The grey crowned crane is among the most recognizable birds of sub-Saharan Africa, instantly identified by the spray of stiff golden filaments that fans out behind its head. It is the national bird of Uganda, appearing on that country's flag and coat of arms, yet it is also one of the fastest-declining of the world's fifteen crane species: its global population has fallen sharply since the 1980s, driven by wetland loss and the persistent illegal capture of wild birds and eggs for the pet and domestication trade [IUCN 2024; Smith et al. 2016]. This profile examines the bird's biology, the converging pressures on its survival, and the cross-border programs working to stabilize it.
Biology and Identification
The grey crowned crane is a large, long-legged bird standing roughly 1 m (about 3 ft 3 in) tall, weighing around 3.5 kg, with a wingspan near 2 m [IUCN 2024]. Adults have a predominantly slate-grey body, white-and-chestnut wing coverts, white cheek patches, and a small red gular (throat) sac that can be inflated during display. The defining feature is the golden crest of stiff, bristle-like feathers that gives the species its name. The sexes are similar in plumage, with males averaging slightly larger.
Two subspecies are generally recognized. B. r. gibbericeps, the East African grey crowned crane, ranges from the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Kenya south through Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique into eastern South Africa; B. r. regulorum, the South African grey crowned crane, occurs from Angola and Namibia south to South Africa [IUCN 2024]. The species was first described by Edward Turner Bennett in 1834.
Crowned cranes are omnivorous, foraging in grasslands and croplands for grass seeds, grain, insects, and small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, and aquatic invertebrates. Unlike the typical (Grus-type) cranes, members of the genus Balearica retain a long, functional hind toe and are among the only cranes able to perch and roost in trees [Smith et al. 2016]. Pairs are monogamous and territorial when breeding, building bulky platform nests of sedges and grasses in or beside wetlands and laying clutches of two to four eggs incubated by both parents.
Habitat and Range
The grey crowned crane occupies a mosaic of habitats across eastern and southern Africa, depending on wetlands for nesting and adjacent grasslands, savannas, and cultivated fields for foraging [IUCN 2024]. Breeding is tied closely to seasonally and permanently flooded marshes, while flocks forage widely across open landscapes outside the breeding season. This reliance on shallow wetlands embedded within agricultural and pastoral matrices makes the species especially sensitive to the drainage, conversion, and degradation of those wetlands [Wachu et al. 2026].
The species' core populations lie in East Africa — Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and the eastern DRC — with additional strongholds in Zambia and the high grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa [Smith et al. 2016; Galloway-Griesel et al. 2022]. National surveys illustrate how concentrated and countable some populations are: an aerial and ground census in Rwanda recorded a minimum of 487 birds [Becker et al. 2019], and long-term aerial monitoring in KwaZulu-Natal counted more than 3,000 grey crowned cranes in 2020 [Galloway-Griesel et al. 2022]. Species distribution modeling in Kenya indicates that much suitable habitat lies outside the protected-area network and that climate change is projected to contract suitable range by mid-century [Wachu et al. 2026].

Conservation Status
The grey crowned crane is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria A2bcd+4bcd, in the assessment published in 2024 by BirdLife International [IUCN 2024]. The species was uplisted to Vulnerable in 2012 and subsequently to Endangered as evidence of continued rapid decline accumulated. The global population is estimated at approximately 26,500–33,500 individuals and is decreasing [IUCN 2024; Smith et al. 2016]. The decline has been steep over recent decades, making this one of the most rapidly declining cranes worldwide.
The species is listed on CITES Appendix II, meaning international commercial trade is permitted only under regulated permits intended to ensure it is not detrimental to wild populations [CITES 2023]. It is also covered by the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA). Regional trends are heterogeneous: while East African populations have fallen sharply, coordinated interventions in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have been associated with increasing local counts of all three resident crane species, including the grey crowned crane [Galloway-Griesel et al. 2022].
Threats
Wetland loss and degradation are the foremost drivers of decline. Drainage and conversion of marshes for agriculture, grazing, and urban expansion remove the breeding habitat on which the species depends, while siltation, water abstraction, and pollution degrade the wetlands that remain [IUCN 2024; Wachu et al. 2026].
Illegal capture for the live-bird trade is a major and distinctive threat. Wild adults, chicks, and eggs are taken to supply demand for the species as ornamental and status-symbol birds in private collections, hotels, and homes — a domestication and pet trade that removes breeding-age birds directly from the wild [IUCN 2024]. In parts of the range, captive populations have at times rivaled or exceeded local wild numbers, underscoring the scale of removal.
Collisions with power lines cause mortality across open foraging and movement areas, a hazard documented for cranes throughout southern Africa and a focus of mitigation programs [Galloway-Griesel et al. 2022].
Poisoning and pesticide use, including deliberate and incidental poisoning in agricultural landscapes, and disturbance at nesting and roosting sites add further pressure [IUCN 2024]. Over the longer term, climate change is projected to reduce the extent of climatically suitable habitat, compounding the loss of wetlands [Wachu et al. 2026].
What Is Being Done
Range-wide strategy. A species-specific conservation strategy coordinated through the IUCN SSC Crane Specialist Group and the International Crane Foundation/Endangered Wildlife Trust (ICF/EWT) Partnership sets shared priorities across the bird's range, spanning wetland protection, trade reduction, and monitoring [Smith et al. 2016].
Tackling the illegal trade. The ICF/EWT Partnership's African Crane Trade Project works on the supply side — where birds are removed from the wild — alongside legislative and compliance efforts and demand reduction in Africa and internationally, aiming to close the pathways that move wild cranes into captivity [IUCN 2024].
Rescue and reintroduction in Rwanda. Led by the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association, an amnesty and registration campaign begun in 2014 recovered large numbers of grey crowned cranes held illegally in captivity, rehabilitating healthy birds at a site in Akagera National Park and returning them to the wild; the program has been paired with national censuses to track recovery [Becker et al. 2019; Olerou et al. 2026]. Research on reintroduced birds shows they can establish in the wild, though they exhibit reduced dispersal and smaller home ranges than wild-hatched conspecifics, informing release protocols [Olerou et al. 2026].
Mitigation and monitoring in South Africa. In KwaZulu-Natal, marking of high-risk power lines, landowner engagement, and habitat protection have accompanied a multi-decade aerial census; counts of grey crowned, blue, and wattled cranes have risen over the monitoring period, providing evidence that targeted interventions can reverse local declines [Galloway-Griesel et al. 2022].
Improved survey methods. Researchers are refining low-disturbance monitoring, including drone-based surveys with flight-height and approach guidelines designed to minimize behavioral disturbance to families and nesting birds [Demmer et al. 2024].
How Readers Can Help
Reject the captive-bird trade. Do not buy, keep, or support the keeping of grey crowned cranes or their eggs as ornamental or status-symbol animals. Demand for captive birds is a direct driver of removal from the wild [IUCN 2024].
Support wetland conservation. Back organizations and policies that protect and restore African wetlands and grasslands — the habitats the species cannot persist without [Wachu et al. 2026].
Contribute verified observations. Log sightings through platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist; vetted occurrence records support range mapping and population assessments.
Choose responsible travel and products. When visiting range countries, select operators that do not display wild-caught cranes, and support agricultural and land-use practices compatible with wetland protection.
Share accurate information. Communicate the species' Endangered status and the specific role of the illegal pet trade, countering the perception that keeping a wild crane is harmless.
