The vicuña is the smallest of the four South American camelids and the wild ancestor of the domestic alpaca. Endemic to the high Andean puna and altiplano, it produces what is widely regarded as the finest natural animal fiber in the world. The species is also one of the most cited successes in wildlife conservation: reduced to roughly 10,000 animals by the late 1960s, it has recovered to an estimated 500,000 individuals and is today assessed as Least Concern, a turnaround driven by an international treaty and by community-based, live-shearing management rooted in pre-Hispanic Andean practice [Acebes et al. 2018; McAllister et al. 2009]. This profile examines the vicuña's biology, the legal and community frameworks behind its recovery, and the threats that still require vigilance.


Biology and Identification

The vicuña is a slender, long-necked camelid standing roughly 75–85 cm at the shoulder and weighing approximately 35–65 kg, with adults captured for shearing in Peru averaging about 38 kg in body mass [Gutiérrez et al. 2010]. The coat is cinnamon to light brown over the back and flanks, fading to white on the underparts and inner legs; the northern subspecies additionally bears a distinctive bib of long white chest hairs. Unlike the larger guanaco, the vicuña has continuously growing lower incisors—a trait otherwise unusual among artiodactyls—an adaptation for grazing the short, abrasive bunchgrasses of the high puna.

Two subspecies are recognized: the northern Vicugna vicugna mensalis, distributed through Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile, and far northwestern Argentina; and the southern Vicugna vicugna vicugna of the more arid Argentine and southern Bolivian puna [Acebes et al. 2018]. The vicuña is the wild progenitor of the domestic alpaca, a relationship confirmed by molecular phylogenetics [Kadwell et al. 2001].

The species' commercial and cultural prominence rests on its fleece. Vicuña fiber is exceptionally fine, with a mean fiber diameter of roughly 12–13 micrometers—finer than cashmere—and a low coefficient of variation that gives it unusual homogeneity among luxury animal fibers [Gutiérrez et al. 2010]. The fleece is also sparse and slow-growing, which limits sustainable yield and underpins the fiber's high market value.

Vicuñas are diurnal grazers that live in two principal social units: territorial family groups of one adult male with several females and their young, and larger roving bands of bachelor males. They are physiologically adapted to elevations between roughly 3,200 and 4,800 m, where oxygen is scarce and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing.


Habitat and Range

The vicuña inhabits the high Andean grasslands of the puna and altiplano across five countries: Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador, where it occurs as a reintroduced population [Acebes et al. 2018]. It is closely tied to open, high-elevation bunchgrass plains with access to permanent water, typically grazing day pastures on dry slopes and retreating to lower, moister meadows. Peru holds the largest national population, followed by Bolivia and Argentina.

The species occurs in numerous protected areas across its range, including Pampa Galeras–Bárbara D'Achille National Reserve in Peru and Salinas y Aguada Blanca, among others, which together with communal management lands form the core of its conservation estate [Acebes et al. 2018].

In accordance with NRWL sensitive-species policy, specific site locations, corridor routes, and seasonal movement details are not disclosed in this article.


Conservation Status

The vicuña is currently assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment published in 2018, on the basis of its wide distribution, large population size, increasing population trend, and occurrence in numerous protected areas [Acebes et al. 2018]. The global population is estimated at approximately 500,000 individuals and increasing [Acebes et al. 2018]. This status represents a recovery from severe historical depletion: hunting for the species' fiber had reduced the global population to roughly 10,000 animals by the late 1960s, when the vicuña was considered to be in danger of extinction [McAllister et al. 2009].

The vicuña's CITES listing is split by population, reflecting differing recovery levels. All populations were originally placed on CITES Appendix I in 1975. Since 1987, recovered populations have been progressively transferred to Appendix II under annotations that permit international trade only in fiber and cloth derived from live-shorn wild animals, marked with an agreed authentication. As a result, the populations of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina are largely on Appendix II (some Argentine and Chilean populations remain on Appendix I), while Ecuador's population remains on Appendix I [CITES 2023; McAllister et al. 2009]. In the United States, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has correspondingly reclassified certain vicuña populations from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act, with a special rule governing fiber trade [USFWS 2002].


Threats

Poaching remains the most direct threat. The high value of vicuña fiber on international luxury markets creates persistent incentives for illegal hunting, which can be more lucrative and less labor-intensive than legal live-shearing, and reported poaching pressure increased in several range areas during the 2000s and 2010s [Acebes et al. 2018; Lichtenstein 2010]. Animals are typically killed for their fleece, with products smuggled out of range countries.

Sarcoptic mange, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, has produced severe localized outbreaks in wild vicuña populations across Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru, in some cases driving local extirpations and depressing fiber quality and value for managing communities. Its interaction with poaching, habitat change, and competition with livestock is of growing conservation concern [Beldoménico & Uhart 2022].

Competition with domestic livestock for the limited forage and water of the puna, together with fencing and changes in land use, constrains vicuña populations in parts of the range [Acebes et al. 2018].

Climate change is projected to reduce rainfall across portions of the central and southern Andes where vicuñas concentrate, and warming is expected to compress suitable high-elevation habitat upslope, increasing stress on water-dependent puna grazers [Acebes et al. 2018].


What Is Being Done

International legal framework. The cornerstone of the recovery is the Convention for the Conservation and Management of the Vicuña. An initial agreement between Bolivia and Peru was signed in La Paz in 1969, and a strengthened treaty was signed in Lima on 20 December 1979 by Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, with Argentina acceding subsequently [Vicuña Convention 1979]. The convention banned commercial hunting and trade, mandated protected areas and breeding centers, and—critically—established that recovered populations could be used sustainably under strict, coordinated regulation. CITES Appendix I listing in 1975 closed the international market that had driven the decline, and subsequent population-specific transfers to Appendix II reopened a regulated, traceable trade in fiber [CITES 2023].

Community-based live shearing (chaccu). The defining management model is the live capture and shearing of wild vicuñas, a revival of the Inca-era chaccu: communities form human chains to drive vicuñas into corrals, where each animal is shorn and released unharmed [McAllister et al. 2009]. By tying the value of the fiber to living animals held in communal commons, the model gives Andean communities a direct economic stake in protecting wild herds against poaching, and Peru, Argentina, and Chile now combine wild and captive management while Bolivia manages vicuñas exclusively in the wild under common-property regimes [Lichtenstein 2010].

Authentication and traceable trade. Legal vicuña fiber and finished goods carry agreed marks of origin and authentication, allowing certified products to enter international markets while distinguishing them from poached fiber—a system that converts a former poaching driver into a conservation incentive when revenues reach producer communities [CITES 2023; McAllister et al. 2009].

Protected areas and monitoring. Range states maintain census programs and protected reserves; the IUCN SSC South American Camelid Specialist Group coordinates expert assessment and range-wide monitoring that informs the Red List and CITES decisions [Acebes et al. 2018].


How Readers Can Help

Buy only certified vicuña. Genuine vicuña products are legal only when sourced from live-shorn wild animals and authenticated under the CITES system. Purchasing certified fiber that returns value to Andean producer communities supports the live-shearing model; unmarked or suspiciously cheap "vicuña" goods may originate from poaching [CITES 2023; Lichtenstein 2010].

Support equitable benefit-sharing. Research shows that much of the value of vicuña fiber is captured by traders and textile firms rather than the low-income communities that steward wild herds [Lichtenstein 2010]. Supporting fair-trade and community-enterprise initiatives strengthens the local incentives on which the species' protection depends.

Citizen science. Log wildlife observations through platforms such as iNaturalist when traveling in Andean range countries. Verified occurrence records contribute to range-mapping and assessment efforts.

Education and informed travel. Choose tour operators that respect wildlife and protected-area rules, and share accurate, science-based information about the vicuña as a model of sustainable use—one of conservation's clearest cases of recovery achieved through regulated, community-led management [McAllister et al. 2009].
