The Indian rhinoceros, also called the greater one-horned rhino, is the largest of the Asian rhinos and one of conservation's most documented recovery stories: from fewer than 200 animals at the start of the twentieth century to more than 4,000 today, rebuilt through strict protection and cross-border cooperation between India and Nepal [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; IRF 2024]. Yet that recovery rests on a narrow geographic base, and the species remains dependent on sustained management. This profile examines the rhino's biology, the pressures it still faces, and the programs that have driven its return.


Biology and Identification

The Indian rhinoceros is the second-largest living rhino and the largest in Asia. Adult males weigh roughly 2,070–2,200 kg and females about 1,600 kg [WWF 2024]. The species is unmistakable: a single horn of compound keratin grows up to about 57–62 cm, and the thick grey-brown hide hangs in deep folds with riveted, nodular skin that gives the animal an armour-plated appearance [WWF 2024].

It is primarily a grazer, feeding mainly on tall grasses but also taking aquatic plants, leaves, branches, fruits, and cultivated crops where habitat abuts farmland [WWF 2024]. The species is strongly associated with water and wallows frequently to thermoregulate and shed ectoparasites. Adults are largely solitary outside of mating and mother-calf bonds, and the single horn — present in both sexes — is used in foraging and intraspecific contests rather than primarily in defence [WWF 2024].

Females produce a single calf and breed slowly, with long inter-birth intervals that make population growth gradual and sensitive to adult mortality; demographic monitoring of the largest population shows steady but measured recruitment [Subedi et al. 2017].


Habitat and Range

The greater one-horned rhino inhabits the alluvial floodplain grasslands and adjacent riverine forests of the Indian subcontinent, concentrated in northern India — chiefly the state of Assam — and the Terai lowlands of southern Nepal [Ellis & Talukdar 2019]. Its global area of occupancy is small and highly fragmented, distributed across roughly a dozen protected areas, and a large majority of all individuals occur in a single national park in Assam [Ellis & Talukdar 2019].

This dependence on tall wet-grassland habitat makes the species sensitive to grassland loss, encroachment, and the spread of invasive plants that degrade forage [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; IRF 2024].

Conservation Status

The Indian rhinoceros is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(iii), reflecting a restricted and fragmented area of occupancy together with continuing decline in habitat quality [Ellis & Talukdar 2019]. Despite this listing, the overall population is increasing under strict protection and active habitat management — a rare positive trend among the world's rhinos [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; IRF 2024]. The species is included on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting commercial international trade in the animal or its parts [CITES 2023].

The most recent range-wide count places the population at approximately 4,075 individuals, with about 3,323 in India and 752 in Nepal — up from fewer than 200 a century ago [IRF 2024]. The IUCN assessment (e.T19496A18494149) was published in 2019 [Ellis & Talukdar 2019]. The combination of a recovering but geographically concentrated population is precisely what sustains the Vulnerable classification: numbers are healthy, but the species' restricted footprint leaves it exposed to localized catastrophe.


Threats

Poaching for horn remains the most acute direct threat. Rhino horn is trafficked into illegal international markets despite CITES Appendix I prohibition, and even low poaching rates can be significant for a species concentrated in so few sites [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; CITES 2023].

Habitat loss and degradation pressure the species from the other side. Conversion of floodplain grassland to agriculture and settlement, combined with the spread of invasive plants that crowd out native forage, reduces the carrying capacity of the rhino's already limited range [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; IRF 2024]. Human encroachment and resulting conflict further constrain the available habitat [Save the Rhino 2024].

Geographic concentration is itself a structural vulnerability. With most individuals in a single park, a localized event — flood, disease outbreak, or a surge in poaching — could affect a disproportionate share of the global population [Ellis & Talukdar 2019].

Climate-linked flooding in the major river systems that sustain rhino grasslands can cause direct mortality and displace animals into less secure areas during high-water periods [IRF 2024].


What Is Being Done

Protected-area enforcement. Strict anti-poaching protection in India and Nepal has been the foundation of the species' recovery, turning near-extinction in the early twentieth century into a population of several thousand [Ellis & Talukdar 2019; IRF 2024].

Transboundary cooperation. India, Nepal, and Bhutan coordinate management across the shared Terai landscape, aligning monitoring and protection on both sides of the international border to support continued growth [IRF 2024].

Range expansion and translocation. Conservation authorities have enlarged core habitat and translocated rhinos among protected areas to establish additional breeding populations and reduce the risks of geographic concentration; a major Assam national park has been substantially expanded to give the population more room to breed [IRF 2024]. In Nepal, rhinos have been moved from the largest population to establish smaller satellite populations specifically to buffer against disease and natural disasters [Subedi et al. 2017].

Population monitoring. Regular, standardized population counts — including the late-March 2025 census that produced the latest figure — track trends across both countries and provide the data base for adaptive management [IRF 2024].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Photograph and log wildlife observations through platforms such as iNaturalist when traveling in range countries. Verified records support range mapping and monitoring.

Policy engagement. Support legislation and enforcement that combats wildlife trafficking and upholds CITES Appendix I protection for rhino horn.

Informed consumer choices. Never purchase rhino horn or products claiming to contain it, and support traditional-medicine alternatives that do not rely on threatened wildlife.

Education outreach. Share accurate information about rhino conservation and the demonstrated effectiveness of protected-area enforcement, countering myths about the medicinal value of rhino horn that drive poaching demand.
