The leopard is the most widely distributed of the large cats, ranging across more of Africa and Asia than any other felid, yet this apparent ubiquity conceals a long retreat: the species has been lost from large portions of its historic range, and many regional populations are now small and isolated [Stein et al. 2024; CatSG 2024]. This profile examines the leopard's adaptability, the pressures driving its quiet decline, and the international programs working to keep this elusive predator on the landscape.
Biology and Identification
The leopard is a powerfully built, medium-large cat with marked sexual size dimorphism. Males typically weigh 37–90 kg and females 28–60 kg, with head-body length ranging roughly 90–190 cm and a long tail of 58–110 cm [SDZWA 2023]. The coat varies from pale cream and buff-grey to tawny and deep rufous, patterned throughout with rosettes — clusters of small dark spots surrounding a slightly darker centre — which distinguish the species from the uniformly spotted cheetah and the larger-rosetted jaguar (Panthera onca).
Leopards are dietary generalists, recorded taking more than 90 prey species in sub-Saharan Africa alone, from small rodents and birds to ungulates several times their own mass [SDZWA 2023]. They are exceptional climbers, frequently caching kills in trees to avoid kleptoparasitism by lions and hyaenas. Predominantly solitary, nocturnal, and crepuscular, individuals occupy home ranges that vary widely with prey density and habitat productivity [CatSG 2024].
This behavioural and dietary flexibility allows the leopard to persist from rainforest to semi-desert and from sea level to above 5,000 m elevation — a tolerance for varied conditions unmatched among the big cats [SDZWA 2023]. Several geographically distinct subspecies are recognised across the species' range [Stein et al. 2024].
Habitat and Range
The leopard occupies an enormous but fragmented range spanning sub-Saharan and North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Caucasus, South and Southeast Asia, and the Russian Far East [Stein et al. 2024]. It is the most habitat-tolerant of the large cats, occurring in forest, woodland, savanna, grassland, montane, scrub, and arid environments. A range-wide spatial analysis estimated that leopards now occupy only 25–37% of a historic range that once spanned roughly 35 million km², with range loss of 48–67% across Africa and 83–87% across Asia outside the African subspecies [Jacobson et al. 2016]. The IUCN likewise estimates that suitable leopard range has contracted by more than 30% worldwide over roughly the last three generations (about 22 years) [Stein et al. 2024].
Leopard density tracks the biomass of its principal prey — medium-sized and large wild herbivores — so the species thrives only where wild ungulates remain abundant; across large parts of savanna Africa, prey populations are themselves collapsing under unsustainable bushmeat hunting [Hayward et al. 2006; Stein et al. 2024].
In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, den sites, corridor routes, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.
Conservation Status
The leopard is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion A2cd, reflecting an inferred population reduction driven by habitat loss, prey depletion, and exploitation [Stein et al. 2024]. The global listing masks severe regional variation: several geographically restricted Asian subspecies are assessed in higher-risk categories than the species as a whole, with the Javan and Arabian leopards classified as Critically Endangered [Stein et al. 2024]. The species is included on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting commercial international trade; a limited annual hunting-trophy export quota applies to a defined set of sub-Saharan range states [CITES 2023].
A precise global population estimate is not available because of the leopard's secretive habits and the difficulty of surveying across such a vast range; the IUCN reports a decreasing global population trend [Stein et al. 2024]. The original assessment was published in 2024 (e.T15954A274970607), with an amended version issued in 2025 [Stein et al. 2024].
Threats
Habitat loss and fragmentation are leading pressures. Conversion of forest, woodland, and savanna to agriculture and settlement reduces and isolates leopard habitat, severing connectivity between populations [Stein et al. 2024].
Prey depletion undermines the leopard even where vegetation cover persists. Because leopard density is tightly coupled to the biomass of preferred medium-sized ungulate prey, unsustainable bushmeat hunting that empties forests and savannas of ungulates erodes the species' carrying capacity and pushes individuals toward livestock [Hayward et al. 2006; Stein et al. 2024].
Human–wildlife conflict follows from prey loss and habitat encroachment. As leopards turn to domestic stock, retaliatory and pre-emptive killing rises, a dynamic that drives mortality across much of the range [Stein et al. 2024].
Illegal killing and trade persist for skins, claws, teeth, and bones, which enter both traditional-use markets and the international wildlife trade in violation of CITES Appendix I protections [CITES 2023; Stein et al. 2024].
What Is Being Done
Specialist coordination. The IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group maintains range-wide status assessments and conservation guidance for the leopard, providing the technical foundation for national action planning across Africa and Asia [CatSG 2024].
International trade controls. The leopard's CITES Appendix I listing prohibits commercial trade and caps hunting-trophy exports through country-specific quotas, giving range states a legal framework to regulate offtake and combat trafficking [CITES 2023].
Conflict mitigation and protected areas. Across the range, conservation organisations and national wildlife authorities operate livestock-protection schemes, predator-deterrent husbandry, and managed protected-area networks intended to reduce retaliatory killing and conserve prey populations [Stein et al. 2024].
Population recovery for at-risk lineages. For the most threatened subspecies — including the Arabian and Javan leopards — targeted national recovery efforts combine protected-area enforcement, prey restoration, and, where appropriate, conservation breeding to safeguard small remnant populations [Stein et al. 2024].

Citizen science. Photograph and log wildlife observations through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified records contribute to range mapping and IUCN assessments.
Policy engagement. Support legislation and enforcement that protects forests and savannas, strengthens action against wildlife trafficking, and upholds CITES Appendix I commitments.
Informed consumer choices. Avoid products made from leopard skin, claws, teeth, or bone, and support traditional-medicine alternatives that do not rely on threatened wildlife.
Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about the ecological role of large predators. Misperceptions about livestock-predation risk are a documented contributor to retaliatory killing of leopards [Stein et al. 2024].
