The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulata) is among the most recognizable large mammals on Earth, named for the crisp white network of lines that frames its deep liver-red coat patches. Its identity has also been redrawn: long treated as a subspecies of a single giraffe species, it is now recognized by the IUCN as a distinct species following the August 2025 taxonomic update of the genus Giraffa [IUCN 2025]. The most recent Red List assessment, however, dates to 2018 and used the older taxon string Giraffa camelopardalis ssp. reticulata [IUCN 2018]. This spotlight examines its biology, restricted Horn of Africa range, and the pressures driving its decline.
Biology and Identification
The reticulated giraffe is, like all giraffes, the tallest living land animal; large bulls can approach roughly 5.5–6 m in height, with females noticeably shorter [Muller & Harris 2022]. Its defining feature is the coat: large, sharply defined polygonal patches in a rich reddish-brown, separated by narrow, bright white lines that form the "reticulated" net pattern, extending down the legs and across the face. This patterning is distinct enough that researchers use individual patch arrangements as natural identifiers for mark-recapture monitoring [Muller & Harris 2022].
Both sexes carry ossicones — bony, skin-covered protrusions on the skull. Males develop heavier, balder ossicones with age through repeated use in "necking," the ritualized combat in which bulls swing their necks and strike opponents with their heads to establish dominance and access to mates [Muller & Harris 2022]. Gestation lasts roughly 14–15 months and typically produces a single calf. Giraffes are browsers, using a prehensile tongue and dexterous lips to feed selectively on the leaves, shoots, and flowers of acacia and other trees and shrubs.
Far from being aloof loners, giraffes maintain a complex fission–fusion social system. Long-term field studies show that herd membership is fluid but structured, shaped significantly by kinship and sex, with stable multi-year associations among adult females [Bercovitch & Berry 2013]. A comprehensive review concluded that giraffe society shares key features with the matrilineal, socially intricate systems of elephants, overturning the older view of giraffes as socially simple [Muller & Harris 2022].
Habitat and Range
The reticulated giraffe occupies dry savanna, semi-arid bushland, and acacia woodland across a comparatively small range in the Horn of Africa. The overwhelming majority of the population persists in northern and northeastern Kenya, with small, poorly documented relict groups thought to remain in southern Ethiopia and south-western Somalia, where reliable survey data are scarce [IUCN 2018; GCF 2025]. A striking feature of this species' situation is that the great majority of reticulated giraffes live outside formally protected national parks and reserves, ranging across community and private lands — which makes local landowner and community engagement central to its survival [GCF 2025].
In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, corridor routes, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.
Conservation Status
The reticulated giraffe is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The current published assessment dates to 2018 and uses the pre-reclassification taxon name Giraffa camelopardalis ssp. reticulata (assessment ID e.T88420717A88420720) [IUCN 2018]. It was listed under criterion A on the basis of an estimated decline of approximately 56% over the last three generations (about 30 years). At assessment, the population across Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia was estimated at roughly 15,785 individuals — about 11,048 of them mature — with a decreasing trend [IUCN 2018]. More recent Giraffe Conservation Foundation figures place the population in the region of 16,000–21,000 animals, reflecting newer survey coverage rather than a confirmed reversal of the decline [GCF 2025].
Taxonomy matters here. Fennessy and colleagues first proposed four giraffe species rather than one in 2016 [Fennessy et al. 2016], a conclusion later reinforced by whole-genome data [Coimbra et al. 2021]. In August 2025, the IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group formally adopted the four-species framework — northern, reticulated, Masai, and southern giraffe — so future Red List assessments will treat Giraffa reticulata as a full species [IUCN 2025].
At the trade level, all giraffes (listed as Giraffa camelopardalis) were placed on CITES Appendix II at the 18th Conference of the Parties in 2019, with the listing entering into force on 26 November 2019 [CITES 2019]. Appendix II requires that international trade in giraffe specimens be monitored and accompanied by permits certifying it is not detrimental to wild populations.
Threats
Habitat loss and fragmentation. Conversion of savanna and woodland for agriculture, settlement expansion, and infrastructure has reduced and broken up the species' range, isolating populations and limiting movement [IUCN 2018].
Illegal killing and poaching. Giraffes are killed for meat, hides, tails, and bone, and the reticulated giraffe's range overlaps regions with weak enforcement capacity. Unregulated and illegal offtake is identified as a major driver of the documented decline [IUCN 2018].
Habitat degradation and drought. Much of the range is arid and susceptible to prolonged drought, which depletes browse and water and is intensifying under a changing climate; degradation of remaining rangeland compounds the pressure [IUCN 2018].
Civil insecurity and limited monitoring. Across parts of Ethiopia and Somalia, instability and access constraints leave populations effectively unmonitored, so declines there may be underestimated [IUCN 2018].
What Is Being Done
Distinct-species recognition. The 2025 IUCN reclassification is itself a conservation tool: treating the reticulated giraffe as a separate species ensures its losses cannot be masked by stable numbers in unrelated giraffe lineages, sharpening priority-setting for future Red List work [IUCN 2025; Coimbra et al. 2021].
Community-based conservation. Because most reticulated giraffes live outside protected areas, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and partners work directly with community conservancies and private landholders on monitoring, anti-poaching support, and coexistence — the approach most likely to reach the bulk of the population [GCF 2025].
Population monitoring. Individual-identification surveys using each animal's unique coat pattern allow non-invasive tracking of numbers, survival, and distribution, supplying the data needed to detect trends and evaluate interventions [Muller & Harris 2022; GCF 2025].
Regulated international trade. The CITES Appendix II listing established a permit-and-monitoring framework intended to ensure that any legal international trade in giraffe parts does not undermine wild populations [CITES 2019].
How Readers Can Help
- Support credible field organizations. Groups such as the Giraffe Conservation Foundation conduct the monitoring and community partnerships that underpin reticulated giraffe conservation, directing effort to where most giraffes actually live.
- Be a responsible consumer and traveler. Avoid products made from giraffe parts, and choose wildlife tourism operators that work with local communities and adhere to ethical viewing practices.
- Share accurate information. Understanding that the reticulated giraffe is now recognized as a distinct, declining species — not simply one giraffe among many — helps counter the assumption that giraffes are doing fine everywhere.
