The Philippine tarsier is one of the world's smallest primates — a nocturnal, insect-hunting specialist whose enormous eyes and near-half-circle head rotation have made it both a national icon and a magnet for unregulated wildlife tourism. Endemic to the Greater Mindanao faunal region of the southern Philippines, it occupies a patchy, fragmenting range and has undergone an inferred decline driven by habitat loss, the pet trade, and handling stress at roadside attractions [Shekelle 2020; Gursky et al. 2011]. This profile examines its biology, the pressures it faces, and the measures intended to keep wild populations intact.


Biology and Identification

The Philippine tarsier is a tiny arboreal primate. Head-and-body length spans roughly 85–160 mm, adults weigh about 80–160 g — small enough to rest in a cupped hand — and the naked, tufted tail is about twice the body length [Shekelle 2020]. The most conspicuous feature is the eyes: each fixed eyeball is enormous relative to body size, an adaptation to nocturnal hunting. Because the eyes cannot rotate in their sockets, the tarsier compensates with exceptional neck mobility, turning its head far to either side to scan its surroundings.

The species is a vertical clinger and leaper. Elongated tarsal (ankle) bones — the source of the common name — act as a lever for powerful jumps between vertical stems, letting the animal cover several times its body length in a single bound. Tarsiers are among the most strictly faunivorous of all primates, taking live insects such as crickets, grasshoppers, beetles and moths, with occasional small vertebrates [Bejar et al. 2024]. They are solitary to loosely social, nocturnal, and communicate through vocalizations that include calls at ultrasonic frequencies.

The Philippine tarsier was historically placed in the genus Tarsius as Tarsius syrichta. A 2010 revision separated the lineage into its own genus, Carlito — named for the Filipino conservationist Carlito Pizarras — recognizing the biogeographic and morphological distinctiveness of the Philippine form relative to the Sulawesian and Sundaland tarsiers; three subspecies are commonly recognized across separate islands [Groves & Shekelle 2010].


Habitat and Range

The Philippine tarsier is endemic to the Greater Mindanao region of the southern Philippines, occurring on islands including Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Mindanao, and several smaller adjacent islands [Shekelle 2020]. It uses both primary and secondary forest, including disturbed and regenerating habitats and forest fragments, generally favoring dense, low vegetation with abundant vertical perches for clinging and leaping [Bejar et al. 2020].

Field studies report small individual ranging areas. A radio-tracking study in Corella, Bohol, found home ranges averaging roughly 6.45 ha for males and 2.45 ha for females, with larger male ranges overlapping those of several females [Neri-Arboleda et al. 2002]. Work on a Mindanao forest fragment confirmed that tarsiers can persist in remnant patches of only a few dozen hectares, underscoring both their tolerance of disturbance and their vulnerability when patches are lost [Bejar et al. 2020].

In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific roost-tree and sleeping-site locations, fine-scale population coordinates, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The Philippine tarsier is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2020 (taxon ID 21492; assessment e.T21492A17978520) [Shekelle 2020]. The species is included on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international commercial trade [CITES 2023]. In the United States, it is listed under the Endangered Species Act and tracked in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service species database [USFWS 2024].

The classification reflects an inferred population decline tied to habitat loss across a fragmented range, rather than a precise global census [Shekelle 2020]. Local studies illustrate the uncertainty: a quadrat-based survey in the Corella sanctuary on Bohol estimated about 1.55 tarsiers per hectare and up to roughly 258 individuals within the protected area [Gursky et al. 2011]. Researchers have also documented sharp local declines — densities measured before and after Typhoon Haiyan struck Bohol in 2013 fell substantially, showing how a single catastrophic event can reduce an already fragmented population [Gursky et al. 2017].


Threats

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the principal long-term pressures. Conversion of forest to agriculture and settlement, together with logging, has reduced and fragmented the lowland and secondary forests the species depends on, isolating populations in small patches [Bejar et al. 2020; Shekelle 2020].

Collection for the pet trade and tourism display removes animals directly from the wild. Tarsiers are taken to be sold as pets or kept for tourist viewing, yet fare extremely poorly outside their habitat: their specialized live-insect diet and acute sensitivity to disturbance make captive survival difficult. Social-media analysis has documented continued circulation of images depicting handling and private keeping, which can normalize and sustain demand [Tabeta & Bejar 2025].

Handling and visitor stress at tourist sites is a distinct welfare concern. Bright light, noise, crowding, and physical contact are stressful for this nocturnal, easily disturbed animal, and poorly managed attractions that permit handling and flash photography expose individuals to chronic stress. Well-run sanctuaries respond by keeping tarsiers in protected forest, prohibiting handling and flash, and controlling visitor numbers.

Natural catastrophes compound these pressures: because populations are small and fragmented, events such as severe typhoons can cause steep local declines with slow recovery [Gursky et al. 2017].


What Is Being Done

Protected sanctuaries and habitat management. The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol, managed with national environmental authorities, maintains protected forest where tarsiers live free-ranging rather than caged and where visitor access is regulated to minimize disturbance [Gursky et al. 2011], combining habitat protection with controlled, no-handling viewing.

Legal protection. The species is protected under Philippine wildlife law and regulated internationally under CITES Appendix II, which constrains cross-border commercial trade [CITES 2023]; its U.S. Endangered Species Act listing adds a further layer of trade and import regulation [USFWS 2024].

Field research and monitoring. Studies of ranging behavior, sleeping-site selection, social organization, and forest-fragment use are building the ecological baseline for evidence-based management, especially on Mindanao where data have been sparse [Neri-Arboleda et al. 2002; Bejar et al. 2020; Bejar et al. 2024]. Population surveys and post-disturbance comparisons help quantify trends [Gursky et al. 2011; Gursky et al. 2017]. Analyses of how the species is portrayed online inform efforts to discourage the pet trade and handling-based tourism [Tabeta & Bejar 2025].


How Readers Can Help

Choose responsible wildlife viewing. Select sanctuaries that keep tarsiers in protected forest, prohibit handling and flash photography, and limit visitor numbers; avoid roadside attractions that allow holding or posing with the animals.

Do not buy or share content that fuels demand. Never acquire a tarsier as a pet, and avoid amplifying social-media posts depicting handling or private keeping, which research links to sustained collection pressure [Tabeta & Bejar 2025].

Support habitat protection and citizen science. Back organizations conserving native forest in the Greater Mindanao region, since habitat loss is the principal long-term threat [Shekelle 2020]. Log verified observations through platforms such as iNaturalist, and share accurate, science-based information about the species' sensitivity and ecological role.
