The pygmy three-toed sloth is the smallest of the world's sloths and one of the most range-restricted mammals on Earth, found only on a single tiny island off the Caribbean coast of Panama. Its entire global population is confined to Isla Escudo de Veraguas, a fragment of land separated from the mainland for roughly nine thousand years, which makes the species exceptionally susceptible to local disturbance [Smith et al. 2022; Anderson & Handley 2001]. Biology and Identification
The pygmy three-toed sloth is notably smaller than its mainland relatives, with adults weighing roughly 2.5–3.5 kg [Anderson & Handley 2001]. Like other three-toed sloths it has three long claws on each forelimb, a short tail, and a rounded face, and its grey-brown fur often takes on a greenish tinge from symbiotic algae that grow in the hair and provide camouflage among the foliage.
The species was first formally described in 2001, distinguished from the mainland brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) by its smaller size and its isolation on Isla Escudo de Veraguas [Anderson & Handley 2001]. As a folivore it feeds on leaves and moves slowly through the canopy, a low-energy lifestyle typical of three-toed sloths.
Although early accounts associated the species closely with the island's red mangroves, field tracking has since recorded individuals in the interior forest as well as the mangrove fringe, indicating broader habitat use across the island than once assumed [Voirin 2015]. The species' very low metabolic rate and limited mobility leave it poorly equipped to respond quickly to disturbance.
Habitat and Range
The pygmy three-toed sloth is endemic to Isla Escudo de Veraguas, a small island of less than about 5 km² off the Caribbean coast of Panama, within the Bocas del Toro region [Smith et al. 2022]. The island holds the entire global range of the species; it occurs nowhere else on Earth.
The sloths use the island's red mangrove stands along the coast as well as patches of tropical forest in the interior [Voirin 2015]. Because the whole population is contained within this single, small, low-lying island, any degradation of its forest and mangrove habitat affects the species as a whole.

Conservation Status
The pygmy three-toed sloth is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, on the basis that its entire range is a single very small island where there is a likely continuing decline in habitat quality and area of occupancy [Smith et al. 2022]. The species is included on CITES Appendix II, regulating international trade [CITES 2023].
A precise global population total has not been established; censuses have been limited and earlier counts focused only on the island's mangroves, which make up a small fraction of its area [Smith et al. 2022; Voirin 2015]. The assessment classifies the population trend as decreasing. The island is protected as a wildlife refuge and lies within an Indigenous comarca, providing a legal framework for the species' single habitat [Smith et al. 2022]. In the United States, the species has been evaluated for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, reflecting international conservation concern for this single-island endemic.
Threats
Extreme range restriction is the underlying vulnerability. Because the species exists only on one small island, any single disturbance — a severe storm, fire, or disease outbreak — could affect the entire population at once [Smith et al. 2022].
Habitat degradation. Cutting of mangroves and forest on the island reduces and fragments the limited habitat available, with outsized consequences given the island's small size [Smith et al. 2022].
Human disturbance and tourism. Increasing visitation and seasonal human use of the island bring disturbance to a slow-moving animal with little capacity to avoid it, and have been identified as a conservation concern [Voirin 2015].
Hunting and handling. Opportunistic killing and the capture or handling of individuals add direct pressure to a population that is already small and confined [Smith et al. 2022].

Protected status of the island. Isla Escudo de Veraguas is designated as a wildlife refuge and falls within an Indigenous comarca, establishing legal protection for the entire range of the species [Smith et al. 2022].
Field research and monitoring. Tracking and survey work has clarified the sloths' use of both mangrove and interior forest and improved understanding of their distribution across the island, addressing long-standing gaps in basic population data [Voirin 2015].
Specialist coordination. The IUCN SSC Anteater, Sloth and Armadillo Specialist Group maintains the species account and Red List assessment and coordinates conservation priorities for the pygmy sloth and its relatives [Xenarthrans SG 2024].
Targeted conservation initiatives. Dedicated efforts focused on this single-island endemic emphasize habitat protection, responsible visitation, and continued monitoring as the core of practical conservation for the species [Voirin 2015].
