Industrial activity in the western range. The small western North Pacific group feeds near oil-and-gas development off Sakhalin Island, exposing it to noise from seismic surveys and the risk of ship strikes — pressures of disproportionate concern given the subpopulation's small size [MMC 2023].

Entanglement and vessel strikes. As coastal migrants that pass through busy shipping lanes and fishing grounds, gray whales are vulnerable to entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with vessels along their migratory corridor [NOAA Fisheries 2024].


What Is Being Done

International protection. The end of commercial whaling for gray whales under the International Whaling Commission, combined with the CITES Appendix I listing, removed the historic driver of decline and underpinned the eastern population's recovery [IWC 2024; CITES 2023]. Limited, regulated aboriginal subsistence harvests are managed within IWC catch limits.

Western gray whale conservation. A multi-stakeholder advisory process convened by IUCN and involving industry, scientists, and range-state authorities has worked to reduce the impacts of offshore industrial activity on the Sakhalin feeding area, including monitoring, mitigation of seismic-survey noise, and assessment of vessel-strike risk [MMC 2023].

Population monitoring. Long-term shore-based and aerial counts, calf-production surveys, and body-condition studies track the eastern population's status and provide early warning of declines such as the recent Unusual Mortality Event [Stewart & Weller 2021; Christiansen et al. 2021]. Satellite telemetry has clarified the movements and trans-Pacific connections of the endangered western whales, informing management across national boundaries [Mate et al. 2015].

Habitat and prey research. Studies of benthic prey dynamics in the Bering and Chukchi seas help managers interpret population changes in the context of a rapidly warming Arctic and anticipate future shifts in feeding-ground productivity [Coyle et al. 2007].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Log gray whale sightings during migration and calving seasons through platforms such as iNaturalist and regional whale-monitoring networks. Verified records contribute to abundance and distribution datasets used in population assessments.

Responsible whale watching. When viewing gray whales, choose operators that follow approved viewing guidelines on approach distance and vessel speed, which reduce disturbance to migrating and calving animals.

Policy engagement. Support measures that reduce ship-strike and entanglement risk along migratory corridors, maintain protections under the International Whaling Commission and CITES, and address the climate drivers reshaping Arctic feeding grounds.

Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about gray whale biology and the contrasting status of the eastern and western populations, helping the public distinguish a genuine recovery from the ongoing vulnerability of small remnant populations.
