Once written off as virtually extinct in the wild, the Siamese crocodile is among the most threatened crocodilians on Earth, having vanished from an estimated 99% of its historical range across mainland Southeast Asia [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Today, fewer than roughly 1,000 mature individuals are thought to persist in fragmented wild populations, the overwhelming majority in Cambodia [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. The species is listed as CR (Critically Endangered) on the IUCN Red List, a status that reflects both catastrophic historical decline and an ongoing downward trend [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Paradoxically, while the wild population teeters near collapse, hundreds of thousands of Siamese and hybrid crocodiles are held on commercial farms, complicating both genetics and conservation [Lapbenjakul et al. 2017]. Its plight—and a hard-won recovery effort—make it a defining case study in modern reptile conservation.


Biology and Identification

The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis Schneider, 1801) is a medium-sized freshwater crocodilian in the family Crocodylidae [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Adults typically reach 2.1–3 m in total length, with exceptional individuals approaching 4 m; it is generally smaller than the sympatric saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) [Simpson & Bezuijen 2010]. The species is distinguished by a relatively broad, smooth snout, a raised bony crest behind each eye, and an enlarged pair of post-occipital scutes at the base of the neck, traits used in field identification and in screening for hybrids [Lapbenjakul et al. 2017].

Like other crocodilians, it is an ambush predator. Its diet is dominated by fish, supplemented by amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, crustaceans, and occasional carrion, with prey selection shifting as animals grow [Simpson & Bezuijen 2010]. Siamese crocodiles are generally less aggressive toward humans than larger crocodilians, and no reliably documented unprovoked fatal attacks are attributed to the wild species [Simpson & Bezuijen 2010].

Reproduction is seasonal and tied to the wet season. Females are mound-nesters, constructing nests of vegetation and soil in which 15–50 eggs are typically laid; incubation lasts roughly 70–80 days, and, as in other crocodilians, nest temperature influences offspring sex [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Females guard nests and assist hatchlings, but natural recruitment in the wild is now severely constrained by small population sizes and habitat disturbance [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Genetic studies confirm that wild Cambodian animals retain meaningful diversity, underscoring their value as a source population for recovery [Fitzsimmons et al. 2019].


Habitat and Range

The Siamese crocodile is a lowland freshwater specialist, historically occupying slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, marshes, seasonal wetlands, and flooded forest across much of mainland Southeast Asia [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Its former range spanned Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Myanmar, and parts of Indonesia (Borneo and Java), but it has been extirpated from the great majority of these areas [Bezuijen et al. 2012].

Today, the most significant wild populations occur in Cambodia, with smaller, highly fragmented groups reported in Lao PDR and Indonesia; the species is considered functionally extinct or near-extinct in the wild in Thailand and Vietnam, where remaining records often involve released or farmed stock [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. A pivotal moment came in 2000, when surveys rediscovered a surviving wild population in remote upland river systems, demonstrating that the species had persisted in low-disturbance refugia long after being presumed lost [Fitzsimmons et al. 2019].

This contraction reflects a broader pattern: lowland wetlands across the region have been converted to agriculture, impounded by dams, or heavily fished, leaving crocodiles confined to isolated headwater catchments and protected areas [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. Because these remnant populations are small and vulnerable to disturbance, NRWL treats this species as location-sensitive. In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, seasonal movement details, and den or nest coordinates are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The Siamese crocodile is listed as CR (Critically Endangered) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria reflecting an extremely small and declining wild population and a drastic reduction in range [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. The most recent published global assessment estimates fewer than approximately 1,000 mature individuals remaining in the wild, with a decreasing population trend [Bezuijen et al. 2012]. The species had been reported as virtually "extinct in the wild" in the early 1990s before the rediscovery of surviving Cambodian populations [Fitzsimmons et al. 2019].

The species is listed on CITES Appendix I, the strictest category, which prohibits commercial international trade in wild-sourced specimens; trade in farmed crocodiles is regulated separately under CITES provisions for registered captive-breeding operations [CITES 2013; CITES 2024]. In the United States, Crocodylus siamensis is also recognized as endangered under federal wildlife law [USFWS 2024].

A central conservation complication is hybridization. Commercial farms across the region hold large numbers of crocodiles, many of which are hybrids with C. porosus or C. rhombifer, prized for skin quality. Genetic screening is therefore essential to ensure that animals used for reintroduction are genuine C. siamensis, and conservation-genomic work has been used to identify pure founder stock [Lapbenjakul et al. 2017; Fitzsimmons et al. 2019].


Threats

The principal threats to the Siamese crocodile are well documented [Bezuijen et al. 2012; Fitzsimmons et al. 2019]:

  1. Habitat loss and wetland conversion — Drainage of lowland wetlands for agriculture and the construction of hydropower and irrigation dams fragment and degrade the slow-water habitats the species depends on [Bezuijen et al. 2012].

  2. Incidental capture and entanglement — Crocodiles are frequently drowned in fishing gear set for other species, a major source of mortality in remnant populations [Bezuijen et al. 2012].

  3. Collection for the crocodile-skin industry — Historical and ongoing removal of wild animals to stock commercial farms has depleted source populations [Bezuijen et al. 2012].

  4. Hybridization and genetic dilution — Escaped or deliberately released farmed hybrids threaten the genetic integrity of wild populations, undermining the value of remaining pure stock [Lapbenjakul et al. 2017; Fitzsimmons et al. 2019].

  5. Small-population effects — With so few breeding adults remaining, populations are vulnerable to inbreeding, demographic chance events, and disrupted reproduction, slowing natural recovery even where habitat persists [Bezuijen et al. 2012].

These pressures interact: habitat fragmentation isolates already-tiny groups, while fishing pressure and farm-related genetic contamination compound the difficulty of natural recovery [Bezuijen et al. 2012].


What Is Being Done

The flagship recovery effort is the Cambodian Crocodile Conservation Programme, a long-running partnership led by the conservation organisation Fauna & Flora together with Cambodian government agencies and local communities, established following the 2000 rediscovery of wild crocodiles [Fauna & Flora 2024]. The programme combines wild-population monitoring, community-managed protected areas, head-starting of hatchlings, and the release of genetically screened, captive-bred juveniles into secured habitat [Fauna & Flora 2024].

Genetic screening of farm and rescue-centre animals has been used to identify purebred C. siamensis founders for breeding, ensuring that released animals do not introduce hybrid genes into wild populations [Lapbenjakul et al. 2017; Fitzsimmons et al. 2019]. Reintroductions of captive-bred crocodiles into protected catchments have continued since 2012, and recent seasons have recorded successful natural nesting and hatching by released and wild animals—evidence that recovery is biologically achievable [Fauna & Flora 2024].

At the international level, the CITES Appendix I listing constrains commercial trade in wild specimens and obliges range and importing states to regulate trade through permitting [CITES 2013; CITES 2024]. The IUCN SSC Crocodile Specialist Group coordinates regional assessment, monitoring standards, and conservation guidance for the species across its range [Simpson & Bezuijen 2010]. National wildlife agencies, including in Thailand and Cambodia, additionally provide legal protection and support reintroduction trials [USFWS 2024].
