The sandhill crane is a tall, long-legged wading bird of North America and northeastern Siberia, and one of the most ancient bird lineages still on the wing — the earliest fossil attributed to the species, recovered from the Macasphalt Shell Pit in Florida, is estimated at roughly 2.5 million years old [AllAboutBirds 2024]. Famous for its rolling, trumpeting unison calls and its exuberant leaping courtship dances, it gathers in some of the largest avian congregations on the continent, most spectacularly along Nebraska's Platte River each spring [Caven et al. 2020]. As a species the sandhill crane is numerous and increasing, yet that overall security masks two small, geographically isolated subspecies whose survival depends on intensive recovery work. This profile examines the bird's biology, its continent-spanning range, its current conservation standing, and the programs sustaining both the abundant migratory populations and the rarest resident forms.


Biology and Identification

Sandhill cranes are large birds, standing roughly 80 to 122 cm tall with a wingspan of about 1.65 to 2.30 m; body mass varies considerably with subspecies and sex, from around 2.7 kg in the smallest birds to nearly 6.7 kg in the largest, with males averaging heavier than females [BirdLife International 2021]. Adults are uniformly slate-gray to brownish-gray, with a pale cheek and a distinctive bare patch of red skin on the crown and forehead; juveniles lack the red crown and show rusty-cinnamon tones. Breeding birds frequently preen with iron-rich mud, staining their gray plumage a rusty brown that serves as camouflage during nesting.

The species' resonant, far-carrying call is a product of anatomy: the trachea is greatly elongated and coiled within the keel of the sternum, lowering the pitch and adding the harmonic richness that gives the crane its rolling bugle [AllAboutBirds 2024]. Sandhill cranes are omnivorous and opportunistic, taking cultivated grains, seeds, tubers, berries, insects, snails, small vertebrates, and other invertebrates; waste corn left in harvested fields is a critical energy source during migration [ICF 2024].

Cranes are long-lived and slow to reproduce. Pairs form durable bonds reinforced through synchronized "unison calling" and the elaborate dancing — bowing, wing-spreading, leaping, and tossing vegetation — that is characteristic of the family [ICF 2024]. Clutches are typically two eggs, but brood reduction means many pairs fledge a single colt. Wild longevity can be considerable: the oldest documented sandhill crane, banded in Florida in 1982, was at least 37 years and 3 months old when recovered in Wisconsin in 2019 [AllAboutBirds 2024].


Habitat and Range

The sandhill crane breeds across a vast northern arc — from northeastern Siberia and Alaska across arctic and subarctic Canada and the northern contiguous United States — and winters in the southern United States and Mexico, with resident, non-migratory populations in Florida, coastal Mississippi, and Cuba [Strategy 2024; BirdLife International 2021]. Six subspecies are generally recognized: three migratory forms — Lesser (A. c. canadensis), Canadian (A. c. rowani), and Greater (A. c. tabida) — and three largely non-migratory forms — Florida (A. c. pratensis), Mississippi (A. c. pulla), and Cuban (A. c. nesiotes) [Strategy 2024]. The genus was revised from Grus to the resurrected Antigone following molecular work showing the older grouping to be polyphyletic [Krajewski et al. 2010].

Breeding birds favor shallow freshwater wetlands, sedge meadows, bogs, fens, and wet grasslands interspersed with adjacent uplands for foraging, while wintering and staging cranes also use agricultural fields, river sandbars, and shallow estuaries [Strategy 2024]. The Central Platte River Valley in Nebraska is the single most important spring staging area on the continent: more than 80% of the Mid-Continent Population — estimated at over 660,000 birds — passes through it between mid-February and mid-April [Caven et al. 2020]. The non-migratory Mississippi and Cuban forms are confined to fire-maintained pine savannas and seasonally flooded grasslands within very small ranges [Strategy 2024].

In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, den or nest sites, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The sandhill crane is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting an extremely large range, a very large population, and an increasing overall trend [BirdLife International 2021]. The species is listed on CITES Appendix II, a precautionary listing applied across the crane family largely to aid enforcement for live-specimen trade [CITES 2023]. The most recent crane conservation strategy estimates a total of approximately 827,000 individuals across all populations, with the abundant migratory subspecies driving the upward trend [Strategy 2024].

That favorable species-level picture does not extend to every population. Two non-migratory subspecies — the Mississippi sandhill crane (A. c. pulla) and the Cuban sandhill crane (A. c. nesiotes) — are federally Endangered in the United States and are listed under the stricter CITES Appendix I [USFWS 2024a; USFWS 2024b]. The Mississippi subspecies numbered about 133 birds as of early 2018 and has been carried for decades by captive breeding and release; by December 2023 the refuge population had grown to roughly 174 cranes [Strategy 2024; FWS Refuge 2024]. The Cuban subspecies, estimated at around 500 birds and decreasing, persists in fragmented savanna habitat [Strategy 2024]. The Florida subspecies, numbering on the order of 5,000 birds, appears stable to slightly increasing as it adapts to human-modified landscapes [Strategy 2024].


Threats

Wetland loss and degradation are the single most important threats to sandhill cranes. Drainage, conversion, altered hydrology, and changing land use in staging and wintering areas have reduced the shallow-wetland and roosting habitat on which migratory populations depend, and the upland savannas used by the resident forms have been widely diminished [Strategy 2024].

Habitat succession and fire suppression specifically imperil the Mississippi and Cuban subspecies. Their open pine-savanna and grassland habitats are maintained by frequent low-intensity fire; without it, woody vegetation encroaches and the open nesting and foraging ground these cranes require disappears [Strategy 2024].

Agricultural conversion and development fragment habitat across the range, with afforestation, sugarcane and rice expansion in Cuba, and residential and infrastructure development in Florida all reducing usable landscape [ICF 2024; Strategy 2024].

Collision and small-population risk affect cranes near power lines and fences, and the very small sizes of the Mississippi and Cuban populations leave them vulnerable to low reproductive and survival rates, disease, and stochastic events [Strategy 2024]. Concentration of the Mid-Continent Population into a shrinking band of suitable Platte River roosting habitat is a further long-term concern, as it exposes a large share of the population to localized disturbance or habitat change [Caven et al. 2020].


What Is Being Done

Captive breeding and reintroduction. The Mississippi sandhill crane is the focus of one of the longest-running crane reintroduction efforts in the world, anchored by the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1975 [FWS Refuge 2024]. Captive-bred birds reared by partner institutions are released annually to bolster the wild flock, which reached record numbers of breeding pairs and nests in the early 2020s [Strategy 2024; FWS Refuge 2024].

Habitat management with prescribed fire. Active restoration of fire-dependent pine savanna — through prescribed burning, woody-vegetation removal, and invasive-plant control — is central to maintaining habitat for the resident subspecies, and refuge management treats thousands of hectares for this purpose [Strategy 2024; FWS Refuge 2024].

Migration and staging research. Long-term tracking and population studies of the Mid-Continent Population have mapped migration corridors, stopover chronology, and decades of shifts in how cranes use the Central Platte River Valley, directly informing river and habitat management for both sandhill and the endangered whooping crane [Krapu et al. 2014; Caven et al. 2020].

International coordination and applied science. The International Crane Foundation and partners conduct research and on-the-ground work spanning the species' range — assessing hunting impacts on migratory populations, developing crop-damage deterrents, monitoring power-line collision risk, and studying habitat effects on breeding success [ICF 2024]. CITES listings provide the legal framework regulating international trade in cranes [CITES 2023].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Logging crane sightings on platforms such as iNaturalist and eBird contributes occurrence and timing data that feed range mapping, migration monitoring, and conservation assessments.

Support wetland and savanna protection. Sandhill cranes depend on shallow wetlands and fire-maintained grasslands. Supporting wetland conservation programs and the protected areas — such as national wildlife refuges — that sustain staging and breeding habitat directly benefits both abundant and rare populations.

Responsible viewing. During spring staging on the Platte River and at wintering sites, observe cranes from designated blinds and viewing areas and keep a respectful distance, so that large concentrations are not flushed from limited roosting habitat [Caven et al. 2020].

Informed advocacy. Stay informed about the recovery of the federally Endangered Mississippi and Cuban subspecies, and support the habitat-management and captive-breeding programs that keep these small populations viable [FWS Refuge 2024]. Sharing accurate, science-based information about cranes helps build durable public support for their conservation.
