The long-tailed chinchilla is one of the most catastrophic conservation stories in mammalian history: a rodent prized for the softest fur of any land mammal—with more than 50 hairs sprouting from a single follicle—was hunted so relentlessly that more than 21 million pelts were exported from Chile in the first decades of the twentieth century, leaving the species presumed extinct in the wild for years [Jiménez 1996]. Today only a few small, fragmented colonies survive in the semi-arid mountains of north-central Chile, and the species is listed as CR by the IUCN under its Chinchilla assessment history, with the current published evaluation estimating roughly 5,350 mature individuals across a tiny remnant range [Roach & Kennerley 2016]. Once thought lost, the long-tailed chinchilla now persists as a fragile emblem of recovery and risk.


Biology and Identification

Chinchilla lanigera (Molina, 1782) is a medium-sized hystricomorph rodent in the family Chinchillidae, order Rodentia, and one of two living species in the genus Chinchilla alongside the short-tailed chinchilla, C. chinchilla [Spotorno et al. 2004]. Adults have a head-and-body length of roughly 225–380 mm and a comparatively long, well-furred tail of about 75–150 mm—the feature that distinguishes it from its short-tailed congener [Animal Diversity Web 2014]. Females are the larger and socially dominant sex, reaching up to about 800 g, while males average near 500 g [Animal Diversity Web 2014].

The pelage is extraordinarily dense, producing the bluish-grey, black-tipped coat that drove the fur trade; the underparts are paler and yellowish-white [Spotorno et al. 2004]. Large rounded ears, prominent dark eyes with vertically slit pupils, and robust hind limbs adapted for leaping among rocks are characteristic [Animal Diversity Web 2014].

Chinchillas are largely crepuscular to nocturnal, colonial animals that shelter in rock crevices and burrows [Spotorno et al. 2004]. Their diet is dominated by herbaceous and woody vegetation, including grasses such as perennial graminoids, with seeds and other plant material taken seasonally [Spotorno et al. 2004]. Reproduction is relatively slow for a rodent: gestation lasts roughly 105–115 days and litters typically comprise two to three precocial young, with up to two litters per year [Animal Diversity Web 2014]. This combination of low reproductive output and extreme habitat specialization leaves wild populations slow to recover from losses [Jiménez 1996].


Habitat and Range

The long-tailed chinchilla is endemic to Chile, where it occupies the arid and rugged transverse mountain ranges of the north-central part of the country, broadly within the Coquimbo Region and adjacent areas [Valladares et al. 2014]. Typical habitat is rocky or sandy terrain with sparse cover of thorn shrubs, scattered cacti, and patches of succulent bromeliads, generally at elevations from roughly 400 to 1,650 m where transverse ridges connect the coastal cordillera to the Andes [Spotorno et al. 2004].

The historical range was far broader. Intensive commercial hunting through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries collapsed the distribution to a handful of isolated remnants, and for a period the wild species was feared extinct until surviving colonies were confirmed in the 1970s [Jiménez 1996]. Subsequent fieldwork, including more recent camera-trap and live-trapping surveys, has refined the known distribution and located additional small colonies, but the species remains restricted to a severely fragmented archipelago of habitat patches with an estimated area of occupancy on the order of tens of square kilometres [Valladares et al. 2014; Roach & Kennerley 2016]. Much of this surviving range lies on private, unprotected land, with the principal protected stronghold concentrated in a single national reserve [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

Conservation Status

The long-tailed chinchilla is listed as CR in the IUCN Chinchilla assessment record; in the 2008 Red List evaluation it was assessed as Critically Endangered, reflecting an inferred population decline exceeding 90% over three generations driven by hunting and habitat loss [Roach & Kennerley 2016]. The most recent published assessment estimates approximately 5,350 mature individuals, distributed among a few small, isolated colonies, and documents a continuing decline attributed to ongoing habitat degradation [Roach & Kennerley 2016]. The wild population is considered severely fragmented, with a very small area of occupancy that places the species at high extinction risk under area- and decline-based criteria [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

The species has additional international protection: Chinchilla lanigera is listed on CITES Appendix I, the strictest category, which prohibits commercial international trade in wild-sourced specimens (domesticated forms are treated separately) [CITES 2024]. Within Chile, the chinchilla has been legally protected from hunting since 1929 [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

Regional population structure is a central conservation concern. Surviving colonies behave as a fragile metapopulation in which small, isolated groups are vulnerable to local extinction and limited by reduced connectivity, so the loss of any single colony represents a disproportionate loss of the global wild population [Valladares et al. 2014; Jiménez 1996].


Threats

  1. Historical and residual hunting pressure. Commercial exploitation for the fur trade was the original driver of collapse, with tens of millions of pelts exported during the early twentieth century; although protected, residual illegal take and the legacy of past overharvest still constrain recovery [Jiménez 1996].

  2. Habitat destruction and degradation. Livestock grazing, firewood extraction, and conversion of shrubland reduce and fragment the sparse vegetation chinchillas depend on for food and cover [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

  3. Mining and infrastructure. Mineral extraction and associated development near remaining colonies threaten habitat integrity and connectivity in the species' restricted range [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

  4. Small, fragmented populations. With colonies isolated and few in number, the species is exposed to demographic and genetic risks typical of very small populations, including reduced resilience to stochastic events [Valladares et al. 2014].

  5. Introduced and competing herbivores. Grazing by domestic and feral animals such as goats degrades the limited forage base and can suppress the recovery of native vegetation in occupied habitat [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

These categories describe mechanisms of decline at a population and habitat level; this article does not provide any operational detail that could facilitate harm.


What Is Being Done

The cornerstone of in-situ protection is the Reserva Nacional Las Chinchillas, established in 1983 in the Aucó sector of the Coquimbo Region and administered by Chile's Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF). It remains the only formally protected site dedicated to safeguarding wild Chinchilla lanigera colonies [CONAF 2023]. Its creation followed national legal protection of the species in 1929 and the rediscovery of surviving wild colonies in the 1970s [Roach & Kennerley 2016; CONAF 2023].

International trade controls reinforce these national measures: the species' inclusion on CITES Appendix I prohibits commercial trade in wild specimens across borders [CITES 2024]. Recommended and ongoing conservation actions identified in the scientific assessment include expanding protected land, restoring degraded habitat, managing grazing pressure, and supporting local communities through education and alternative livelihoods to reduce land-use conflict [Roach & Kennerley 2016].

Field research and monitoring have also advanced understanding of the surviving metapopulation, including surveys that have located previously undocumented colonies and clarified the species' fragmented distribution [Valladares et al. 2014]. Non-governmental and zoo-based initiatives—such as habitat-restoration and education projects in the Chilean range—have contributed to outreach and applied conservation work supporting the reserve and adjacent communities [Save the Wild Chinchillas 2024].
