The Malayan tapir is the largest of the world's living tapirs and the only species native to Asia, a striking black-and-white forest herbivore that plays a central role as a seed disperser in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Habitat loss and fragmentation have reduced its range and numbers across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar, leaving a population now estimated at fewer than 2,500 mature individuals [Traeholt et al. 2016]. This profile examines the species' biology, the pressures it faces, and the conservation programs working to secure its future.
Biology and Identification
The Malayan tapir is unmistakable among large mammals. Adults typically weigh 250–320 kg and measure roughly 1.8–2.5 m in body length, making it the largest of the five tapir species [Williams 1979; Traeholt et al. 2016]. Its coloration is its most recognizable feature: the front of the body and the legs are black, while a broad white "saddle" wraps the rear of the body. In the dappled light of the forest understory this two-tone pattern breaks up the animal's outline, helping it avoid detection.
Calves are born with a strikingly different coat — dark brown marked with horizontal stripes and rows of spots that provide camouflage on the forest floor; this juvenile pattern fades to the adult black-and-white over the first several months of life [Williams 1979]. Like all tapirs, the species has a short, flexible proboscis formed from the upper lip and nose, used to grasp leaves, shoots, and fruit.
Malayan tapirs are predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular, solitary, and strongly associated with water and dense vegetation [Traeholt et al. 2016]. As large-bodied browsers and frugivores they consume and disperse the seeds of many rainforest plants, making them important agents of forest regeneration.
Habitat and Range
The Malayan tapir inhabits tropical moist forest in Peninsular Malaysia, the island of Sumatra (Indonesia), southern and western Thailand, and parts of Myanmar [Traeholt et al. 2016]. It favors primary and mature secondary lowland and hill forest but also uses regenerating and selectively logged forest where cover and food remain available.
Across this range the species' distribution has become increasingly fragmented as continuous forest has been cleared and divided. The IUCN assessment places national populations at roughly 1,100–1,500 individuals in Malaysia, 400–500 in Indonesia, and 532–720 in Thailand, with the species considered to comprise fewer than 2,500 mature individuals in total [Traeholt et al. 2016].

Conservation Status
The Malayan tapir is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List under criteria A2cde+3cde+4cde, reflecting an observed and projected population decline driven primarily by habitat loss and fragmentation [Traeholt et al. 2016]. The species is included on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting commercial international trade [CITES 2023].
The global population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 mature individuals, and the population trend is assessed as decreasing [Traeholt et al. 2016]. The assessment identifies forest conversion for agriculture and settlement as the dominant driver, compounded by accidental capture in snares set for other wildlife and by road mortality. In Malaysia, where the largest national population persists, the species receives full legal protection under national wildlife legislation [Traeholt et al. 2016].
Threats
Habitat loss and fragmentation are the principal threats. Conversion of lowland rainforest to oil palm and other agriculture, together with logging and infrastructure development, has reduced and divided tapir habitat across the range [Traeholt et al. 2016].
Snaring and incidental capture. Although tapirs are not typically the intended target, they are caught in wire snares set for other species, a pervasive problem in the forests of Southeast Asia [Traeholt et al. 2016].
Road mortality and human conflict. As forest is fragmented by roads, tapirs are increasingly struck by vehicles, and displaced individuals may enter plantations and settlements, raising the risk of collision and retaliation [Magintan et al. 2017].
Small, isolated populations. Fragmentation leaves many subpopulations small and disconnected, reducing genetic exchange and increasing vulnerability to local loss — a concern reinforced by genetic studies of the Malay Peninsula populations [Rahman et al. 2021].
What Is Being Done
Specialist group coordination. The IUCN SSC Tapir Specialist Group coordinates research, status assessment, and conservation planning for the Malayan tapir across all four range states, providing the scientific basis for national action [TSG 2024].
National protection and conflict response. In Peninsular Malaysia, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) responds to displaced tapirs by translocating individuals back to suitable forest, and has worked to replant preferred food plants within wildlife reserves to reduce displacement [Magintan et al. 2017].
Landscape connectivity. The Central Forest Spine initiative, a federal plan to reconnect Peninsular Malaysia's major forest complexes through ecological corridors, is intended to maintain connectivity for wide-ranging mammals; camera-trap records confirm tapirs using corridors assessed under the plan [Magintan et al. 2017].
Infrastructure mitigation. Wildlife viaducts and underpasses along roads through forested areas are designed to reduce vehicle collisions and have been used by tapirs and other large mammals [Magintan et al. 2017].

Citizen science. Photograph and log wildlife observations through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified occurrence records contribute directly to range-mapping efforts and IUCN assessments.
Policy engagement. Support protection of remaining lowland rainforest, funding for wildlife corridors and crossing structures, and enforcement against snaring and the illegal wildlife trade in tapir range countries.
Informed consumer choices. Choose products made with certified deforestation-free palm oil and timber, reducing pressure on the lowland forests Malayan tapirs require.
Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about the tapir's role as a seed disperser and the specific threats — habitat loss, snares, and roads — that most affect the species.
