The plains zebra is the most abundant and widespread of the world's three living zebra species, ranging across the grasslands and savannas of eastern and southern Africa. Its bold black-and-white striping is among the most recognizable patterns in the animal kingdom, and decades of research now point to a surprisingly practical explanation for it. Yet abundance is not the same as security: range-wide numbers have fallen in recent decades, and one of its own subspecies — the quagga — was hunted to extinction in the nineteenth century. This profile examines the plains zebra's biology, conservation standing, threats, and the work underway to keep this iconic grazer common.


Biology and Identification

The plains zebra (Equus quagga) is a member of the horse family, Equidae. Adults stand roughly 1.1–1.5 m at the shoulder and weigh in the region of 175–385 kg, with stallions slightly larger than mares. The defining feature is the striping: broad vertical black-and-white stripes on the head and body that curve to become horizontal on the hindquarters, with patterns that are individually unique. Many populations, particularly toward the south of the range, also show faint brownish "shadow stripes" between the black bands.

The long-debated function of these stripes has recently attracted strong experimental support for one hypothesis in particular: deterrence of biting flies. A continental comparative analysis found that striping in equids is most closely associated with the distribution and annoyance of tabanid (horse) flies and tsetse flies, rather than with camouflage, predator confusion, thermoregulation, or social signaling [Caro et al. 2014]. Field experiments showed that biting flies approach striped and unstriped animals at similar rates but fail to land successfully on stripes — decelerating poorly and bumping into or veering away from the coat [Caro et al. 2019]. The effect is robust enough that domestic cattle painted with zebra-like stripes received substantially fewer fly landings and bites [Kojima et al. 2019]. A competing line of work argues that the degree of striping correlates with temperature and may aid heat regulation [Larison et al. 2015], though the comparative evidence weighs more heavily toward the anti-fly explanation.

Socially, plains zebra live in stable family groups, or harems, typically composed of one stallion, several mares, and their offspring; surplus males form bachelor groups. Harems aggregate into larger, fluid herds, and movement decisions within a herd are influenced by social relationships and reproductive state, with lactating mares often initiating movement [Fischhoff et al. 2007]. As bulk grazers of coarse grasses, zebras crop tall, fibrous growth and prepare grazing lawns used by more selective herbivores.


Habitat and Range

Plains zebra occupy grasslands, savanna woodlands, and open scrub across eastern and southern Africa, from parts of the Horn of Africa southward through the savanna belt to South Africa. The species is water-dependent and is generally found within commuting distance of surface water, which shapes its seasonal movements between wet- and dry-season ranges.

The plains zebra is also a long-distance migrant. GPS-collar tracking documented a round-trip movement of roughly 500 km between floodplains in the Chobe River region of Namibia and seasonal pans in Botswana — the longest-known terrestrial migration in Africa [Naidoo et al. 2014]. Such migrations depend on intact, unobstructed corridors, making the species sensitive to fencing and land-use change.

Conservation Status

The plains zebra is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment published in 2016 [King & Moehlman 2016]. The global population is estimated at over 500,000 animals, but the overall trend is decreasing: the assessment documented a population reduction of roughly 24% over the period from around 2002 to 2016, with declines recorded in a majority of the 17 range states for which data were available [King & Moehlman 2016]. The species had previously been listed as Least Concern; the move reflected growing evidence of range-wide decline rather than imminent collapse.

In contrast to its two relatives, the plains zebra is not listed on any CITES Appendix. This distinguishes it from Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi), which is on CITES Appendix I, and the mountain zebra (Equus zebra), which is on CITES Appendix II [CITES 2023]. The plains zebra's relative abundance and wide distribution are the reasons international trade controls have not been considered necessary at the species level.

The species' history carries a stark warning. The quagga (Equus quagga quagga), a distinctively patterned southern subspecies, was hunted to extinction in the wild during the nineteenth century, with the last captive individual dying in Amsterdam in 1883. Ancient-DNA analysis confirmed that the quagga was not a separate species but a recently diverged subspecies of the plains zebra, having split from other populations only some 120,000–290,000 years ago [Leonard et al. 2005].


Threats

The principal threats to plains zebra are habitat loss and conversion of grassland and savanna to agriculture and settlement, which reduce and fragment range. The fencing and infrastructure that accompany land-use change are particularly damaging because they sever the long migration and seasonal-movement corridors the species depends on [Naidoo et al. 2014].

Hunting — for meat and for skins — is a significant and locally intensive pressure, especially where law enforcement is limited and zebra populations occur outside protected areas [King & Moehlman 2016]. Competition with livestock for grazing and water, and periodic drought, add further stress, and small or isolated subpopulations are the most exposed. Civil instability in parts of the range has historically driven sharp local declines.


What Is Being Done

A large share of the plains zebra population persists inside national parks, conservancies, and game reserves, and well-managed protected areas remain the backbone of the species' conservation. Transboundary conservation initiatives in southern Africa — large multi-country landscapes that keep migration corridors open across international borders — are directly relevant to migratory populations whose movements cross national boundaries [Naidoo et al. 2014].

Scientific monitoring continues to refine our understanding of zebra ecology, from aerial and ground censuses that track population trends to GPS-collar studies that map movement and identify corridors most in need of protection. The clarification of stripe function through controlled experiments [Caro et al. 2014; Caro et al. 2019; Kojima et al. 2019] is more than academic: zebra-pattern fly deterrence is now being explored as a low-cost way to reduce biting-fly burden on livestock.
