The secretary bird is among the most distinctive raptors on Earth: a long-legged, ground-hunting bird of prey that strides across African grasslands and dispatches snakes and other prey with rapid, powerful stamping kicks. The sole living member of the family Sagittariidae, it occupies a unique evolutionary and ecological niche among diurnal raptors [Portugal et al. 2016]. Once widespread across the open habitats of sub-Saharan Africa, it has experienced steep, range-wide population declines that prompted the IUCN to uplist it to Endangered in 2020 [BirdLife International 2020]. This profile examines the species' biology, the pressures driving its decline, and the conservation programs working to stabilize its populations.
Biology and Identification
The secretary bird is a large, terrestrial raptor standing roughly 1.3 m tall, with a wingspan of approximately 1.9–2.1 m and a body mass of about 3.7–4.3 kg [BirdLife International 2020]. Adults have predominantly grey plumage with black flight feathers and thighs, a featherless red-orange face, and a distinctive crest of long, dark, quill-like feathers at the back of the head — a feature that contributes to the bird's common name. Its exceptionally long legs, which account for roughly half of its standing height, set it apart from all other raptors and are central to its hunting strategy.
Taxonomically, the species is placed in the order Accipitriformes but is the only living member of the family Sagittariidae, with no close living relatives among other birds of prey [BirdLife International 2020]. This phylogenetic isolation makes it a singular lineage within the diurnal raptors.
The secretary bird is best known for hunting on foot, covering substantial distances across open ground each day in search of prey. Its diet includes insects, small mammals such as rodents, reptiles including lizards and snakes, amphibians, and the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds. Rather than killing with talons in flight, it stamps prey to death with rapid strikes of its feet. A biomechanical study measured peak kick forces averaging 5.1 ± 0.9 times the bird's body weight (about 195 ± 34 N), delivered in contact times of only 15 ± 4.4 milliseconds — adaptations that allow the bird to subdue dangerous prey, including venomous snakes, while minimizing the risk of a retaliatory strike [Portugal et al. 2016]. The thick, scale-like feathering on the legs offers some protection against snakebite.
Habitat and Range
The secretary bird is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, where it inhabits open grasslands, savannas, and lightly wooded country. It ranges broadly from Senegal in the west across the Sahel to Somalia and Ethiopia in the east, and southward to the Western Cape of South Africa [BirdLife International 2020]. The species favors open habitats with short grass that permits ground hunting, and it is sensitive to the loss of such habitat through woody-plant encroachment, afforestation, and conversion to agriculture.
Despite this wide distribution, occurrence has contracted in many areas. Citizen-science atlas data from southern Africa documented that secretary birds were recorded in only about 54% of the grid cells in the second Southern African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP2) where they had been recorded in the first atlas (SABAP1), with the largest reporting-rate declines in protected areas such as Kruger National Park [Hofmeyr et al. 2014].

Conservation Status
The secretary bird is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, uplisted in 2020 from its previous classification of Vulnerable on the basis of evidence for rapid, range-wide population decline [BirdLife International 2020]. The species had earlier been moved from Least Concern to Vulnerable in 2011, so the 2020 reassessment represents the second uplisting in roughly a decade. The global population is estimated at 6,700–67,000 mature individuals and is decreasing [BirdLife International 2020].
The secretary bird is listed on CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade through a permit system [CITES 2023]. Regional data underscore the severity of the decline: a re-survey of road transects in northern Botswana, repeated after roughly two decades, found that the great majority of raptor species had declined, with secretary bird counts among those showing steep reductions [Garbett et al. 2018]. A more recent analysis of southern African citizen-science data reported substantial long-term reporting-rate declines between the SABAP1 and SABAP2 atlas periods, though it found no significant further change in relative abundance within the most recent period analyzed, suggesting possible stabilization in parts of the region [Brink et al. 2024].
Threats
Habitat loss and degradation are the foremost threats. Conversion of open grassland and savanna to cropland and human settlement, overgrazing, and the encroachment of woody vegetation into former grassland all reduce the open, short-grass habitat the species depends on for ground hunting [BirdLife International 2020].
Collisions and infrastructure. Secretary birds are vulnerable to collisions with fences and power infrastructure, and tracked birds have been documented dying from such collisions and from related hazards including drowning in steep-sided farm reservoirs [Whitecross et al. 2019].
Persecution and poisoning. The species is exposed to deliberate persecution, capture for trade, and secondary poisoning — for example through the consumption of poisoned bait or contaminated prey — across parts of its range [BirdLife International 2020].
Disturbance and direct take. Human disturbance, hunting, and capture for the live-bird trade have been identified among the contributing pressures behind the species' decline [BirdLife International 2020].
What Is Being Done
Satellite tracking and dispersal research. Researchers have fitted GPS-GSM solar-powered tracking units to juvenile secretary birds to document their movements, habitat use, and dispersal behavior. This work produced the first detailed evidence on juvenile dispersal distances and survival in southern Africa, identifying collisions and other anthropogenic hazards as significant sources of mortality and informing conservation planning [Whitecross et al. 2019].
Citizen-science monitoring. Large-scale volunteer atlas programs — including the Southern African Bird Atlas Project — provide the long-term occurrence data used to quantify range contraction and population trends, and they remain a primary tool for tracking the species over time [Hofmeyr et al. 2014; Brink et al. 2024].
National conservation focus. BirdLife South Africa runs a dedicated secretary bird conservation effort that combines satellite tracking, nest monitoring, and public reporting through citizen-science platforms, working with partners to identify priority sites and reduce key mortality factors [Whitecross et al. 2019].
International trade regulation. Inclusion on CITES Appendix II provides a framework for monitoring and controlling international trade in the species through permit requirements [CITES 2023].

Citizen science. Record and submit secretary bird sightings through established platforms such as bird atlas projects and observation apps. Verified records contribute directly to monitoring efforts and to IUCN range and trend assessments.
Support habitat conservation. Back organizations and policies that protect open grassland and savanna habitats from conversion, overgrazing, and woody encroachment — the loss of which is the primary driver of the species' decline.
Reduce infrastructure hazards. Where relevant, support measures that mark or modify fences and power lines to reduce raptor collisions, and that make farm reservoirs safer for wildlife.
Informed choices and outreach. Avoid supporting trade in wild-caught birds, and share accurate, science-based information about the ecological role of raptors. Public understanding of grassland raptors supports the long-term political and community will needed to conserve them.
