The snowy owl is the iconic white raptor of the Arctic, a large, powerful predator whose fortunes rise and fall with the rodent populations of the circumpolar tundra. Its nomadic breeding habits and irregular winter movements long obscured its true numbers, and a careful reassessment of long-term monitoring data has revealed declines steep enough to place the species among the world's threatened birds [BirdLife 2021; Wiebe et al. 2024]. This profile examines the snowy owl's biology, its vast and remote range, the pressures it faces, and the research-led efforts working to understand and protect it.


Biology and Identification

The snowy owl is a large, heavy owl and the only owl with predominantly white plumage [Wikipedia 2026]. Females are larger than males and more heavily marked: males average roughly 58.7 cm in length and 1,465–1,808 g in weight, while females average about 63.7 cm and 1,707–2,426 g, with wingspans reaching into the 150–180 cm range [Wikipedia 2026]. The sexes are visibly different — males become nearly pure white with age, attaining full white plumage at around nine to ten years, while females retain extensive dark brown flecks and barring throughout life [Wikipedia 2026].

Snowy owls are dietary specialists when conditions allow and opportunists when they must be. On the breeding grounds, reproductive success is strongly tied to the abundance of lemmings; where lemmings are scarce, owls take other small mammals and birds, and in winter they hunt waterbirds such as ducks, geese, grebes, and gulls [Wikipedia 2026; PSS 2024]. Unlike many owls, they hunt readily in daylight as well as at night, often watching from an elevated perch before launching a fast, low pursuit.

Breeding is famously irregular. Snowy owls rarely nest in the same place or with the same mate in successive years, and may skip breeding entirely when prey is scarce; in good lemming years, clutches are large, often ranging from about five to eleven eggs [Wikipedia 2026]. This boom-and-bust reproduction is an adaptation to the extreme variability of the Arctic environment.


Habitat and Range

The snowy owl breeds across the circumpolar Arctic tundra, generally north of about 60° north, spanning Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia, and Siberia [Wikipedia 2026]. Of an enormous potential breeding range exceeding 12 million km², only a fraction reliably supports nesting in any given year, because the owls track shifting concentrations of prey across the tundra [Wikipedia 2026].

In winter, snowy owls move south in irregular, sometimes spectacular irruptions that can carry birds far beyond their normal range, occasionally reaching the southern United States. These movements are unpredictable from year to year and are linked to breeding productivity and prey conditions in the preceding season [Wikipedia 2026; PSS 2024].

Conservation Status

The snowy owl is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, assessed by BirdLife International in 2021 (e.T22689055A166224787) [BirdLife 2021]. The species was uplisted from Least Concern after revised data indicated that the global population was considerably smaller than once believed, and that it had declined by more than 30% over three generations [BirdLife 2021; Wiebe et al. 2024]. The species is listed on CITES Appendix II, regulating its international trade [Wikipedia 2026].

The current global population is plausibly estimated at roughly 14,000–28,000 breeding adults — far below historical assumptions [Wiebe et al. 2024]. A circumpolar status assessment drawing on long-term monitoring at multiple sites concluded that breeding populations have decreased by more than 30% over three generations, supporting the Vulnerable listing under IUCN Criterion A2 [Wiebe et al. 2024]. In North America, survey data have indicated a population decline on the order of 64% since 1970 [Audubon 2017]. In Canada, a national assessment also identified the snowy owl as a species of conservation concern [COSEWIC 2025].


Threats

Climate change is regarded as the most significant long-term threat. Warming is altering the Arctic tundra and disrupting the lemming population cycles on which snowy owl breeding success depends; less predictable prey peaks translate into fewer successful breeding seasons [Wikipedia 2026; Wiebe et al. 2024].

Anthropogenic mortality affects birds especially during southward winter movements, when they encounter hazards largely absent from the Arctic. Documented causes include collisions with vehicles and aircraft, electrocution on power infrastructure, and lead poisoning from ingesting contaminated prey or carrion [Wikipedia 2026; Audubon 2017].

Monitoring difficulty is itself a conservation challenge. Because the owls are nomadic, irruptive, and breed in remote terrain, detecting and quantifying population change is inherently hard, which can delay recognition of declines and complicate management [Wiebe et al. 2024].


What Is Being Done

Long-term population assessment. An international research effort synthesized data from multiple long-term monitoring sites to produce the revised global population estimate and trend analysis that underpins the species' current IUCN status, replacing earlier, much higher guesses with evidence-based figures [Wiebe et al. 2024].

Movement tracking. Project SNOWstorm, a collaborative research program launched during a major irruption in 2013, uses high-resolution transmitters to track individual snowy owls, building a decade-long record of winter movements, habitat use, and survival that informs conservation priorities [PSS 2024].

National assessment and listing. Government science bodies have conducted formal status reviews — including a Canadian national assessment — that provide the official basis for recognizing the snowy owl as a species at risk and for directing conservation attention [COSEWIC 2025].

International cooperation. The species has been considered for listing under international agreements on migratory species, reflecting recognition that its conservation requires coordination across the many countries it occupies through the year [PSS 2024].


How Readers Can Help

Citizen science. Report snowy owl sightings, especially during winter irruptions, through platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist. Verified observations contribute directly to range mapping and to understanding the irregular movements that make the species difficult to monitor [PSS 2024].

Observe responsibly. When snowy owls appear in southern areas during winter, keep a respectful distance and avoid flushing or baiting birds for photographs. Repeated disturbance forces owls to expend energy they need to survive harsh winter conditions [PSS 2024].

Reduce avoidable hazards. Support measures that mitigate the wintering-ground threats documented for the species, such as wildlife-safe power infrastructure and reduced use of lead ammunition that can contaminate the prey owls scavenge [Wikipedia 2026].

Education outreach. Share accurate, science-based information about Arctic ecosystems and the link between tundra prey cycles and snowy owl survival with schools, community groups, and social networks.
