The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere and the sole living member of the family Antilocapridae, an endemic North American lineage with no close relatives anywhere else on Earth [O'Gara 1978; IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group 2016]. Capable of sustained running at speeds that exceed any predator now alive on the continent, it survives as a relict of a vanished Pleistocene fauna whose swift carnivores are long extinct. This profile examines the pronghorn's distinctive biology, the long-distance migrations that define its ecology, and the corridor and recovery programs working to keep both the abundant core populations and a handful of imperilled desert subspecies on the landscape.
Biology and Identification
The pronghorn is a medium-sized, deer-like ungulate standing roughly 80–90 cm at the shoulder, with adults typically weighing 40–60 kg; males are somewhat larger than females [O'Gara 1978]. The coat is tan to reddish-brown above and white below, marked by white bands across the throat and a conspicuous white rump patch whose erectile hairs flash a visual alarm signal to conspecifics. Both sexes carry horns, but those of males are larger and bear the forward-projecting prong that gives the species its name. Uniquely among horned mammals, the pronghorn sheds and regrows the keratinous outer sheath of its horns each year over a permanent bony core — a combination of features found in no other living animal [O'Gara 1978].
The species is built for speed. Enlarged heart, lungs, and trachea, lightweight limb bones, and cushioned cloven hooves support sprints measured at up to roughly 88 km/h and, more importantly, the ability to sustain very high speeds over long distances [O'Gara 1978; Byers 1997]. This endurance far exceeds what any extant North American predator requires, and is widely interpreted as an adaptation to the now-extinct fast carnivores of the Pleistocene, such as the American cheetah-like cat Miracinonyx. Large, protruding eyes set high on the skull give the pronghorn exceptional long-range vision across open country, its primary defense for detecting threats at distance [Byers 1997].
Pronghorn are herbivores of open shrub-steppe and grassland, feeding selectively on forbs, browse such as sagebrush, and grasses, with sagebrush forming a critical winter food across much of the range [Byers 1997]. They are gregarious, forming large mixed herds in winter and dispersing into smaller groups during the spring fawning season.
Habitat and Range
The pronghorn occupies open grasslands, sagebrush steppe, and desert shrublands of interior western North America, ranging from the Canadian prairie provinces south through the western United States to northern Mexico [IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group 2016]. The species reaches its greatest abundance on the sagebrush plains and shortgrass prairies of the U.S. Intermountain West and northern Great Plains.
Many populations are migratory, moving seasonally between high-elevation summer range and lower-elevation winter range. The most celebrated of these movements is one of the longest land migrations of any mammal in the contiguous United States, in which pronghorn travel along narrow, ancient corridors between summer range in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and wintering grounds in Wyoming's Upper Green River Basin — a route that depends on the integrity of a few constricted bottlenecks [Berger 2004; Seidler et al. 2015]. These corridors are remarkably persistent, having been used for thousands of years, and their loss to fences, roads, and development is a defining conservation challenge for the species [Berger 2004].

Conservation Status
The pronghorn is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed by the IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group in 2016, reflecting a large, widespread, and broadly stable population [IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group 2016]. The global population is estimated at roughly 0.5–1 million individuals, recovered from a historic low of perhaps 13,000–30,000 animals in the early twentieth century after market hunting and habitat conversion nearly eliminated the species [IUCN SSC Antelope Specialist Group 2016].
The favorable global status masks the imperilment of peripheral desert subspecies. The Sonoran pronghorn (A. a. sonoriensis) and peninsular pronghorn (A. a. peninsularis) are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and remain at very low numbers [USFWS 2016; Klimova et al. 2022]. Under CITES, the Mexican population of Antilocapra americana — encompassing the Mexican desert subspecies — is included on Appendix I, which prohibits commercial international trade; populations outside Mexico are not listed in the CITES appendices [CITES 2023].
Threats
Fences and barriers to movement are among the most significant pressures on migratory pronghorn. Unlike deer, pronghorn rarely jump fences and instead attempt to crawl beneath them; conventional livestock fencing with low bottom wires can block movement, fragment seasonal ranges, and cause mortality [Jones et al. 2018]. Across migration corridors, the cumulative effect of fences, roads, energy development, and exurban housing creates a gauntlet of impediments that can sever connections between summer and winter range [Seidler et al. 2015].
Habitat loss and conversion of native grassland and sagebrush steppe to cropland, energy infrastructure, and development reduce and fragment available range. Drought, intensifying in the arid southwest, periodically devastates desert subspecies by reducing forage and water; the U.S. Sonoran pronghorn population collapsed to roughly 21 individuals after the severe drought of 2002 [USFWS 2016]. Small, isolated desert populations also face reduced genetic diversity and inbreeding, documented in the captive-bred peninsular pronghorn lineage [Klimova et al. 2022].
What Is Being Done
Corridor protection. Sustained scientific and policy work has sought formal recognition for the pronghorn's long migration route between the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the Upper Green River Basin, building partnerships among federal agencies, the state of Wyoming, and conservation organizations to keep the corridor's bottlenecks open [Berger 2004; Berger et al. 2008]. Movement studies using GPS telemetry and Brownian bridge models have mapped precisely where development obstructs migration, directing mitigation to the highest-impact points [Seidler et al. 2015].
Wildlife-friendly fencing. Across the northern Great Plains and Intermountain West, agencies and landowners have replaced or modified problem fences with pronghorn-friendly designs — raising or smoothing the bottom wire so animals can pass beneath. Field evaluations confirm that such modifications measurably improve pronghorn crossing success [Jones et al. 2018].
Endangered subspecies recovery. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and Mexican partners operate a semi-captive breeding and reintroduction program for the Sonoran pronghorn, centered on a managed enclosure at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, that has rebuilt the U.S. population from its 2002 low into the hundreds [USFWS 2016]. In Mexico, a captive-breeding program for the peninsular pronghorn has increased numbers from a small founder group, with genetically informed management introduced to limit inbreeding [Klimova et al. 2022].
How Readers Can Help
Citizen science. Record pronghorn sightings through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified occurrence data contribute to range mapping and population monitoring.
Support wildlife-friendly land practices. On private and working lands within pronghorn range, retrofitting fences to wildlife-friendly standards — a smooth, raised bottom wire — removes one of the most direct barriers to movement [Jones et al. 2018].
Policy engagement. Support the designation and protection of migration corridors and the conservation programs that sustain endangered desert subspecies under the Endangered Species Act.
Informed consumer choices. Avoid products derived from protected wildlife, and when traveling in pronghorn range, choose operators and practices that respect open-country habitat and seasonal movement.
