The Indian peafowl — the bird most people simply call the peacock — is among the most widely recognized animals on Earth, its iridescent train serving for more than a century as the textbook illustration of sexual selection. Formally described by Linnaeus in the founding work of zoological nomenclature [Linnaeus 1758], it is the national bird of India and a fixture of South Asian art, religion, and folklore. This profile examines the biology behind that famous display, the bird's secure conservation standing across its native range, and the more complicated story of the feral populations it has founded far beyond the Indian subcontinent [BirdLife International 2016].
Biology and Identification
The Indian peafowl is a large, ground-dwelling pheasant (family Phasianidae) with pronounced sexual dimorphism. The male, or peacock, measures roughly 100–120 cm from bill to the tip of the tail, but a fully grown train can extend the apparent length to 200–230 cm; adult males weigh approximately 4–6 kg [BirdLife International 2016]. The female, or peahen, is appreciably smaller and lacks the train, with mottled brown plumage that provides camouflage during incubation.
The train is the species' defining feature. It is formed not by the tail feathers themselves but by greatly elongated upper-tail-covert feathers, the largest of which bear the characteristic "eyespots," or ocelli. Crucially, the brilliant blues, greens, and bronzes of the plumage are almost entirely structural rather than pigment-based: the colors arise from two-dimensional photonic-crystal lattices of melanin rods within the feather barbules, which selectively reflect specific wavelengths of light [Zi et al. 2003; Freyer & Stavenga 2018]. Varying the lattice spacing across the feather produces the full palette of the eyespot from a single underlying mechanism [Zi et al. 2003].
The courtship display is multimodal. A displaying male erects and fans the train, then vibrates it to produce a rattling, broadband sound. Biomechanical analysis shows that males shake the train at frequencies close to its mechanical resonance — averaging roughly 25 Hz — which maximizes vibrational amplitude while minimizing the muscular energy required, and which holds the iridescent eyespots comparatively still against a shimmering background [Dakin et al. 2016]. Indian peafowl are omnivorous, foraging for seeds, grain, flower buds, insects, and small reptiles, and they roost in tall trees at night [BirdLife International 2016].
Habitat and Range
The Indian peafowl is native to the Indian subcontinent, occurring across most of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh [BirdLife International 2016]. It favors a mosaic of open forest, scrub, cultivated land, and the margins of human settlements, and in India it is frequently found in and around villages, temple grounds, and agricultural fields. The species is largely non-migratory and tolerant of a wide elevational range.
Beyond its native range, the peacock has established self-sustaining feral populations on several continents through deliberate introduction and escape from captivity. Birds were brought to the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i as early as 1860 and to southern California in the late nineteenth century, and feral or semi-feral populations now persist in parts of the United States — notably California, Florida, and Texas — as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and the Bahamas [BirdLife International 2016].

Conservation Status
The Indian peafowl is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in the 2016 assessment by BirdLife International (taxon ID 22679435), reflecting an extremely large range, a large population, and an overall population trend judged to be increasing [BirdLife International 2016]. It is not a threatened species.
Internationally, the species is listed on CITES Appendix III at the request of Pakistan, a listing that entered into force in 2014 and obliges signatory states to monitor and document trade in specimens originating from Pakistan [CITES 2014]. Within India the bird receives strong domestic protection: it was designated the national bird in 1963 and is listed on Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the country's highest tier of legal safeguard [Government of India 1972]. Because peafowl are abundant and adaptable, conservation attention focuses less on rescuing the species and more on managing localized conflicts and ensuring that legal protections against poaching for feathers and meat are enforced.
Threats
The Indian peafowl faces no range-wide threat sufficient to elevate its global status, but several localized pressures are documented. Habitat conversion of forest and scrub to intensive agriculture and settlement reduces suitable foraging and roosting cover in parts of the range [BirdLife International 2016]. Poaching and illegal trade in feathers, meat, and occasionally live birds persist despite legal prohibition; in India this is the principal reason the bird is held under the strictest schedule of wildlife protection [Government of India 1972].
Agricultural conflict is a growing issue where peafowl populations are dense: the birds raid crops such as paddy and groundnut, generating tension with farmers and incentives for retaliatory killing or poisoning. Pesticide exposure through contaminated grain and insect prey has been implicated in localized mortality. These pressures are regional and manageable rather than existential, which is consistent with the species' secure global assessment [BirdLife International 2016].
What Is Being Done
Legal protection and enforcement. India's listing of the peafowl on Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 makes hunting, capture, and trade in the bird and its parts a serious offense; the trade in feathers is restricted to those naturally shed [Government of India 1972]. The CITES Appendix III listing adds an international layer of trade documentation for Pakistani-origin birds [CITES 2014].
Protected areas. Dedicated reserves such as peafowl sanctuaries in India provide secure habitat and breeding grounds, and the species also benefits incidentally from the large network of national parks and sanctuaries established for other wildlife across its range.
Monitoring and research. The peacock is one of the most intensively studied birds in behavioral ecology. Long-running work on free-ranging and feral populations — from the foundational lek studies of mate choice [Petrie et al. 1991; Petrie & Halliday 1994] to later analyses questioning those findings [Takahashi et al. 2008] and physiological work linking ornament expression to health [Loyau et al. 2005] — has made the species a model system that continues to refine the theory of sexual selection. Biomechanical and optical studies of the train [Dakin et al. 2016; Zi et al. 2003; Freyer & Stavenga 2018] further document how the display actually works.
How Readers Can Help
Citizen science. Logging peafowl sightings — both native and feral — through platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist contributes verifiable occurrence data that support range mapping and the monitoring of introduced populations.
Responsible consumer choices. Avoid purchasing peacock feathers, plumes, or curios of uncertain origin; in India and several other jurisdictions, legal feather products must derive only from naturally molted feathers, and informed buyers reduce demand that can drive illegal collection [Government of India 1972].
Support for habitat and coexistence. Backing the protection of mixed forest-and-farmland landscapes, and supporting humane crop-protection and conflict-mitigation programs where peafowl damage agriculture, helps reduce the retaliatory killing that is the species' most preventable localized threat.
Education outreach. Sharing accurate, science-based information about the peacock — including the genuine scientific debate over what its famous train signals [Petrie et al. 1991; Takahashi et al. 2008] — counters myth and supports evidence-based appreciation of one of the world's most familiar wild birds.
