The serval is a slender, long-limbed African cat built around detecting and ambushing small prey in tall grass and wetland margins. With the longest legs and largest ears relative to body size of any living felid, it is among the most specialized small carnivores on the continent — a rodent hunter whose strike success in open grassland rivals that of far larger predators [Geertsema 1985]. Although still widespread across sub-Saharan Africa and listed in the lowest IUCN risk category, the serval is tied to a habitat being drained and degraded across much of its range, and a relict North African population now sits at the edge of disappearance [Thiel 2019; CatSG 2024]. This profile examines what makes the serval distinctive, the pressures it faces, and the work underway to keep it secure.
Biology and Identification
The serval is a medium-sized cat with a small head, long neck, and a short, black-banded tail. Adults weigh roughly 7–18 kg and measure about 59–100 cm in head-body length, with a shoulder height of around 54–62 cm [CatSG 2024]. The coat is golden-yellow to buff, patterned with black spots that coalesce into stripes over the neck and shoulders, and the underside is pale.
Two features define the species. Its legs are the longest of any cat relative to body size, an adaptation driven largely by elongated metatarsal bones that raise the animal high above the grass [CatSG 2024]. Its ears are correspondingly the largest in proportion to head size among felids, set high and close together, and function as acoustic dishes that locate prey moving unseen beneath dense vegetation [Geertsema 1985]. The serval hunts largely by sound, then delivers a high, stiff-legged pounce onto prey with both forefeet.
This specialization makes the serval an efficient rodent hunter. Long-term observation in the Ngorongoro Crater found that habituated servals succeeded in roughly half of all hunting attempts regardless of time of day — a rate that rises substantially when only small rodents are considered [Geertsema 1985]. Diet studies confirm the pattern: scat analysis on South African farmland recorded 17 prey taxa but a diet dominated by rodents, with vlei rats (Otomys species) the single largest contributor by biomass, supplemented by birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects [Ramesh & Downs 2014]. Most prey weigh under 200 g, making the serval a small-prey specialist.
Servals are predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal, shifting toward stricter nocturnality where human disturbance is high [Ramesh & Downs 2013]. In the open grassland and marsh of Ngorongoro, adults held individual home ranges of at least about 10 km² with relatively little overlap [Geertsema 1985].
Habitat and Range
The serval occurs across much of sub-Saharan Africa, from West Africa through the Sahel and East Africa into southern Africa [Thiel 2019]. It is fundamentally a grassland and wetland specialist, reaching its highest densities in well-watered savanna with long grass and in reedbeds and other riparian vegetation. It is flexible in elevation, ranging from lowland marshes up into alpine grassland as high as roughly 3,800 m on Mount Kilimanjaro [Thiel 2019].
Where prey is dense and persecution absent, servals reach remarkable local densities — camera-trap surveys at a large industrial site in South Africa recorded densities far above any previously documented for the species, underscoring how strongly the serval responds to prey availability rather than wilderness per se [Loock et al. 2018]. North of the Sahara, however, the species is reduced to a small, fragmented relict population in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia of far greater concern than the continental whole [CatSG 2024].

Conservation Status
The serval is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed as relatively abundant and widespread with a population trend reported as stable across its sub-Saharan range [Thiel 2019]. The species is included on CITES Appendix II, which regulates rather than prohibits international trade [CITES 2023].
The global category, however, masks sharp regional variation. The relict North African population — in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia — is classified regionally as Critically Endangered, with fewer than an estimated 250 mature individuals if it persists at all, and is the part of the range warranting the highest conservation priority [CatSG 2024]. Within southern Africa, the serval is regionally assessed as Near Threatened in South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini, reflecting its dependence on wetland and grassland habitats that are being lost there [EWT 2016]. The species' overall security therefore rests heavily on the continued availability of suitable grassland and wetland across the African interior.
Threats
Wetland and grassland degradation is the principal pressure on the serval. Because the cat depends on dense, productive grassland and marsh to sustain the high rodent densities it hunts, the draining of wetlands and reedbeds for agriculture and industry directly removes both habitat and prey base [Thiel 2019]. Conversion and degradation of long-grass savanna has the same effect, fragmenting the contiguous prey-rich landscapes the species needs.
Persecution adds to habitat loss. Although servals rarely take livestock larger than poultry and are effective controllers of agricultural rodents, they are killed in retaliation for poultry losses and are caught indiscriminately in snares and traps set for other animals [Thiel 2019; Ramesh & Downs 2013].
Hunting for skins persists in parts of the range. Serval pelts are traded for ceremonial and traditional uses, and in some markets are sold misleadingly as the skins of young leopards or cheetahs, sustaining demand even where the serval itself is legally protected [Thiel 2019].
The exotic-pet and hybridization issue is a distinct, growing pressure. Servals are bred with domestic cats (Felis catus) to produce "savannah cat" hybrids for the pet market, a trade that drives demand for live servals and raises documented concerns about released or escaped hybrids establishing free-roaming populations that could harm native wildlife [Dickman et al. 2019].
What Is Being Done
Range-wide status assessment. The serval is reassessed through the IUCN Red List process and tracked by the IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group, which maintains a current species account and flags the North African relict population for priority attention [Thiel 2019; CatSG 2024]. Regional Red List assessments, such as that for South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini, provide finer-grained tracking where the species is most pressured [EWT 2016].
Trade regulation. Listing on CITES Appendix II requires that international trade in servals and their parts be permitted and monitored, providing a legal framework to track and limit commercial exploitation, including the live trade that feeds hybrid breeding [CITES 2023].
Field research on coexistence. Camera-trap and dietary studies across South African farmland and industrial landscapes show that servals can persist, and even thrive, in human-modified settings where prey remains abundant and persecution is low — evidence that informs how working landscapes can be managed to retain the species [Ramesh & Downs 2013; Loock et al. 2018]. Work documenting the serval's heavy reliance on agricultural rodents also strengthens the case for the cat as a beneficial neighbor rather than a pest [Ramesh & Downs 2014].
How Readers Can Help
Citizen science. Photograph and log serval sightings through platforms such as iNaturalist. Verified occurrence records help refine range maps and feed directly into IUCN and regional assessments, which is especially valuable for poorly documented and edge populations.
Support wetland conservation. Because the serval's fortunes are tied to grassland and wetland integrity, backing organizations and policies that protect and restore marshes, reedbeds, and long-grass savanna supports the prey base the species depends on [Thiel 2019].
Avoid the hybrid and exotic-pet market. Declining to purchase serval-derived "savannah cat" hybrids or wild-sourced exotic cats reduces the demand that drives live trade and the welfare and wildlife risks associated with released hybrids [Dickman et al. 2019].
Informed consumer choices. Do not buy products made from wild cat skins, and be aware that pelts sold as young leopard or cheetah may in fact be serval; refusing such purchases removes a market incentive for hunting [Thiel 2019].
Education outreach. Share accurate information about the serval's role as a natural controller of agricultural rodents, countering the perception that drives retaliatory killing [Ramesh & Downs 2014].
