The mandrill is the largest monkey on Earth and one of the most vividly colored mammals in the world, instantly recognizable by the crimson-and-blue ridged face of adult males. A forest-floor forager of west-central Africa, it lives in the largest stable aggregations documented for any non-human primate — hordes that can exceed eight hundred individuals — and plays an outsized role as a seed disperser across the rainforests it inhabits. Its populations are declining under sustained hunting pressure and habitat loss, and the species is classified as at risk across most of its range [Abernethy & Maisels 2019]. This profile examines what makes the mandrill ecologically significant, the pressures it faces, and the conservation work underway to secure its future.
Biology and Identification
The mandrill is a large, semi-terrestrial Old World monkey in the genus Mandrillus, more closely related to the white-eyelid mangabeys (Cercocebus) than to the true baboons with which it is often confused [Dixson 2015]. The species shows pronounced sexual dimorphism: adult males measure roughly 70–95 cm in head-body length and typically weigh 19–30 kg, while females are markedly smaller at about 55–70 cm and 10–15 kg [Kingdon 2015]. This makes adult males two to three times heavier than females and ranks the mandrill as the heaviest of all monkeys.
The species is most famous for its coloration. Dominant males develop a scarlet stripe down the muzzle flanked by ridged blue skin, with similarly bright hues on the rump. The red derives from blood vessels near the skin surface and the blue from structural coloration produced by aligned collagen fibers [Prum & Torres 2004]. These ornaments are not fixed: when a male attains alpha status he develops larger testes, redder facial and genital skin, and increased secretion from the sternal scent gland, and these traits partially reverse when he loses rank [Setchell & Dixson 2001]. Coloration thus functions as an honest signal of social status and condition.
Mandrills are predominantly frugivorous. In Lopé National Park, Gabon, fruit and seeds dominate the diet, supplemented by leaves, pith, flowers, fungi, and animal matter [Hongo et al. 2018]. Their powerful jaws allow them to crack hard-shelled seeds that defeat other primates, and their large home ranges and bulk consumption of fruit make them important seed dispersers in Central African forests [Tutin et al. 1997]. Diet shifts seasonally, with animals relying on woody tissue and greater dietary breadth during fruit-scarce months [Hongo et al. 2018].
Habitat and Range
The mandrill occupies tropical rainforest and forest-savanna mosaic in west-central Africa, ranging across southern Cameroon, mainland Equatorial Guinea (Río Muni), Gabon, and parts of the Republic of the Congo [Dixson 2015]. Gabon holds the core of the global population. The species generally favors primary forest but also uses gallery forest and patchy forested habitat within savanna [Abernethy & Maisels 2019].
Mandrills are best known for their extraordinary social organization. Long-term study in Lopé recorded hordes averaging around 620 individuals and reaching as many as 845 — probably the largest cohesive groups found in any wild, unprovisioned primate population [Abernethy et al. 2002]. These hordes range over very large areas of forest, with documented home ranges spanning many tens of square kilometers [White et al. 2010].

Conservation Status
The mandrill is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, a status reflecting widespread hunting combined with habitat degradation across most of its range [Abernethy & Maisels 2019]. The assessment notes that the total population, although unquantified, is suspected to have declined by more than 30% over roughly 24 years, and the population trend is decreasing [Abernethy & Maisels 2019].
The mandrill is listed on CITES Appendix I, which prohibits commercial international trade in wild-caught specimens [CITES 2023]. It also receives regional legal protection across its range states. Despite these protections, enforcement gaps and the scale of the regional bushmeat economy continue to undermine the species' security in the wild [Abernethy et al. 2013].
Threats
Hunting for bushmeat is the foremost threat. Across Central African rainforests, commercial and subsistence hunting has intensified with growing urban demand for wild meat and the expansion of logging roads that open previously remote forest to hunters [Abernethy et al. 2013]. The mandrill's habit of moving in large, noisy, ground-dwelling hordes makes it especially exposed to hunters, who can take many animals in a single encounter.
Habitat loss and fragmentation compound this pressure. Conversion of forest for agriculture, timber extraction, and infrastructure reduces and fragments the primary forest the species depends on, lowering carrying capacity and isolating populations [Abernethy & Maisels 2019]. Logging infrastructure also amplifies hunting access, linking the two threats.
Slow life history limits the species' capacity to recover. Mandrills reproduce slowly, with females typically producing a single offspring at multi-year intervals, so populations rebound only gradually once depleted [Dixson 2015]. Combined with sustained offtake, this makes even moderate hunting pressure difficult to absorb over the long term.
What Is Being Done
Coordinated regional planning. The IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group published the Cercocebus and Mandrillus Conservation Action Plan 2024–2028, which sets out taxon-specific actions for the mandrill and its relatives under themes including reducing knowledge gaps, strengthening habitat protection, supporting local livelihoods, and raising the profile of these little-studied primates [Dempsey et al. 2024].
Protected areas and long-term research. Gabon's network of national parks — including Lopé, where decades of mandrill research have been conducted — provides habitat protection and a scientific foundation for management [Abernethy et al. 2002]. Ongoing field studies of diet, ranging, and population structure continue to refine understanding of the species' needs [Hongo et al. 2018; White et al. 2010].
Trade regulation. The species' CITES Appendix I listing provides the legal framework to restrict international trade, while national protections in range states support enforcement against illegal hunting and trafficking [CITES 2023].
How Readers Can Help
Citizen science. Log wildlife observations through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified records contribute to range mapping and to the data underpinning IUCN assessments.
Support credible conservation organizations. Field research stations, protected-area programs, and primate specialist networks in Central Africa rely on sustained funding to monitor populations and work with local communities. Directing support to established, transparent organizations strengthens this work.
Informed consumer choices. Avoid products derived from wild primates or other protected wildlife, and choose responsible tour operators when traveling in range countries.
Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about the mandrill's ecological role as a seed disperser and about the realities of the bushmeat trade with schools, community groups, and social networks.
