The West European hedgehog is among the most recognisable wild mammals of the European countryside and garden, a small spiny insectivore whose nocturnal foraging makes it both a familiar cultural icon and a significant consumer of invertebrate prey. Once considered abundant across its range, the species has undergone widespread and sustained population decline over recent decades, driven largely by the intensification of agriculture, the spread of roads and urban development, and the loss of connected habitat [Gazzard et al. 2025; Mammal Society 2024]. In 2024 the species was reassessed at the global level for the first time in a generation, reflecting growing evidence of long-term losses [Gazzard & Rasmussen 2024]. This profile examines its biology, the converging pressures behind its decline, and the conservation work underway to reverse it.
Biology and Identification
The West European hedgehog is a small, rotund insectivore covered dorsally by several thousand keratinous spines — modified hairs — that overlie a powerful orbicularis muscle allowing the animal to roll into a near-complete defensive ball [Gazzard et al. 2025]. Adult head-and-body length typically ranges from about 20 to 30 cm, and body mass varies seasonally and geographically, commonly between roughly 500 and 1,200 g, with individuals gaining substantial fat reserves before winter [Gazzard et al. 2025]. The underside, face, and legs are covered in coarse brown fur rather than spines.
The species is chiefly nocturnal and crepuscular, foraging across gardens, hedgerows, grasslands, and woodland edges. Its diet is dominated by ground-active invertebrates — earthworms, beetles, caterpillars, slugs, snails, and other larvae — supplemented opportunistically with carrion, eggs, and small vertebrates [Gazzard et al. 2025]. In the cooler parts of its range hedgehogs hibernate through winter, entering prolonged bouts of torpor in insulated nests and periodically rousing; survival of hibernation depends heavily on pre-winter body condition. Litters typically comprise four to six young, and although individuals can live well beyond five years, mortality in the first year is high.
Habitat and Range
The West European hedgehog is native to western and central Europe, ranging from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy northward through France, the British Isles, the Low Countries, Germany, and into Scandinavia, with introduced populations in places such as New Zealand [Gazzard & Rasmussen 2024]. It is a habitat generalist associated with mosaic landscapes that combine foraging grounds with cover for nesting, and it has become strongly associated with human-modified environments including farmland margins, suburban gardens, parks, and amenity green space [Gazzard et al. 2025].
Across much of its range the species' distribution is closely tied to the availability of connected habitat features such as hedgerows and the permeability of garden boundaries. In Great Britain, national surveys have documented markedly reduced occupancy of rural landscapes, with hedgehogs absent from large areas of farmland [Williams et al. 2018]. Urban and suburban populations, by contrast, have shown signs of stabilisation in some regions even as rural populations remain depressed [PTES & BHPS 2022].

Conservation Status
The West European hedgehog is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, reassessed in 2024 from its previous Least Concern listing in light of evidence that population declines approach or exceed 30% over a recent ten-year period across much of its range [Gazzard & Rasmussen 2024]. The species is not listed on any CITES appendix; it is, however, protected under Appendix III of the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats [Council of Europe 1979].
The 2024 assessment found reduced numbers in more than half of the countries with available data, with nationally estimated declines on the order of 16–33% over a decade and some local studies reporting steeper losses [Gazzard & Rasmussen 2024]. Regional assessments echo the global trend: on the IUCN-compliant Red List for Britain's terrestrial mammals, the West European hedgehog is classified as Vulnerable within Great Britain [Mathews & Harrower 2020]. A 2025 review of Europe's hedgehog species emphasised that human-driven landscape change is the common thread linking declines across the continent, while also noting persistent gaps in monitoring data [Gazzard et al. 2025].
Threats
Agricultural intensification is a leading driver of decline. The simplification of farmed landscapes — removal of hedgerows, enlargement of fields, and reduction of permanent grassland and field margins — diminishes both foraging habitat and the connectivity hedgehogs require to move safely between resources [Williams et al. 2018; Gazzard et al. 2025].
Habitat fragmentation and roads compound these losses. Roads bisect habitat and impose direct mortality: an analysis of British survey data estimated that between roughly 167,000 and 335,000 hedgehogs are killed on the country's roads each year [Wembridge et al. 2016]. In urban areas, impermeable garden boundaries such as solid fencing and walls can isolate populations into fragments too small to persist.
Intra-guild interactions with badgers. Across rural Britain, hedgehog occupancy is strongly negatively associated with the local density of European badger (Meles meles) setts; badgers are both competitors for invertebrate prey and occasional predators, and national survey data indicate hedgehogs are largely absent from landscapes where badgers are abundant and high-quality habitat is otherwise lacking [Williams et al. 2018].
Pesticides and rodenticides. The chemical treatment of land reduces the abundance and diversity of the invertebrate prey on which hedgehogs depend. Hedgehogs are also exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides: a survey of hedgehogs from across Britain detected rodenticide residues in a substantial proportion of individuals, indicating widespread secondary exposure in a non-target insectivore [Dowding et al. 2010].
What Is Being Done
Global and regional assessment. The 2024 IUCN reassessment, produced with support for the European Red List process, provides the authoritative baseline against which future trends will be measured and has helped focus conservation attention on a species long assumed to be secure [Gazzard & Rasmussen 2024]. The accompanying scientific review synthesised statuses, issues, and research needs for Europe's hedgehog species to guide coordinated action [Gazzard et al. 2025].
National monitoring. In Britain, long-running citizen-science programmes — including the People's Trust for Endangered Species and British Hedgehog Preservation Society Mammals on Roads and Living with Mammals surveys, drawn together in the periodic State of Britain's Hedgehogs reports — track population trends and distinguish diverging rural and urban trajectories [PTES & BHPS 2022]. Standardised footprint-tunnel surveys have enabled the first national assessments of rural occupancy [Williams et al. 2018].
Habitat connectivity. The Hedgehog Street campaign, run jointly by PTES and BHPS, mobilises householders to create "Hedgehog Highways" — small gaps in garden boundaries that reconnect fragmented suburban habitat — and to manage gardens in ways that restore foraging and nesting resources [Hedgehog Street 2024]. Such measures directly address the loss of connectivity identified as a key driver of urban decline.
Legal protection. Listing under Appendix III of the Bern Convention obliges signatory states to regulate exploitation and keep populations out of danger, providing a framework for national protection measures across the species' European range [Council of Europe 1979].
How Readers Can Help
Citizen science. Record hedgehog sightings — including road casualties — through national schemes and platforms such as iNaturalist and the BIG Hedgehog Map. Verified records feed directly into distribution mapping and the surveys that underpin conservation assessments [PTES & BHPS 2022].
Reconnect habitat. Where gardens are present, creating a 13 cm × 13 cm gap at the base of fences or walls — a "Hedgehog Highway" — links isolated patches into networks large enough to support a population [Hedgehog Street 2024]. Leaving wild corners, log piles, and leaf litter provides foraging and nesting habitat.
Reduce chemical use. Avoiding slug pellets, broad-spectrum pesticides, and rodenticides protects the invertebrate prey base and reduces the secondary-poisoning risk documented in hedgehogs [Dowding et al. 2010].
Support evidence-based organisations and policy. Back the research and monitoring organisations working on hedgehog conservation, and support policy that retains hedgerows, field margins, and connected green space in both farmed and urban landscapes [Gazzard et al. 2025].
