The loggerhead sea turtle is a large, hard-shelled marine reptile named for its powerful head and crushing jaws, a wide-ranging species whose life history spans oceans and decades. Long-lived, slow to mature, and dependent on both pelagic foraging grounds and a small number of major nesting regions, the loggerhead is acutely sensitive to fisheries bycatch and to changes on land and sea [Casale & Tucker 2017; NOAA 2024e]. This profile examines loggerhead biology, the threats it faces, and the conservation programs supporting its recovery.


Biology and Identification

The loggerhead is distinguished by its disproportionately large head and robust jaws, an adaptation for crushing hard-shelled prey. Adults typically measure about 0.8–1.1 m (2.5–3.5 ft) in carapace length and weigh roughly 90–160 kg (200–350 lb), with a reddish-brown carapace [NOAA 2024e]. The species is carnivorous, feeding on hard-bodied invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, horseshoe crabs, whelks, and conchs, which its strong jaws are well suited to crush [NOAA 2024e].

Loggerheads are long-lived and late-maturing. Lifespan is estimated at 70 years or more, and females are thought to reach maturity at around 35 years of age [NOAA 2024e]. As in other sea turtles, sex is determined by incubation temperature: cooler sands tend to produce males and warmer sands females, a mechanism that makes hatchling sex ratios sensitive to environmental temperature [NOAA 2024e]. After hatching, juveniles disperse into oceanic currents and spend years in the open sea before recruiting to coastal foraging habitats as they grow.


Habitat and Range

Loggerheads occur worldwide in subtropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean Sea, ranging in the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Argentina and in the eastern Pacific from Alaska to Chile [NOAA 2024e]. The species uses open-ocean habitat as juveniles and shifts to coastal and continental-shelf waters as adults, returning to nesting regions to breed. Only a small number of nesting aggregations worldwide are very large; globally, just two regularly exceed 10,000 nesting females per year [NOAA 2024e].

In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, nesting beaches, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The loggerhead sea turtle is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List at the global level (assessment e.T3897A119333622, the amended 2017 version of the 2015 assessment), under criteria reflecting population decline [Casale & Tucker 2017]. The species is included on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting commercial international trade in the species and its parts [CITES 2023].

The global assessment masks substantial regional variation. The IUCN evaluated ten loggerhead subpopulations separately, assigning them categories ranging from Critically Endangered to Least Concern [Casale & Tucker 2017]. Under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, the loggerhead is divided into nine distinct population segments: five are listed as endangered and four as threatened, including the Northwest Atlantic Ocean segment that hosts the large nesting aggregations of the southeastern United States [NOAA 2024e]. The U.S. nesting total exceeds 100,000 nests in many years, concentrated in the Northwest Atlantic [NOAA 2024e].


Threats

Fisheries bycatch is the primary threat to loggerheads worldwide. Turtles are incidentally captured and drowned or injured in trawls, gillnets, and longlines across their range, and bycatch has been documented as a major source of mortality for marine turtle populations globally [Casale & Tucker 2017; Wallace et al. 2010; NOAA 2024e].

Coastal development and artificial lighting. Construction and armoring degrade nesting habitat, while artificial beachfront lighting disorients emerging hatchlings, drawing them away from the sea and reducing survival [NOAA 2024e].

Vessel strikes and marine pollution. Boat strikes are a notable hazard near developed coastlines, and ingestion of plastic and other marine debris poses an additional, widespread risk [NOAA 2024e].

Climate change. Rising sand temperatures skew hatchling sex ratios toward females and can reduce egg survival, while sea-level rise and increased storm activity erode and inundate nests [NOAA 2024e]. The species' late maturity means recovery from elevated mortality is inherently slow [Casale & Tucker 2017].


What Is Being Done

Bycatch reduction. Turtle excluder devices in trawl fisheries and modified gear and practices in gillnet and longline fisheries reduce incidental capture and mortality, and are required in a number of fisheries managed by U.S. and other authorities [NOAA 2024e].

Nesting-habitat protection. Protection of nesting regions, lighting ordinances to reduce hatchling disorientation, and nest monitoring and management support reproductive success [NOAA 2024e].

International trade prohibition and agreements. The CITES Appendix I listing bans commercial international trade, and the loggerhead is covered by regional instruments such as the SPAW Protocol in the Wider Caribbean [CITES 2023; NOAA 2024e].

Assessment and recovery planning. The IUCN's subpopulation-level assessment and the U.S. distinct-population-segment framework allow conservation effort to be directed where it is most needed; a formal recovery plan for the Northwest Atlantic population defines recovery units and criteria, and long-term nest monitoring tracks trends over time [Casale & Tucker 2017; NMFS & USFWS 2009; NOAA 2024e]. In the Mediterranean, sustained nest protection has been credited with measurable improvement in regional status [MTSG 2015].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Report sea turtle sightings, strandings, and nesting activity to recognized monitoring networks. Verified records support the datasets used in subpopulation assessments.

Reduce coastal lighting impacts. In nesting regions, support and follow lighting guidelines that keep beaches dark during nesting and hatching seasons to prevent hatchling disorientation [NOAA 2024e].

Choose responsible seafood and reduce plastic. Favour seafood from fisheries that use turtle-safe gear, and reduce single-use plastics that contribute to the marine debris turtles ingest [NOAA 2024e].

Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about sea turtle life history and the long timescales over which recovery occurs, supporting sustained protection [Casale & Tucker 2017].
