Fewer than a hundred Irrawaddy dolphins survive in the Mekong River, one of just a handful of isolated freshwater and coastal populations of a species that has more than halved in number over the past six decades [Minton et al. 2017]. Round-headed, beakless and famous for spitting jets of water while feeding, the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is among the most threatened small cetaceans in Asia. In 2017 the IUCN Red List moved the species from Vulnerable to Endangered, and it is listed as EN [Minton et al. 2017]. Several of its riverine and lagoon subpopulations are independently classified as Critically Endangered. Uniquely, in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady River the dolphins have engaged in a centuries-old cooperative fishery with people, driving fish toward cast-net fishers [Smith et al. 2009].


Biology and Identification

Orcaella brevirostris (Owen, 1866) is a member of the oceanic dolphin family Delphinidae. The genus Orcaella was long considered monotypic until morphological and genetic analysis split off the Australian snubfin dolphin (O. heinsohni) as a separate species, leaving O. brevirostris as the sole Asian representative [Beasley et al. 2005]. Despite the "dolphin" name, the species is more closely allied with the killer whale than with typical beaked dolphins.

Adults reach roughly 2.1–2.75 m in length and weigh approximately 90–200 kg, with males averaging slightly larger than females [Stacey & Arnold 1999]. The body is robust and uniformly slate-grey to bluish-grey above, paler below. The head is blunt and melon-shaped with no discernible beak, and the small, triangular dorsal fin sits about two-thirds of the way down the back — features that readily distinguish it from sympatric beaked dolphins [Stacey & Arnold 1999]. The neck is unusually flexible, allowing pronounced head movements.

Irrawaddy dolphins are generalist predators, taking fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, and are noted for expelling streams of water from the mouth, apparently to herd prey [Stacey & Arnold 1999]. They are typically found in small groups. Females produce a single calf after a gestation of roughly 14 months, with sexual maturity reached at several years of age and long inter-birth intervals [Stacey & Arnold 1999]. This slow life history — late maturity, single offspring and extended parental care — leaves populations poorly buffered against added mortality, a central concern given the localized, fragmented nature of the surviving groups [Minton et al. 2017].


Habitat and Range

The Irrawaddy dolphin occurs in coastal, estuarine and freshwater habitats across South and Southeast Asia, including the Bay of Bengal and the waters of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines [Minton et al. 2017]. Rather than forming one continuous population, the species exists as scattered coastal groups plus a small number of obligate freshwater and lagoon populations that are physically and genetically isolated from one another [Minton et al. 2017].

Three of these are large-river populations — the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) in Myanmar, the Mahakam in Indonesian Borneo, and the Mekong shared by Cambodia and Laos — while two inhabit brackish coastal water bodies: Songkhla Lake in Thailand and Malampaya Sound in the Philippines [Minton et al. 2017]. Each occupies only a short stretch of river or a single enclosed system, often a few hundred kilometres or less, which makes the populations acutely vulnerable to localized pressures [Kreb & Budiono 2005].

Historically these dolphins ranged more widely within their river systems, but their distribution has contracted toward deep-pool refuges and restricted core areas as human activity has intensified [Kreb & Budiono 2005]. The Mekong population, for example, fell from an estimated 200 animals in the late 1990s to fewer than 100 in recent years [Sonne et al. 2022]. In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, seasonal movement details, and den or nest coordinates are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The Irrawaddy dolphin is listed as EN (Endangered) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2017, having been uplisted from Vulnerable as evidence of continuing decline accumulated [Minton et al. 2017]. The global population trend is decreasing. The species is also listed on CITES Appendix I, to which it was transferred from Appendix II in 2004, prohibiting commercial international trade [CITES 2023].

Crucially, five geographically isolated subpopulations are each separately assessed as Critically Endangered: the Ayeyarwady River, the Mekong River, the Mahakam River, Songkhla Lake and Malampaya Sound [Minton et al. 2017]. These groups number in the tens to low hundreds of individuals. The Mahakam freshwater population has been estimated at only around 70 animals, with very few mature individuals, and conservation modelling shows that protecting a small number of key core areas is critical to its survival [Kreb & Budiono 2005]. The Mekong population declined from roughly 200 animals in 1997 to fewer than 100 by 2020, prompting renewed warnings that the population could be lost without sustained intervention [Sonne et al. 2022].

Because each isolated population is small and demographically independent, the loss of even a handful of breeding adults each year can drive a local extinction [Minton et al. 2017]. This combination of fragmentation, tiny population sizes and a slow reproductive rate is what places the species among the highest cetacean conservation priorities in Asia.


Threats

Primary threats to Orcaella brevirostris are well documented across its range:

  1. Entanglement in fishing gear (bycatch). Accidental capture in gillnets is the single greatest cause of mortality throughout the species' range; in several river populations it accounts for the majority of recorded deaths [Smith et al. 2009]. Because the dolphins occupy the same shallow, productive waters as fisheries, contact is frequent [Minton et al. 2017].

  2. Destructive fishing methods. Electrofishing and the use of explosives or poisons kill dolphins directly and degrade the prey base they depend on [Minton et al. 2017].

  3. Dams and flow alteration. Hydropower and barrage construction on large rivers fragment habitat, block fish migration and alter the seasonal flood pulses that structure these ecosystems, isolating dolphin groups in shrinking stretches of river [Sonne et al. 2022].

  4. Habitat degradation and pollution. Sediment from mining, agricultural and industrial runoff, and intensified land use reduce water quality and prey availability in core dolphin areas [Kreb & Budiono 2005].

  5. Vessel traffic and disturbance. Increasing boat traffic raises risks of collision and chronic disturbance in narrow river and lagoon habitats [Minton et al. 2017].

Because the surviving freshwater and lagoon populations are so small and confined, these pressures act on groups with little capacity to absorb additional loss, so even low levels of human-caused mortality can be unsustainable [Minton et al. 2017].


What Is Being Done

Targeted conservation has focused on the species' most imperilled river and lagoon populations. In Myanmar, the Ayeyarwady Dolphin Protected Area designates a managed river segment where the most damaging gear is restricted, building on long-term research into the human–dolphin cooperative cast-net fishery that links local livelihoods to dolphin survival [Smith et al. 2009]. The Wildlife Conservation Society and Myanmar's Department of Fisheries have supported monitoring and enforcement in this corridor [Smith et al. 2009].

In Cambodia, government agencies working with WWF have established river-guard patrols and a designated Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphin Management and Conservation Area in the dolphins' core range, pairing 24/7 enforcement with efforts to remove illegal gillnets [WWF 2024]. WWF reports that intensified protection has helped stabilise the Mekong population after decades of decline, though numbers remain critically low [WWF 2024].

In Indonesia, conservation planning for the Mahakam population has centred on identifying and protecting a small number of high-use core areas, an approach shown to be decisive for the survival of this critically endangered freshwater group [Kreb & Budiono 2005]. The species' CITES Appendix I listing further prohibits commercial international trade, removing live-capture trade as a legal pressure [CITES 2023]. The IUCN Red List assessment provides the scientific baseline guiding these national efforts [Minton et al. 2017].

When travelling in range countries, choosing operators that follow responsible wildlife-watching guidelines — maintaining distance and avoiding pursuit of animals — reduces disturbance to small, sensitive populations.

Consumers can favour seafood certified under credible sustainability schemes, which encourages fishing practices that lower bycatch risk for dolphins and other non-target species. Readers can also follow and engage constructively with the public consultations of fisheries and river-basin authorities in range states, where decisions about gear regulation, protected areas and dam development are made. Finally, sharing accurate, sourced information about the species helps counter misinformation. These actions are modest but cumulative, and they align individual choices with the science-based measures already underway for Orcaella brevirostris [Minton et al. 2017].
