The scarlet macaw is among the most recognizable birds on Earth: a meter of vivid red, yellow, and blue that ranges across the lowland forests of the American tropics, from southeastern Mexico to the southern Amazon. Its broad distribution and large total numbers have kept the species off the threatened categories of the global Red List, yet that picture conceals a more uneven reality. Across Central America, local populations have been thinned by trapping for the pet trade and by the loss of the big old trees the birds need to nest, and one regional subspecies has become the focus of intensive recovery work [BirdLife 2016; Britt et al. 2014; USFWS 2019]. This profile examines the macaw's biology, range, threats, and the conservation efforts now underway.
Biology and Identification
The scarlet macaw is a large parrot, roughly 81–96 cm long and weighing about 1 kg, with predominantly scarlet plumage offset by yellow wing coverts, blue flight feathers, and a long tapering tail [Wikipedia 2026]. A bare white facial patch and a heavy pale-and-dark bill complete the unmistakable appearance. Two subspecies are recognized: the South American A. m. macao and the larger Central American A. m. cyanoptera, distinguished in part by a broader band of blue on the wing [Wikipedia 2026].
Scarlet macaws are long-lived and form lasting pair bonds. They reach breeding age at around five years and typically lay two to three eggs in a tree cavity, with incubation lasting about five weeks and chicks fledging roughly three months after hatching [Wikipedia 2026]. The species is an obligate secondary cavity nester, depending on natural hollows in large, often emergent trees that it cannot excavate itself — making nest-site availability a central limiting factor for reproduction [Renton & Brightsmith 2009; Olah et al. 2014].
The diet is built around fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, and nectar, and the heavy bill lets the birds open hard seeds inaccessible to many other animals [Wikipedia 2026]. In the western Amazon, scarlet macaws and other parrots seek out sodium, scarce in the inland forest; research in lowland Peru found that parrots selectively consume sodium-rich palms in this sodium-deprived landscape [Brightsmith & Cáceres 2017].
Habitat and Range
The scarlet macaw occupies humid lowland forest and forest edge from southeastern Mexico through Central America and across much of the northern and western Amazon basin into Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil [BirdLife 2016; Wikipedia 2026]. Within this range it depends on tall, mature forest that supplies both fruiting trees and the large cavities it needs for nesting [Renton & Brightsmith 2009].
That dependence on big-diameter trees makes the species sensitive to selective logging and forest conversion even where canopy cover superficially remains. In Central America the northern subspecies A. m. cyanoptera has contracted into a few strongholds, with populations across parts of Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama now small and fragmented [Britt et al. 2014; USFWS 2019]. Research in the Maya Biosphere Reserve of Guatemala and the Chiquibul Forest of Belize has documented how nest predation and limited cavity availability constrain reproduction in these remnant populations [Britt et al. 2014].

Conservation Status
At the global level the scarlet macaw is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, an evaluation by BirdLife International (assessment e.T22685563A93079992) reflecting the species' very large range and a global population estimated in the tens of thousands to several hundred thousand mature individuals [BirdLife 2016]. That assessment records the global trend as decreasing, citing habitat loss and trapping as ongoing pressures even though the species' extent keeps it below the thresholds for a threatened category [BirdLife 2016].
The species is listed on CITES Appendix I, the convention's most restrictive tier, which prohibits commercial international trade in wild-caught birds [BirdLife 2016].
The favorable global status does not extend uniformly across the range. The northern subspecies A. m. cyanoptera is regionally imperiled in Central America, and in 2019 the United States Fish and Wildlife Service listed it as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, while listing the northern population of the southern subspecies as threatened [USFWS 2019]. This is the subspecies that reintroduction programs have worked to recover.
Threats
Loss of nesting trees. Because scarlet macaws cannot excavate their own cavities, the removal of large old trees through logging and land clearing directly reduces breeding opportunities. Studies of nesting ecology show that suitable cavities are limited and that predation at nest sites further depresses success [Renton & Brightsmith 2009; Britt et al. 2014].
Capture for the pet trade. The species' beauty and tameness have made it a target for poaching, with nestlings taken from cavities for sale. Collection for the pet trade is identified as a principal driver of regional declines and was a central reason the northern subspecies was listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act [USFWS 2019].
Habitat fragmentation. As forest is broken into smaller patches, populations become isolated and local extinctions harder to reverse — a pattern especially acute for the northern subspecies in Central America [Britt et al. 2014; USFWS 2019].
What Is Being Done
International trade controls. Listing on CITES Appendix I prohibits commercial international trade in wild scarlet macaws, removing a layer of legal demand and providing a framework for enforcement against trafficking [BirdLife 2016].
Reintroduction. Hand-raised scarlet macaws have been released to rebuild depleted populations. A long-running effort in Peru and Costa Rica documented first-year survival of released birds and showed that captive-reared macaws can establish in the wild, providing a tested template for later projects [Brightsmith et al. 2005]. In Mexico, a reintroduction of A. m. cyanoptera in the rainforests of Palenque released birds and tracked their establishment as part of restoring the species to former range [Estrada 2014].
Artificial nests. Because nest-cavity scarcity limits breeding, researchers have installed and refined artificial nests. Work in lowland Peru evaluated nest-site selection and the effectiveness of wooden and PVC nests in raising breeding output, showing how managers can supplement natural cavities [Olah et al. 2014].
Long-term field research. Sustained monitoring — of nesting ecology, of mineral and dietary needs, and of nest survival in Central American strongholds — supplies the evidence base that guides where and how to intervene [Renton & Brightsmith 2009; Brightsmith & Cáceres 2017; Britt et al. 2014].
How Readers Can Help
Never buy wild-caught macaws. Demand for scarlet macaws as pets drives the poaching of nestlings; declining to purchase birds of uncertain origin reduces the incentive to rob wild nests [USFWS 2019].
Support field conservation. Reintroduction programs, nest protection, and artificial nests depend on funding and local partnerships; backing the projects that run them strengthens recovery work on the ground [Brightsmith et al. 2005; Olah et al. 2014].
Protect mature forest. The most important resource for breeding macaws is the large old tree. Supporting protection of intact lowland forest, and careful management of logging, preserves the cavities the species cannot live without [Renton & Brightsmith 2009; Britt et al. 2014].
Share accurate information. Communicating the difference between the species' secure global status and the fragile state of its Central American populations helps direct resources where they are most needed [BirdLife 2016; USFWS 2019].
